LA utility criticized for how cat rescue turned out, worker dropped cat in front of onlookers

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is facing criticism after a video showed a worker dropping a cat from a crane bucket at a height of 15 to 20 feet.
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-video-ladwp-drops-cat-20141120-story.html

The worker had just rescued the cat from high on a power pole in Sunland. Video shows the apparently long drop and the stunned reactions of onlookers. But was the cat really in danger?
KTLA-TV reported that the cat had been stuck on the pole for three days and that residents called the Los Angeles Fire Department and LADWP to get it down on Nov. 14. LADWP crews were on the scene by 3:30 p.m., said Michelle Figueroa, spokeswoman for the LADWP.

In the video, the worker takes the cat from the pole and then about halfway down drops the animal over the side. A woman standing by with a blanket is unable to catch the falling cat. KTLA reported that the drop was 15 to 20 feet.

"Sorry, but he was really clawing me up there," the worker says in the video, once the bucket is lowered.

Herrera said that in the case of the pole cat, its energetic run following the fall was a good sign.

"Likely if there had been any significant injury, it wouldn't have skedaddled so quickly."

n leave and charged with causing injury to a child after he tried to drag a 14-year-old girl into a swimming pool while she screamed and struggled to keep her swimsuit top from falling off. Another student caught everything on video.

The Stockton, Calif. high school student said she didn't want to swim because she'd had her hair done for an event later that day, News 10 reported, but 10-year veteran gym teacher Denny Peterson wouldn't take no for an answer.

In the 95-second video, Peterson can be seen dragging the girl across the pool deck and trying to force into the water as she screams for him to stop. Other students try to break it up. You can also hear the girl yelling "my shirt's falling down!" as he tries to pull her away from her friends.

Black woman is allergic to watermelon. "Just let that sink in your mind" say Lemony Snicket

(CNN) -- Jacqueline Woodson's big win at the National Book Awards on Wednesday was briefly eclipsed by a racially charged joke.
After Woodson accepted an award for her memoir "Brown Girl Dreaming," host Daniel Handler shared an anecdote he learned over the summer: that Woodson, who is black, is allergic to watermelon.
"Just let that sink in your mind," said Handler, who writes popular children's books under the pen name Lemony Snicket.

The non sequitur elicited a few laughs and uncomfortable titters from the audience. Handler went on to say that he advised Woodson to write a book that featured a black girl with a watermelon allergy. Watermelon is historically evoked as a favorite food among black people in racist jokes, and it's considered by many to be an offensive reference.http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/21/living/national-book-awards-woodson-handler-watermelon-joke/index.html

professional boxer vs "thugs"

The men are said to be part of a local gang which has been blamed for a rise in petty crime in the small Russian town.
When Vlasenko told the men to leave his wife alone, the self-declared leader, Leonti Yevdokimov, 33, suggested that he might want to continue the discussion outside.

there were at least ten of them, led by the two who thought they were real big shots,' eyewitness Eldar Vinogradoff, 27, said.
'One of them took off his shirt and started squaring up to the boxer, and I don't think he even knew what hit him when he went down like a bowling pin. A second man tried to kick the boxer and he was floored instantly as well.
'Then a third man joined in, and he was left staggering and on the point of collapsing after taking three blows to the head and not landing once himself.'

Kentucky fire chief refuses to help black family in traffic accident - "we ain't taking no n.ggers"

‘We ain’t taking no n*ggers here’: Kentucky fire chief refuses to help black family in traffic accident

A Kentucky fire chief is being criticized for racist comments after he refused to help a family of stranded motorists because they were black, and then suggested that an Asian-American television reporter did not understand English.

In a Bullitt County Sheriff’s deputy’s body camera recording obtained by WDRB, Southeast Bullitt County Fire Chief Julius Hatfield can be heard discussing a car accident on I-65 in September.

Hatfield first goes out of his way to provide assistance to Loren Dicken, who is white.

“You got a jack, ain’t you?” Hatfield asks the driver. “If you show me where them things is at, I’ll get my guys to start changing the tire for you.”

At first, Dicken turns down the offer, but Hatfield insists, saying, “It will save you a bill.”

Firefighters working for Hatfield even picked Dicken up from the hospital and took him back to the firehouse, where his car was ready and waiting.

But Hatfield treats the family of four black motorists completely differently.

“Well, I’ve got a family of four from Cincinnati, I got to do something with,” the Bullitt County deputy tells Hatfield over the radio.

“We ain’t taking no n*ggers here,” Hatfield replies, laughing.

Instead of offering to help driver Chege Mwangi, the deputy recommends that he call the AAA motor club.http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/11/we-aint-taking-no-nggers-here-kentucky-fire-chief-refuses-to-help-black-family-in-traffic-accident/

was from a body camera worn by a Bullitt County Sheriff’s deputy. The deputy’s camera showed the fire chief, Julius Hatfield, offering to assist the white driver, Loren Dicken. Hatfield tells Dicken that he’ll have some of his firefighters repair his truck’s tire while Dicken goes to the hospital to be examined. Per Hatfield’s conservation with Dicken, this would allow Dicken to avoid a towing bill. WDRB also discovered that firefighters picked up Dicken from the hospital and took him to his truck,

two cats are nervous witnesses to burglary

http://blog.sfgate.com/crime/2014/11/19/video-burglars-hit-palo-alto-home-as-housecats-look-on/

A Palo Alto resident’s video surveillance system caught two burglars breaking into her home as her pet cats looked on.

Police said they got a call about the burglary on the 1000 block of Tanland Drive at 6:42 p.m. Tuesday. The resident, a woman in her 40s who was at work during the incident, had a video camera perched by the stairs.

The video shows one of the woman’s cats waiting nervously at the top of the steps as the door is about to pop open. The glowing eyes of a second cat is seen peering out of a darkened room. Once the men get the door open, the first cat darts into the same room.

The two men forced entry with a crowbar, police said. Soon, one of them noticed the camera and ripped it off the wall.

However, the video was being sent in real time to a cloud server, police said.
