Scientists discover pyramid center of culture in Vicús town of Piura

A pyramid centre belonging to the culture Vicús was discovered in the village of Laynes, province Morropón (Piura) for workers in the program Building Peru when performing cleaning work in the area.

The news mobilized archaeologists from the National Institute of Culture (INC) of Piura, and after a visit to the area confirmed the existence of a cemetery or religious center of the high hierarchy of culture Vicús.


The archaeological complex pyramid occupies an area of approximately three thousand 500 square meters. The discovery includes six incomplete pyramid, built as an adobe tissue overlay.

Archaeologists who visited the place called to the two largest structures Pyramid Major 1 and 2, while the remaining four called the Pyramids Minors.

At the Pyramid Greater 1 was found traces of the high concentration of Late Horizon and bone fragments of the skull of a human being. It is not ruled out that at a depth of 25 metres is buried an important character.

Along with the Mayor Pyramid 2 is a comprehensive platform where it is likely to be performed ceremonies and tributes to the curacas. The form of large ship suggests that here would be buried prominent personalities of the nobility.


"This complex religious senior pre-Inca is surrounded by a cemetery desecrated and looted by huaqueros however, the archaeological complex is intact," said Cesar Santos Sanchez, head of the Archaeological Area INC-Piura.

The area is surrounded by four hills represent Pilán, Vicús, Chanchape and Tongo, forming a ring around the Pyramid Greater 1 it is speculated that it was a strategic and high-value administrative and religious.

Before the discovery began to thrive looters or huaqueros already deteriorated areas of study in search of valuable pieces.

The commune delegate Laynes, along with the District Municipality of La Matanza, coordinated with the INC-Piura placing milestones geophysicists to delineate the area to protect.

The discovery took place on January 22 to the surprise of workers in Building Peru.
