Liberal candidate Janet Protasiewicz advances in Wisconsin Supreme Court race

Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz, a liberal candidate, is projected to advance to the April 4 general election in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race after she became the top vote-getter on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

Protasiewicz was one of two liberal candidates vying for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which was left open after conservative Justice Patience Roggensack announced she would not be seeking another term. Protasiewicz will be going head to head against a conservative candidate — wither Jennifer Dorow or Daniel Kelly — for the open seat in April.

The state Supreme Court race has drawn national attention given that Roggensack’s retirement leaves an even 3-3 partisan split on the court, meaning that whoever wins the open seat will tilt its ideological makeup. Among some of the issues that the new state Supreme Court could weigh in on could include abortion rights, redistricting and even possible future election result disputes.

Alec Baldwin 'Rust' prosecutors concede embarrassing early loss

The idiot DA charged Alec Baldwin under a law that was not in existence at the time of the offense. Alec Baldwin's attorneys called this out and the DA was forced to drop this enhancement

https://www.msnbc.com/deadline-white-house/deadline-legal-blog/alec-baldwin-rust-gun-enhancement-rcna71545

As I explained last week, Baldwin’s attorneys challenged the gun-charge enhancement that New Mexico prosecutors initially tagged on the actor in the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. (Baldwin has denied any wrongdoing.) The enhancement carries a five-year mandatory penalty, instead of the 18 months he could otherwise face if convicted of involuntary manslaughter. The problem with that enhancement, however, is that it didn’t become law until after the alleged crime. That’s a big no-no, Constitution-wise, as Baldwin’s attorneys pointed out......

But the DA’s explanation for why the office agreed to downgrade the charge is even more shocking than the legal flop itself. According to spokesperson Heather Brewer:

In order to avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys, the District Attorney and the special prosecutor have removed the firearm enhancement to the involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Halyna Hutchins on the “Rust” film set. The prosecution’s priority is securing justice, not securing billable hours for big-city attorneys.

At least a couple of things are wrong with this statement.

For starters, it’s difficult to believe that the prosecutor is dropping the most serious potential punishment to avoid “litigious distractions,” whatever that even means. It should go without saying, but a prosecutor’s decisions need to be based on the evidence; if a prosecutor is distracted by legal arguments, then they’re in the wrong line of work. And Baldwin’s argument was clearly more than a distraction, because it caused the most significant possible prison time against him to disappear at the outset of the case.....

Instead, it looks like there’s something more straightforward at play: The prosecution was sloppy in charging, Baldwin’s lawyers raised a clear constitutional issue and the prosecution rightly folded. Now, prosecutors are licking their wounds and lashing out about their misstep with a statement that doesn’t reflect well on the DA’s office or the future of a case that looked shaky from the start.

The Georgia grand jury that investigated possible interference in the 2020 election by Donald Trump and his allies recommended indictments against over a dozen people, the jury foreperson said Tuesday — a list she said "might" include the former president.

"There are certainly names that you will recognize, yes. There are names also you might not recognize," Emily Kohrs said in an interview that will air Tuesday on NBC News’ “Nightly News.”

She said the list of recommended indictments is "not a short list."

"There are definitely some names you expect," she said, declining to name any specific names as per the instructions of the judge who presided over the grand jury.

"I don’t think that there are any giant plot twists coming. I don’t think there's any giant ‘That’s not the way I expected this to go at all’ moments," she said. “I would not expect you to be shocked."

4 things to know about Ron DeSantis' idea to slash AP courses in Florida

This is sad. You qualify for National Merit Scholarships on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT. Florida has some very low SAT scores and so it may not matter if Florida students are not eligible for National Merit Scholarships. National Merit Scholarships are hard to get but are nice on a resume.

In addition, AP scores can get you placed out of classes. They did not offer AP courses at my school a long long time ago but my kids each got over 20 hours of AP credit. One child used these hours to do three majors since that child had a full scholarship and another child graduated in 3 years. AP credits are very valuable to many students.

The test that DeathSantis wants to use as a replacement for the SAT is a test used mainly by home schoolers.

As DeSantis noted in 2021, the College Board is a major player in providing accelerated academic courses to high school students.

In 2021, the state had 199,428 teens sit for 366,150 AP exams, with 50.9% scoring a 3 or better on the 5-point scale. Many universities across the nation offer students credit for those scores — a critical factor for families looking to lower tuition.....

In addition to its AP courses, the College Board administers the SAT college entrance exam. Just over 190,000 Florida high schoolers took the test in 2022, representing 87% of possible students. Its average score was among the lowest 10 in the nation.

The ACT college entrance exam, administered by a separate nonprofit, is also available but has much lower participation

I am not surprised to see that the test that DeathSantis wants to use in place of the SAT is a test being used by home schoolers.

High-ranking Department of Education officials have hinted in social media that an organization called Classic Learning Test, or CLT, is a potential option to fill in for SAT.

Primarily used by home-schooling families, Classic Learning Test is touted by supporters as an alternative “that orients people to the perennial truths of the great classical and Christian tradition.

DeathSantis may end up pissing off some parents who have high performing students who would benefit from AP credits and scholarships
