what's your favorite bean?

we plan to focus on growing beans next year, as our hugelkulture will need the nitrogen for a year or 2. so we are looking for interesting and tasty beans that we can seed save.
will probably do a teenie bit of the three sisters thing and tuck in a couple melons and squash, but to run and shade out the weeds. suggestions for that welcome also.

i have blocked vanje from this group.

i believe she followed a member in here to continue a spat from feminism and meta. a word police spat, no less.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1151&pid=2083

i think that is just about as unacceptable as it gets. libodem deleted all her comments from the thread, so when i alerted on vanje's post, it was pretty impossible to judge.

i pm'ed eferrari, who is the other host, but she has not answered after a day, so i am going ahead with this. if people object to this, please let me know and i will consider your input. but...

do NOT stand in long lines to vote on tuesday

without trying to fix it.
go right now, get your phone. load the numbers of your local board of election, your state's attorney, and this number- the obama campaign Voter Hotline: 1-800-311-VOTE.

i went to early vote yesterday. i was told the wait was 2 1/2 hours. i didn't have that kind of time. but i went and talked to the judge that was tending the long snaking line. i asked her if they could get more machines. she told me there were 2 more machines but they had no place to put them. except that they were in a room with a collapsible wall into an empty room. so i asked why they didn't put them there. she said the park district wouldn't let them (most early voting places here are park fieldhouses)
so, i talked to the park guy. "yes, the room is empty. but i don't have anything to do with that, that is the board of elections." so i dragged him over, and had him repeat what he had said to the judge. she bloviated about why she couldn't do anything, then asked me to leave the building! (she was quite a snot.) after passing out the number for the board of elections (which is in my phone because i usually judge) i got outside and called.
boe says they will check it out. i call my alderman. he calls the board. about 15 minutes later, he calls me back to say that they sent a supervisor out, and they were setting up the machines.
he also sent an email to his rather extensive email list to tell them that the wait was shorter at the polling place in the next ward, and that they could go there.

now, i am pretty sure that anyone turned away will vote on tuesday. also pretty sure that more people got through the line because i didn't take 2 1/2 hours for an answer.
i am not anybody big. i'm sure we all know someone who could help out in that situation like my alderman did. especially if it were tuesday.
so, be prepared. have a plan. have a place to start. know the rules. don't take forever for an answer.

add your suggestions for contact info you should have here. i know there have been some twitter tags mentioned. i am sure there are some good websites.

ok, get it? BE PREPARED. you can make change happen.

hazelnuts, chestnuts, or??

looking at next years planting, and want to grow some nuts. don't want a huge tree. i think some of the hybrid chestnuts are a little easier to dwarf, but not sure.
hazel bushes would be fine, and that is where we are leaning. plus i love hazels. but skinning and all is labor, and that will be a factor.
think i might xpost this in cooking, but will get a little feedback first.

bought a little green canary mostly to entertain the parrots and keep the screaming down. the little bugger just sings like a maniac. what a glorious sound. can't help smiling.

name that weed

can someone identify this weed? it appears to be something in the nightshade family, and i wonder if the chickens could eat it. obviously leery. but they have picked my yard pretty clean, and i am looking to weeds at the farm that i can harvest. these are kinda plentiful. the berries are purple when they ripen.

feral cats and dog chews

ok, first, feral cats. i know there are some in my hood, but would like them to hang out a little closer to my farm. i am getting some good advice on all matters feral cat but we are stumped on one point- how to put out food for feral cats without attracting exactly the kind of critters that the cats are supposed to repel. especially in the beginning. so, any ideas along these lines are greatly appreciated.

second, dog chews. so, one of my pups has allergies. we have managed to find a few types of dogfood without beef, pork or potatoes. what we need now is chewies. rawhide is out. our favorite- cows feet is also out, and the obvious replacements- goat or deer are too small to be safe chews. looking for buffalo feet, but leary of getting beefalo. working on finding some goat or deer femurs, but...
the other good one is antlers, but geez, i think i can get a leg of lamb for the cost of a couple antlers.
anybody have an brilliant ideas on where to get good alternatives?
