Dumb Criminals: Father Accused Of Putting Six Week Old In Freezer

TACOMA, Wash. - A six-week old baby is in the hospital after her father reportedly put the little girl in a freezer for an hour on Saturday afternoon to stop her from crying, Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Tyler Deutsch, 25, was arrested south of the Pierce County town of Roy for investigation of attempted murder, Troyer said. He is in the Pierce County Jail awaiting a Tuesday court appearance.

The little girl, who was taken to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital, had a body temperature of 84 degrees, but is expected to recover, Troyer said.

The girl's 22-year-old mother frantically called police when she saw her boyfriend taking the infant out of the freezer.

Troyer said police believe the baby was left in the freezer for about an hour at the couple's home in the 7600 block of 320th Street South.

Canadian Money Suspiciously Smells Like Maple Syrup

OTTAWA - The penny may be history, but some Canadians suspect the Bank of Canada has been circulating a new scent along with its plastic bank notes.

Dozens of people who contacted the bank in the months after the polymer notes first appeared asked about a secret scratch-and-sniff patch that apparently smells like maple syrup.

"I would like to know ... once and for all if these bills are in fact scented, as I do detect a hint of maple when smelling the bill," says a typical email from a perplexed citizen.

Said another: "They all have a scent which I'd say smells like maple? Please advise if this is normal?"

Under the Access to Information Act, The Canadian Press obtained a year's worth of correspondence to the Bank of Canada from ordinary Canadians about the new currency. Names were withheld to protect privacy.

North Dakota Now Has The Highest Concentration Of Bars Per Capita In The US

FARGO – North Dakotans’ boozy ways are fueled by the most bars per capita in the United States.

There’s one bar for every 1,620 North Dakotans, according to The Forum’s analysis of U.S. Census Bureau business patterns data from 2011, the most recent year that information is available.

That narrowly beats out neighboring Montana and puts North Dakota well above Minnesota, which ranks 17th.

North Dakota also has the sixth-most liquor stores per capita in the country: one per 1,937 residents.

Australian Rules Football Player Takes Time Out Of Match To Point Out Racist Fan

An Australian Rules footballer has been praised for his uncompromising reaction after a 13-year-old girl shouted out a racist remark to him during a game on Friday night.

Sydney Swans forward Adam Goodes - who is an Aboriginal Australian - was called an 'ape' by the girl as he ran past her and responded by turning around and pointing out the girl to security who escorted her from the Melbourne stadium.

Goodes, 33, is the star player for the Sydney Swans but said that the racial abuse he received at the hands of the girl rendered his sides win 'meaningless' - such was his disappointment.

Racist: Adam Goodes points to the 13-year-old girl after she shouted 'Ape' at him

'To come to the boundary line and hear a 13 year old girl call me an 'ape', and it's not the first time on a footy field that I've been referred to as a 'monkey' or an 'ape', it was shattering,' he told the ABC.

Dolphin Assisted Birth Quite Possibly The Worst Idea Ever

The couple planning to do this are entirely serious—and they won’t be the first to travel to Hawaii for a dolphin-assisted birth. My professional opinion: this has to be, hands down, one of the worst natural birthing ideas anyone has ever had (and that is saying a lot).

Let’s talk about dolphins for a moment. I get it — they’re stunning creatures. These sleek, smart, playful animals are almost universally loved by people. Dolphin interactive experiences are hot sellers at tourist locations worldwide, and we naturally want to trust their cheeky, smiling faces. So many people I know got into marine science because of their affinity for dolphins and other marine mammals. I understand why a to-be mother might want to calm her nerves by having a dolphin in the tub during an underwater birth. I can even stretch my imagination and see why a woman would enjoy swimming with a pod of dolphins and giving birth while watching the beautiful displays of these majestic animals.

Illinois Teacher Under Investigation For Reminding Students About 5th Amendment

A Batavia High School teacher's fans are rallying to support him as he faces possible discipline for advising students of their Constitutional rights before taking a school survey on their behavior.

They've been collecting signatures on an online petition, passing the word on Facebook, sending letters to the school board, and planning to speak at Tuesday's school board meeting.

Students and parents have praised his ability to interest reluctant students in history and current affairs.

But John Dryden said he's not the point. He wants people to focus on the issue he raised: Whether school officials considered that students could incriminate themselves with their answers to the survey that included questions about drug and alcohol use.

Dryden, a social studies teacher, told some of his students April 18 that they had a 5th Amendment right to not incriminate themselves by answering questions on the survey, which had each student's name printed on it.

The Japanese Government Is Denying That Ghosts Exist In The Prime Minister's Mansion

(Reuters) - A delay in Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife moving into their official residence, the site of past assassinations, has revived talk of ghosts in the corridors, prompting the government to deny any knowledge of hauntings.

Abe has not moved into the prime minister's official residence for five months since he took power.

Asked by an opposition lawmaker about the reported hauntings, the government issued a formal statement on Friday saying it was not aware of ghost sightings, Asahi newspaper and other media reported.

The residence, formerly the prime minister's office, was built in 1929 and was the site of military rebellions, including in 1932 when then-Prime Minister Tsuyoshi Inukai was assassinated.

In America this would create a whole new category of voting conspiracy theorists called "ghosters".

Vengeful Badger Causing Problems At UK Girls' School

Parents of pupils at the Folkestone School for Girls in Folkestone, Kent, say the large badger has been skulking around school grounds for the past two weeks.

One mother, who asked not to be named, said that a badger sett in the school grounds had been disturbed by recent building work and that the badgers were "causing hysteria" among pupils.

She said: "The badger has been spotted several times within the grounds, scaring the living daylights out of the teenage girls."

"It is a giant badger and it is causing hysteria – there are hundreds of screaming, hysterical girls."

Dumb Criminals: Judge Arrested While Wearing "Bad Is My Middle Name" Shirt

BELLEVILLE • A courthouse drug scandal expanded Friday with charges alleging that a St. Clair County probation worker used cocaine repeatedly with two judges and provided the dose that killed one of them.

James K. Fogarty, of the probation office’s investigative unit, told officials he bought cocaine and re-sold it to Associate Judge Joseph Christ and Circuit Judge Michael N. Cook the day before the two went to a hunting lodge where Christ died March 10.

Fogarty, 45, was charged in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis with distribution and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He was held pending another hearing.

Earlier Friday, Cook, 43, appeared in the same courthouse to answer charges of being an unlawful user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm, and a misdemeanor charge of possession of heroin.

The firearm reference may relate to guns Cook used for hunting.

Apparently wearing the clothes in which he was arrested Wednesday night, Cook attended the hearing in cut-off jeans and a blue T-shirt with the words “Bad is my middle name.”
