Dems' abortion line may soften
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 09:11 AM by ismnotwasm
"The Democratic Party has proposed changes to the party's platform on abortion rights with a new focus on reducing the number of abortions, in an overture to evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics.

The party's platform now reads: "We stand proudly for a woman's right to choose, consistent with Roe v. Wade, and regardless of her ability to pay. ... At the same time, we strongly support family planning and adoption incentives. Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare."

The proposed changes, drafted by a group of progressive evangelical and Catholic leaders, add that while still firmly backing Roe vs. Wade, "the Democratic Party strongly supports access to affordable family planning services and comprehensive age-appropriate sex education ... which help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions."

It should read "We firmly and unequivocally support a woman's right to choose. We consider the right to a safe and legal abortion to be not only a personal medical decision, but a basic human right. We support full funding for family planning, comprehensive sex education, as well as pre and post-natal care"

1. Placating...
is not what we need to be doing at this stage of the game.

I worry that the platform is indeed being softened at a time when it should be fortified. We don't need to muddy the waters trying to entice a few undecideds.

2. There are some Roman Catholics...
...that support pro-choice. I linked their site in another thread in this forum (if memory serves they're called Catholics for Choice). But honestly, I don't believe there's a way to appeal to evangelical Christians, and I really don't think the pro-choice movement needs them.

In my opinion mental illness is an inherent part of the evangelical movement. That's not something any sort of logic or reason can negotiate with, or bring around with some phrase changes. Besides, why try to appeal to insanity?
