Maryland Governor Casts Vote for Ronald Reagan

Source: Poiitical Wire

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said he “voted for Ronald Reagan” in this year’s election, writing in the name of the late president and conservative icon after concluding that he could support neither President Trump nor Democratic nominee Joe Biden, the Washington Post reports.

“Hogan’s latest rejection of his party’s standard-bearer comes as he works to expand his political network nationwide ahead of a possible 2024 presidential bid, with a flurry of fundraisers this month for GOP candidates from Vermont to Nebraska who also cast themselves as pragmatic Republicans.”

Hollywood gives Biden's digital campaign final star-studded push

Source: The Hill

With less than three weeks until Election Day, Joe Biden's campaign is making its final push of star power, rolling out a series of virtual events featuring some of Hollywood's biggest names in an attempt to propel the former vice president past the finish line.

The Democratic presidential nominee's campaign scheduled celebrity-filled events for nearly every day this week. Tuesday featured three separate functions with some star wattage: a Latino-focused roundtable with comedian George Lopez, a "Star Trek" discussion with “Next Generation” alumnus LeVar Burton and a military service celebration with legendary TV producer Norman Lear.

The following day, the cast of NBC's "The West Wing" reunited for a virtual trivia night to benefit the Biden Victory Fund, the joint fundraising committee set up between the Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee. On Friday, another fundraising reunion is poised to take place: The original cast of Broadway's "Hamilton" — including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom, Jr. and Renée Elise Goldsberry, among others — are joining together for a virtual performance and Q&A.

On Friday, the Biden camp announced that NBA great Magic Johnson would be hitting the campaign trail over the weekend for the ex-VP, traveling to Detroit and Lansing, Mich. for a "roundtable conversation about voting with Black men" and a voter mobilization event. "Scandal" star Kerry Washington and actor Nnamdi Asomugha are also poised to head to North Carolina on Saturday with the Biden campaign to advocate for early voting.

Chris Christie, out of hospital after battling Covid, urges Trump to go further on masks

Source: Politico

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, newly recovered from the coronavirus, urged President Donald Trump on Friday to encourage the wearing of face masks among Americans.

In his first TV interview since contracting Covid-19 earlier this month, Christie — a close ally of the White House who served as the president’s debate coach last month — said it was not enough for Trump to merely express approval of masks, as he did at a town hall event the previous evening.

“You know, I heard the president say last night that he has no problem with masks. I think we should be even more affirmative about it. That’s why I put out the statement I did,” Christie told host George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Christie, who announced that he had tested positive on Oct. 3, is one of roughly three dozen people who has been diagnosed with the coronavirus in relation to a White House outbreak that emerged in late September and early October.

Pfizer won't seek coronavirus vaccine authorization until after election

Source: Politico

Pfizer will not seek an emergency authorization for its coronavirus vaccine until after the election, the final blow to President Donald Trump's repeated pledges to make a shot available before Americans cast votes amid the worst pandemic in a century.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said Friday that the company may know whether its vaccine is effective by the end of October, but won't have the safety data the FDA wants at least until the end of November. Amid rising concerns about political pressure on the agency, the FDA released guidance on emergency authorizations that requires vaccine developers to provide two months of safety data on half of the trial participants following the final dose of the vaccine.

"Let me be clear, assuming positive data, Pfizer will apply for Emergency Authorization Use in the U.S. soon after the safety milestone is achieved in the third week of November," Bourla wrote in an open letter.

Moderna, the other company with a vaccine in a late-stage trial with more than 20,000 enrolled, has also said it won't be ready to file for an emergency authorization before the election. Other vaccines could be ready for FDA review late this year or early 2021, but not by Nov. 3.

Putin proposes yearlong extension of nuclear pact with U.S.

Source: Politico

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday made a strong call to save the last existing nuclear arms control pact between his country and the United States, proposing to extend it at least for one year.

Putin’s statement comes amid conflicting signals from Russian and U.S. diplomats about the fate of the New START treaty that is set to expire in February unless Moscow and Washington agree on its extension.

Speaking at a meeting of his Security Council, Putin said that “it would be extremely sad if the treaty ceases to exist without being replaced by another fundamental document of the kind.”

“All those years, the New START has worked, playing its fundamental role of limiting and containing an arms race,” he noted.

Trump blasts Susan Collins over SCOTUS amid reelection fight

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump on Friday attacked Maine Sen. Susan Collins over her stated opposition to Amy Coney Barrett's nomination to the Supreme Court, lashing out at one of the most vulnerable Senate Republicans less than three weeks before Election Day.

“There is a nasty rumor out there that @SenatorCollins of Maine will not be supporting our great United States Supreme Court Nominee,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Well, she didn’t support Healthcare or my opening up 5000 square miles of Ocean to Maine, so why should this be any different. Not worth the work!”

Despite the president's assertion, Collins' opposition to Barrett's nomination and confirmation is more than a rumor. In fact, the Maine senator argued last month that the vacancy should be filled by whoever wins the presidency on Nov. 3.

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski was the only other Republican senator to oppose moving forward with a confirmation vote before Election Day. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has nonetheless secured enough support from his GOP caucus to see that Barrett ascends to the Supreme Court.

Tab, the iconic diet soda, will be gone by end of the year

USA Today

It's the end of an era.

TaB, the diet soda of choice for a generation of calorie counters will disappear by the end of the year, one of several drinks Coca-Cola is paring to focus on drinks with more popularity or potential.

"The objective is to drive impact and growth,'' Cath Coetzer, The Coca-Cola Company's global head of innovation and marketing operations said in a statement. "It’s about continuing to follow the consumer and being very intentional in deciding which of our brands are most deserving of our investments and resources, and also taking the tough but important steps to identify those products that are losing relevance and therefore should exit the portfolio.''

ZICO coconut water and Coca-Cola's Odwalla line of products will also be making an exit in the U.S.

The last saccharine-based soda if memory serves.
