republican legislator suing 4 personal opt-out of birth control coverage 4 his family (3 daughters)

Well, it’s not a flood, but it is a one-man trickle. A Missouri Republican legislator is suing in federal court for a personal opt-out for his family.

State Rep. Paul Wieland is a devout Catholic who’s petitioned for an exemption to the birth control coverage included on the insurance policy he gets as an elected state official. He doesn’t want it to be available to his two adult daughters, ages 19 and 20, and his youngest daughter, 13. (For that matter, the policy covers birth control for Wieland’s wife, too, but that's not his grounds for suing.)

Otherwise, Wieland’s attorney told a federal appeals court, forcing Wieland to accept birth control coverage would be like forcing Mormon parents to “stock unlocked liquor cabinets” for their children when the parents are away.

Now, this is puzzling for a couple of reasons. The first is that conservatives argue consistently that matters of family morality aren’t for the government to intrude on – requiring sex education in schools comes to mind. But Wieland evidently wants the courts to help him manage his family’s morality by keeping his daughters away from the enticements of birth control.

Offensive rape shirt pulled from Phillipine stores

It’s a struggle to understand how anyone would wear this T-shirt.

ne of the biggest department stores in the Philippines has been forced to withdraw a T-shirt which appeared to justify rape after outrage erupted online.

The offending item, sold in the boys section at SM Supermalls, was emblazoned with the logo: “It’s not rape. It’s a snuggle with a struggle”.

An image of the T-shirt posted on writer Karen Kunawicz’s Facebook attracted nearly 4,000 shares with people taking to other social networking sites to express their outrage.

Writing on Facebook a few minutes after posting the image Ms Kunawicz said: “I count myself among those worked really hard especially in the 90's for the rights of girls and women so it really got me upset. I was shaking when I took it. I wanted to throw up. ”

Celine Ulgado said on Facebook: “SM needs to not only pull this shirt, they need to issue a very public apology to rape victims everywhere, and make a costly monetary donation to crisis centers that help rape victims.”

San Francisco restaurant closes and leaves angry note: "we don't give a f*** about gluten-free"

he owner of a San Francisco Chinese restaurant has temporarily closed his doors with an abrupt notice due to what he calls 'hard to please' customers.

Owner and chef James Chu put a sign on his door stating: 'We're closed because of you customers. Yes, we use MSG! We don't believe in organic food. And we don't give a f*** about gluten-free.'

The owner of So Restaurant said he was becoming increasingly annoyed with customers who were unsatisfied with his food.

After putting up his first sign, Chu then posted another, saying: 'We work hard to please everyone, but we know we can't.

'So if you're a hard to please, please just turn around and go somewhere else. Thanks!'

Soy sauce is one of the most popular ingredients used in Asian cuisine, but it contains gluten so a visit to a Chinese restaurant can generally prove tricky for customers who are allergic to it.

open letter to Brian Lederman from the woman he groped

http://www.alternet.org/woman-writes-epic-open-letter-hedge-fund-bro-who-allegedly-groped-her

Dear Brian,

You came into the restaurant where I work and ordered a Stoli on the rocks. When I asked you and your companion if you’d be eating, or needing anything else from me, you put your hand – ever so gently – ON MY ASS and asked if you could take me “to go”. When I immediately stepped away and said “Sorry, what?” you probably gathered that I was and am not receptive of such advances from customers. We were in a family-friendly restaurant, around 6:30pm, and I was wearing a loose-fitting, long sleeve shirt, jeans, and no makeup…so I’m not sure where the confusion arose as to what kind of service you were being provided. You left soon after, leaving a signed credit card slip and a two dollar tip (see picture included!). Your name is Brian Lederman. I found you, instantly, via a quick Google search online. I looked at your face on Linked In, the World’s Largest Professional Network. You work at Swiss Performance Management and Truehand AG, in Investment Management. Of course you do.

I work as a bartender, and have for more than five years now. I graduated NYU with honors, and have at some point held down every conceivable part time type job including but not limited to food service, administration, and even temp work at firms such as yours. So far, bartending allows me the most flexibility to pursue my artistic career, while comfortably covering my basic living expenses, including my outrageously high student loan payments. I have a good job that I’m grateful for. The environment is low key, I have incredibly supportive coworkers and managers, and – in general – the clientele is nice.

But I still hate being a bartender. Over the years my knowledge and skill set have expanded, but I seem to be getting worse at tolerating the “service” part. I deal with incredible amounts of entitlement, condescension, and drunk nonsense. And at a bar, it is impossible to ignore the fact that misogyny is alive and well. I can’t tell you how many times people have treated me horribly and I’ve memorized or photographed the names from their credit cards, fantasizing about internet revenge. But every time I’ve been tempted in the past (even after verbal attacks, physical affronts, or sexual harassment) I’ve stopped myself and let it go.

So congratulations, Brian! You’ve done it! You broke this tired ass camel’s back. And though this is obviously a public shaming, I truly don’t mean this as an attack. Maybe – just maybe – via the intimately connected internet world, my post will reach you, and you’ll learn something about how hurtful and upsetting a small comment or gesture might be. Or at the very least, maybe a Facebook passerby will read this and more deeply consider how they treat women, how they treat servers, and/or how they treat other people in general. And thank you. Without your inspiration I wouldn’t be quitting my job today, and endeavoring a better chapter of my life.
