Abortion foes work to put issue on '08 ballot

By Justin Coons, Rocky Mountain News

June 20, 2007

An anti-abortion group has filed paperwork with the state of Colorado proposing a state constitutional amendment that would define a person as "any human being from the moment of fertilization."
Proponent Mark Meuser, of Colorado for Equal Rights, based in Peyton, said the amendment could be used as a stepping stone to challenge abortion in Colorado.

"This language defines what a person is," he said. "If it challenges (the Roe v. Wade decision that guarantees a woman's right to an abortion), that will be weighed, and it'll be up to the courts to decide at that level."

The ballot initiative is still in its infancy and faces hurdles before it can be placed on the 2008 ballot.

1. "from the moment of fertilization"
Lovely. Just lovely.

Emotional, unscientific babble about equal to "Evolution is a lie". I love that the folks who say the believe in God, PLAY God--legally--but trying to legislate when life begins. It reminds me of certain tracts from the middle ages I've been reading lately.

2. If these assholes were really serious about stoping abortion, they'd mandate vasectomies for
all unmarried males.

3. Yet, we constantly see a barrage of viagra ads...
...who exactly are all the "male enhancement" users sleeping with? Sure, some could be gay. But some are straight and are going to sleep with women.

Why does their right to get erect, outweigh our rights to birth control, morning after pills and abortions?
:grr::mad:

4. I've seriously been contemplating going back to school to become
a pharmacist JUST so I can refuse to fill prescriptions for boner pills. They have no clue what it's like to have perfect strangers poking around their personal lives determining for THEM what the course of their lives should be.

5. Turnabout is fair play, right?
Just give the gay men their "male enhancement" pills. ;) They aren't the ones blocking our rights and judging us for being sexual. Just the hetero, uber-religious males (of a few ethnicities, apparently--it's not just the white guys anymore.) :eyes:

6. Exactly! And quite frankly, I find the idea of elderly men like say, Bob Dole,
doing anything with anyone absolutely repulsive. If God wanted old men to be sexually active in their golden years, he'd give them a warranty.

7. And all of us who've suffered through the devestation of a wanted
pregnancy's miscarriage are therefore, at best guilty of manslaughter, at worst guilty of murder.

Nice. Just think, with all the evil women miscarrying, how many of the unemployed whose jobs were outsourced can now find new jobs as vagina police!

8. this is disturbing beyond the issue of choice
i am adamantly pro-choice and would fight this measure on that basis alone.

however, should a measure like this pass, it would also outlaw a number of different contraceptive choices for women, myself included. progestin-based birth control, as well as IUDs, would be outlawed because they can prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine lining. and what do they think is going to happen if women have fewer options for birth control?

this is a slippery slope that could, as i see it, have far-reaching implications that are beyond the scope of this group.

9. I think that's the ultimate goal of some anti choice nuts
Abortion is just the beginning, some want ALL contraceptives prohibited because they see anything interfering with conception as homicide and we should all be subject to their beliefs for some reason.

Out of curiosity how many politicians who support this kind of legislation have 10 or so kids?
