6. People are not smart enough to use the DP only on people who deserve it
The probability, no matter how small, of an innocent person being executed is sufficient reason for me to oppose it completely.

23. And if that is truly the case, then fine. But those who try to kill our democracy by
killing our elected leaders and judges and who are NOT clinically insane need to be put to death. Make an example of them.

And I am not generally in favor of the DP otherwise except when it comes to child killers.

For many, people like McVeigh and Tiller's murderer are admired as martyrs.

Serious answer: No, because of the possibility of executing an innocent person.

11. Nope
What good would come of it? Make the cretin live the rest of his life in jail with no chance of parole.

I just don't get the support for the death penalty. We're going to show individuals and society that killing people is very, very bad by killing someone. Where is the logic in that?

21. WRONG! It cost more to kill him
here's a few links about the facts:

http://www.economist.com/node/13279051

http://www.deathpenalty.org/article.php?id=42

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29552692/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

Besides suffering for decades in an American prison is hell and he deserves it. The death penalty is too quick.

24. You are mis-interpreting articles in your own link
Edited on Mon Jan-10-11 01:43 AM by golfguru
The articles do NOT say that the act of execution of the convict costs more.
It says our current judicial process to impose death penalty is more
costly than obtaining a life sentence.

SO what needs to happen is to shorten the process between conviction and
carry out the execution.

And 90% of murderers do not need to be executed. Only those who murder
children, or premeditated multiple murders should be executed if there is
ZERO chance of innocence.

Examples of murderers deserving capital punishment:

All murderers of under age children
Richard Speck
John Wayne Gacy
All Serial killers
Mass murders of innocent civilians
Rape and murder especially if torture was also involved

nation that I can imagine. It needs to stop. It is time to draw a line in the sand and put these people on notice that it will not be tolerated, and will be punished severely. But it needs to be called what it is - none of this mincing around calling it simple murder.

I consider it far worse than murder for mere financial gain, or crimes of passion, which are not direct threats to our democracy.

This guy is a menace, a threat to society! And our tax dollars need not be spent on his housing, food and healthcare for the next half century.

And I don't care that he's disturbed; everyone has an excuse!

29. If he truly is schizophrenic or mentally ill then no. I think he will get it though.
Even in liberal CT we just sent a man to death row for killing a woman and her two daughters and for torturing the father- it happened in my hometown of Cheshire. I wouldn't be surprised.

For all those recommending "fyring" Loughner, how are you any better than the criminal?
