Brokaw Uses New Poll as Excuse to Continue to Push for Cuts to 'Entitlements'

He just can't stop himself. It's only been a few weeks since Tom Brokaw was on Meet the Press, pushing for cuts to Social Security and Medicare and here he is back again this Sunday, this time using an new NBC/WSJ poll on the public's expectations going into President Obama's second term to push for cutting them again.

You know what's not "unexpected" Tom? That millionaire pundits like yourself are going to continue to push to gut our social safety nets because you don't want your taxes raised.

When I read that Americans believe we need to create jobs, fix the economy and stop the spending, the first things to come into my mind are stop outsourcing, quit with the race to the bottom on wages, quit busting unions and stop wasting money on our bloated military industrial complex. Somehow cutting Social Security benefits instead of raising the cap and cutting Medicare benefits by raising the eligibility age and forcing seniors into private insurance -- instead of addressing the real problems with our rising health care costs -- never made it onto my list. Imagine that.

Criminalizing Pregnancy: Study Finds Forced Interventions on Pregnant Women

A new study shows hundreds of women in the United States have been arrested, forced to undergo unwanted medical procedures, and locked up in jails or psychiatric institutions -- because they were pregnant.

National Advocates for Pregnant Women found 413 cases when pregnant women were deprived of their physical liberty between 1973, when Roe v. Wade was decided, and 2005. At least 250 more interventions have taken place since then. In one case, a court ordered a critically ill woman in Washington, D.C., to undergo a C-section against her will. Neither she nor the baby survived. In another case, a judge in Ohio kept a woman imprisoned to prevent her from having an abortion.

Maddow: Obama’s stance on debt ceiling shows ‘evolution’ in strategy

Rachel Maddow said on her Friday night show that Obama’s first term taught the president some tough lessons on partisanship and pushing his agenda.

The book Do Not Ask What Good We Do, by Robert Draper, and a new PBS documentary about the GOP’s plans to obstruct Obama’s agenda, illustrate just how determined the party has been to stop the new president from carrying out his agenda. “They decided that they needed to begin to fight Obama on everything,” the documentary says.

“This evolution in the president’s strategy for dealing with Republicans and recognizing their strategy against him and knowing what he can and cannot expect to get out of them. On the last business day of his first term, it paid off today,” as they offered a three-month extension on the debt ceiling, which Maddow called a “cave” on the part of the GOP.

GAO Cannot Audit Federal Government, Cites Department Of Defense Problems

The Government Accountability Office said Thursday that it could not complete an audit of the federal government, pointing to serious problems with the Department of Defense.

Along with the Pentagon, the GAO cited the Department of Homeland Security as having problems so significant that it was impossible for investigators to audit it. The DHS got a qualified audit for fiscal year 2012, and is seeking an unqualified audit for 2013.

The report released by the GAO on Friday indicates serious accounting problems at two of the largest government agencies: the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Defense has a net cost of $799.1 billion to the federal budget, while the Department of Homeland Security has a net cost of $48.7 billion.

Matalin: President Needs to be Less 'Self-Reverential' to Make Progress With Republicans

What is it with these Republicans who just can't stop themselves from coming just a hair shy of calling the President of the United States "uppity?" Last week, Bill-O was calling him "cocky" during his Talking Points Memo segment on Fox. Now we've got Lady McCheney Mary Matalin on Mrs. Greenspan's show calling him too "self-reverential" and "self-righteous" and that he wants Republicans to go along with him and pretend they care about doing their jobs and legislating, he'd better start acting nicer to them.

Andrea Mitchell reminded her that he didn't exactly have much good will from the other side, what with them immediately plotting on how to obstruct everything he tried to do from the day he got elected ........

Did Dennis Kucinich just take a Bribe?

It appears that it will be his job to supply the liberal perspective for on-air debate on the pressing issue of the day. Did Hillary Clinton fake a blood clot to avoid testifying about Benghazi? Should teachers be required to carry Uzis? Is Barack Obama more socialist or fascist? Is Barack Obama an King or dictator?

Will Kucinich be used as the face of a democratic party stooge to support Fox propaganda play of the day?

PA GOP Introduces Bill To Rig 2016 Electoral Votes

On Monday, seven Pennsylvania Republican state representatives introduced a bill to make this vote-rigging scheme a reality in their state. Under their bill, the winner of Pennsylvania as a whole will receive only 2 of the state’s 20 electoral votes, while “[e]ach of the remaining presidential electors shall be elected in the presidential elector’s congressional district.”

Pennsylvania is a blue state that voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in every single presidential race for the last two decades, so implementing the GOP election-rigging plan in Pennsylvania would make it much harder for a Democrat to be elected to the White House. Moreover, because of gerrymandering, it is overwhelmingly likely that the Republican candidate will win a majority of Pennsylvania’s electoral votes even if the Democrat wins the state by a very comfortable margin. Despite the fact that President Obama won Pennsylvania by more than 5 points last November, Democrats carried only 5 of the state’s 18 congressional seats. Accordingly, Obama would have likely won only 7 of the state’s 20 electoral votes if the GOP vote rigging plan had been in effect last year.

Paul Ryan: GOP Leaders Managing Expectations In Debt Ceiling Fight

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Thursday said Republicans are weighing the option of a short-term debt limit extension, but that House GOP leaders are using their annual retreat to highlight the "realities of divided government" and set expectations among members of their caucus as a number of fiscal deadlines approach.

The House GOP’s Intentional-Losing Strategy (Crazy Talk?)

Then what? Politico reports that Republicans may stage a government shutdown to let frustrated conservatives work out some anger issues. (“We might need to [shut down the government] for member-management purposes — so they have an endgame and can show their constituents they’re fighting.”)

Governing in the greatest nation on Earth!

Filibuster Reform vote Jan. 22: Keep calling senators

you can help hold that group together. We need strong filibuster reform, not a weaker version. Call your senator if you believe in this (click to find the phone number).

In addition, call these senators — they are the Democrats flirting with “well, I don’t really know” when the last public list of supporters was announced:

Baucus Max MT D (202) 224-2651
Boxer BarbaraCA D (202) 224-3553
Feinstein DianneCA D (202) 224-3841
Heitkamp Heidi ND D (202) 224-2043
Hirono Mazie HI D (202) 224-6361
Leahy PatrickVT D (202) 224-4242
Reed Jack RI D (202) 224-4642

As of last report, these are the Democratic waverers (and shame on them). Please make the calls, now and daily (if you can) until January 22.
