White privilege (pic) (edited)
Edited on Sat Nov-12-11 11:58 AM by Brickbat
You know what? I'm going to edit this.

This post originally showed a demotivational-like poster saying "White Privilege" with a photo of Penn State kids rioting and burning something.

The text was "White Privilege: When you can totally destroy everything in sight to defend the honor of an old white guy who raped a bunch of poor black kids...and you're not gonna get killed by police, not matter what you burn down."

That is the post that comments 1-4 are responding to.

I was focusing on the privilege of the rioters, and comments, as you can see, went to the race of the victims. On other boards I'm on, the race of the victims has been discussed a lot, but, I realize now, not confirmed. So that was irresponsible of me.

I don't usually do this kind of "whoopsie, take it back," but I am now, and for that I apologize. I do think there are things to think about regarding race, class and rioting, but this graphic wasn't the way to start that conversation.

1. If the majority of the victims had been white girls,

the question has to be asked if something would have been done to stop this monster sooner.

Sadly, I think we all know the answer to that question.

8. Yes, we do know the answer to that.
On campus, a law enforcement system unto itself

After the body of an Eastern Michigan University freshman was found in her dorm room in December 2006, naked from the waist down with a pillow over her head, the chief of the university police said there was “no reason to suspect foul play,” and let her parents believe she had died of natural causes.

That silence held for more than two months. In that time, the student who was eventually convicted in her murder had free run of a campus where he was previously caught climbing into a window of a university building.

In recent years Marquette University has been accused of mishandling accusations of sexual assault by four athletes, and Arizona State has been faulted in handling a student's rape, allegedly by a football player with a history of sexual aggression on campus.

<snip>

“I think we're just on the cusp of breaking the silence,” said Colby Bruno, the managing lawyer at the Boston-based Victim Rights Law Center who specializes in cases of sexual assault on campus. “But there are a lot of very invidious ways that a school can go about squelching these reports. This is everyone's problem; it's not just a sports problem or a sports-icon problem.”

2. Have they released the identities of the victims?
What am I missing here? Why are you making this about race?

Unrec for sheer stupidity.

6. There are "unconfirmed" reports that the overwhelming majority of the victims were black.

That's what I believe the OP is basing this thread off of.

4. Let me count the ways
1) Even if we accept that the students who did riot "totally destroyed everything in sight," the notion that they were "defending the honor" of Sandusky is just silly. Students were clearly angry about the treatment of Paterno by the Board.

2) If these were Second Mile kids from the surrounding communities, the chances that they were African Americans is exceedingly slim. Far more likely, they were poor and disadvantaged white kids.

Dumbest post on this matter yet. Unrec for know-nothingness.

You need to start getting more reliable information. It's obvious she's not black.

7. not to be argumentative but,
that doesn't mean anything.

I don't know whether the kid is black or not, but I can tell you that I'm white as can be and MY son is 100% African American black. So, you can't really make that kind of statement, ya know?

12. What rush to judgement?
I have pointed out that no one knows the race of the victims, but that one of the victim's mothers is white. Which is a fact.

Do you have a problem with stating facts?

19. What the FUCK is with the obsession and speculation about the race of the victims?
Edited on Sat Nov-12-11 01:26 PM by Nye Bevan
I really don't give a shit whether the victims were white, black, Hispanic, Asian, or anything else. Child rape is a horrendous crime REGARDLESS of what race the victims happened to be. It's unbelievable that DUers are bickering with each other over whether one of the victims was black, based upon the what the mother's hair looks like. Let's just focus on the horrific crime and stop playing with hypothetical scenarios to try to make some kind of political point.

issue other than with people who like to shit-stir over every possible angle of what is a straight-forward, and horrific, story.

28. +1000.
most people of privilege still don't "get" that.

The crime is horrendous regardless of the color of the child.

The level of investigation? - well most of us know it IS directly proportional to the race of the victim and/or perp. A sad fact, but a true fact.

I couldn't understand why this huge 28 year old wouldn't try and save this child from being sexually abused. Then I figured it was because he didn't know the kid and it wasn't anyone related to him. If that is his reasoning then he is a very sad individual. He should have rescued him whether he was related or if they were non-caucasian.

The media sure has done a fine job of making Paterno out to be a worse person than the actual RAPIST SANDUSKY !!!

35. I noticed a major news service calling the riots, 'quasi riots.' Really? I saw the news car flipped.
On its side, why isn't that a riot?

And as far as the race or gender of the victims, it's more about economic class than anything else. Could they have bought silence or intimidated children from stable, wealthy homes?

No, these children were targeted because they were disadvantaged. The same forces that create the trouble in the communities causing poverty, come to take the very last vestige of dignity from the poor.

It's a more complicated to pull this stuff than it was in the days of old when the local aristocracy obtained the newest peasant bride for the first night because of power, wealth and privileges. If you don't get to own your own body, there is very little left for you feel empowered about or advance in life.
