Inmates use Yelp.com To Rate The Service Of Their Prisons

Lawyer Robert Miller has visited five prisons and 17 jails in his lifetime, but he has reviewed only three of them on Yelp. One he found “average,” with inexperienced and power-hungry officers. Another he faulted for its “kind of very firmly rude staff.” His most recent review, a January critique of Theo Lacy jail in Orange County, Calif., lauds the cleanliness, urban setting and “very nice” deputies.

Miller gave it five out of five stars.

“I started reviewing because I needed something to kill time while I waited to see clients,” said Miller, who has worked as a private defense lawyer in Southern California for 18 years. “But I think the reviews are actually helpful for bail bondsmen, attorneys, family members — a lot of people, actually.”

As Miller acknowledges, it’s not the kind of helpful testimonial commonly found on Yelp, the popular consumer reviews site many people turn to for recommendations on, say, bowling alleys and Chinese takeout. But as Yelp grows more popular — logging 36 million reviews as of last quarter — lawyers as well as prison inmates and their family members have turned to the site to report mediocre food and allegations of serious abuse. They join the enterprising reviewers who have used Yelp to critique traffic signals and public bathrooms.

How Did This Truck Get Stuck In A Tree?

SHERWOOD, Ore. – Firefighters and a towing company removed an empty truck from a tree Sunday morning, but they’re still confused about how it got there.

They found the truck 10 feet off the ground near Highway 99 and Middleton Road, southwest of Sherwood.

Firefighters said the truck had been empty for some time, and there were no signs that the driver was thrown from the truck or injured in the crash.

The woman who was driving the truck showed up while the truck was being removed from the tree. She told firefighters she was not hurt in the crash. The specific details of how her truck ended up so high in the tree are still unclear.

Scottish Cruise Company Buys Loch Ness Monster Collision Coverage

A CRUISE company has insured its luxury fleet for more than £1million — against damage by the LOCH NESS MONSTER.

Jacobite Cruises, which carries more than 100,000 sightseers on the world-famous loch every year, says it’s taking no chances of a monster payout.

Bosses struck the wacky deal with Inverness insurers Towergate Moray Firth last week — the 80th anniversary of the first Nessie spotting.

Jacobite owner Freda Newton admitted: “I don’t know what the odds of this actually happening might be but this is Loch Ness and how silly would we look if it did and we weren’t covered for it?

“I hope we never have to make a claim and if Nessie does make another appearance, she gives our boats a wide berth.” Bob Jack, director of Towergate Moray Firth, said: “This is probably the most unusual insurance request we have ever had, but we were delighted to provide cover to Jacobite Cruises.

Reykjavik Mayor Dresses As Jedi To Cast Vote

Obama showed off his sense of humor at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on the weekend — but he's still not the most fun politician in the world. That honor might go to Jón Gnarr, the mayor of Iceland's capital Reykjavik. According to Redditor shawtay, Gnarr donned his best Jedi robes when he voted in the country's election on the weekend. In fairness to less funny politicans, Gnarr has an advantage: He was a professional comedian before he turned politician (his political party, the Best Party, was originally founded as a joke), and he's frequently gone out in public dressed as a Jedi and letting his geek flag fly. STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 28 (UPI) -- An elderly couple have been charged with harassment for playing Iron Maiden songs at top volume toward their neighbors' home, Swedish police said.

The couple was taking revenge on their new neighbors in the Stockholm area, who they said were too loud, Aftonbladet Daily reported Sunday.

The 71-year-old woman, whose name was not reported, said the new neighbors were so loud, she had to take sleeping pills in order to sleep.

"We wanted to give a taste of their own medicine," her 81-year-old husband
said.
The couple set up a music system on their balcony facing their neighbor's home, police said.

San Francisco Man Poses As Congo President's Son, Gets $1.6 Million, Jail

SAN FRANCISCO – A San Francisco man was in federal custody Friday on charges that he defrauded a Northern California real estate agent and his girlfriend out of $1.6 million by pretending to be the son of Congo's president.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco said Blessed Marvelous Herve persuaded the couple to forward him the money over four years with promises of repayment, lucrative commissions, and multi-million bonuses and a collection of impressive-looking documents that included a certificate of recognition from a U.S. senator.

Instead, they received excuses and demands for more funds, according to an affidavit prepared by the FBI agent who investigated the case.

The affidavit states that Herve told the Marin County real estate agent that his father wanted to buy luxury homes in the San Francisco Bay area, but that first he needed help recovering millions of dollars seized by the U.S. government, advances so he could rent limousines to tour potential properties, and additional financial assistance paying IRS debts and costs associated with other legal troubles.

Two Friends Dead Over Fight Concerning Phish Concert Tickets

Two men in Washington, Pa., are dead after an apparent murder-suicide that authorities suspect was sparked by an argument over Phish concert tickets.

Nate Roman, 30, was shot multiple times early Thursday morning after a fight with longtime friend Michael Marchines, 31, at a local bar. He later died at a local hospital.

Investigators haven't released details on the fight, but family members told KDKA-TV that the argument may have been over concert tickets for the rock band Phish, which Roman had recently purchased for $3,000.

Roman's death was ruled a homicide and, after an extensive search, police found Marchines dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, WTAE-TV reported.

The murder-suicide has rocked the town where the two grew up and knew each for decades, according to longtime friend Matt Staniszewski.

Mom Calls "Anne Frank's Diary" Pornographic, Demands It Be Removed From School Curriculum

The Anne Frank Diary is 'pornographic' according to one mother who has lodged a formal complaint over the book being used in school to educate her own child.

Mom, Gail Horalek, has filed a formal complaint against her daughter's school district over its use of the Anne Frank Diary, saying that many of the passages contained in the book are way to graphic for seventh graders like her daughter.

The mother highlights one part of the book in which Frank discusses discovering her genitalia, and Horalek has said it is akin to pornography, and is completely inappropriate for her child and her schoolmates.

She has complained that Meads Mill Middle School should have asked parents to sign a permission slip before they assigned the book to the children to read, due to the content.

Right. A young woman's harrowing tale of being hunted by the Nazis is porn. There you have it - the GOP's inane Nazi references have come full circle.

US Ambassador Tells Australia To Quit Pirating "Game Of Thrones"

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Taking to Facebook, the U.S. ambassador to Australia is urging Australians to cease their illegal downloads of "Game of Thrones", saying that they are among the world's worst pirates of the wildly popular medieval television drama.

In a post titled "Stopping the Game of Clones", Jeffrey Bleich - himself a devotee of the HBO series - compared the rampant piracy of online thieves to the plotting and machinations of the noble houses in the show.

"Unfortunately, nearly as epic and devious as the drama is its unprecedented theft by online viewers around the world," he wrote on his official Facebook page.

"As the ambassador here in Australia, it was especially troubling to find out that Australian fans were some of the worst offenders with among the highest piracy rates of 'Game of Thrones' in the world".

TorrentFreak, a file-sharing news website, estimated that Game of Thrones was the most pirated TV series in 2012, with one episode notching 4.28 million pirated downloads, equal to the number of broadcast viewers for that episode, Bleich said.
