Want to see something incredible?
MIRAGE - Buildings and mountains appear in China

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwLhXmnbtTM&NR=1

I understand how mirages work. I've seen the shimmer desert kind but otherwise I only have one thing to say:

1. I'm skeptical
either this is some type of double reflection, off the water and again off of the mist, or it is bullshit.

6. I'd like to know what the Chinese woman is actually saying. The whole news video could be a fake.

4. Not only is such an atmospheric lensing uncommon but very rare to be so...

...un-distorted. I've never seen any kind of Fata Morgana as complete as that. I assume it's not a hoax but the effect is so "perfect" as to make me suspicious.

Oh and thank you very much for sharing this, either way!

5. Definitely an impressive sight, but completely explainable.
They're sort of like reflections.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirage
A mirage is a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays are bent to produce a displaced image of distant objects or the sky.

8. Yah... I know what a mirage is. But my awe is more along the lines of : It's so Perfect!
As explained upthread... they usually aren't so pristine.

11. I wasn't really directing my post to you.
I was talking more to the numerous skeptics in this thread. I assumed you knew what it was. :hi:

7. Simple explanation:
It's a hoax, the video depicts actual things with a mist or fog on the surface of the river.

Looking at the posting member's other video's, he seems to be an Alex Jones fan, goes on about hexagons on Mars and such.

14. To clarify:
In common usage, in my experience, a "mirage" often refers to seeing things that aren't there: water where there is none, a mermaid where it's just an optical morphing of a rock, and such.

In this instance I am claiming that the buildings we see are real buildings.

Maybe the illusion part is that they're appearing much higher than they really are, like above the clouds.

If that's the case, if the city is actually there, then this could be a mirage.

My impression, however, is that the video is being sold (by the youtube poster) as a non-existent city that magically appeared where there is none.

If there's a different term for that sort of illusion, I would love to learn what it is.

15. However it's being sold, the simplest explanation is that it's a mirage.
The YouTube poster may not realize that, but that doesn't make it less true.

The common usage of the term is not the scientifically correct usage.

Read the Wikipedia article (if you haven't already). This could be refracted images in the sky of real buildings.
