Dear Nigerian Government,
I recently read that our former Vice President Dick Cheney has been charged with bribery in your country and could face jailtime for this offense.
As an American citizen, and I know I speak for MANY, I remind you that no one is above the law. These are serious charges and if he is found guilty he should serve the same sentence that anyone would.
I recently read that his former company Halliburton is attempting to pay a large sum of $500 million to settle this out of court and keep Mr. Cheney out of jail. (See
http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/nigeria/101204/nigeria-corruption-dick-cheney-halliburton).
My question to you is, wouldn't this payment be just another form of bribery? If Mr Cheney and his company can simply write a check to nullify illegal bribery activity, doesn't this show other potential offenders that if they want to engage in illegal activity such as bribery, they don't have to worry because if they get caught all they have to do is pay more money?
I think this would set a dangerous precedent.
To uphold the rule of law and demonstrate the seriousness of these charges, Mr Cheney should face a trial and the consequences thereof.
By the way, I'm wondering, are there electrical outlets in Nigerian prisions? Mr Cheney has to recharge his heart pump's batteries every seven hours. It would be a shame if there's no where to plug in the charger.
Regards,
An American Citizen
