New Mexico museum scuttles Darwin events after creationists demand ‘intelligent design’ coverage

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History canceled a series of events honoring scientist Charles Darwin after two local retired engineers lobbied for discussions on “intelligent design” to be included, KRQE-TV reported.

“It’s a very controversial issue,” said James Campbell, one of the men who contacted state officials. “There’s a tremendous body of evidence against Darwinian evolution, and we think people should be aware of that.”

Campbell and Mike Edenburn, both former employees of the Sandia National Laboratories facility in Albuquerque, wrote Gov. Susana Martinez’s (R) office after seeing a flyer for the “Darwins Day” event listing the museum as a co-sponsor alongside groups like the Humanist Society of New Mexico, New Mexicans for Science & Reason (NMSR), and the Alburquerque chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation.


The events were slated to coincide with International Charles Darwin Day, which honors Darwin’s “remarkable impact on biology, cosmology, and the scientific process.”

‘Shut Down Homan Square’: Anonymous, Black Lives Matter swarm Chicago police ‘black site’

Chicago police facility Homan Square was becoming the focus of an organized protest movement this weekend, as the hacktivist collective Anonymous and organizers associated with the Black Lives Matter movement seized on allegations of unconstitutional abuse at the secretive warehouse.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the former top adviser to Barack Obama suddenly facing a runoff for re-election, remained at the political fulcrum of a mounting campaign both on social media and the streets of Chicago, where demonstrations were planned for Saturday outside what coordinated campaigners described as mirroring a CIA “black site”.

Organizer Travis McDermott said Saturday’s “Shut Down Homan Square” protest was one of several being planned as far away as Los Angeles.


“Hopefully with the presence we expect to have, that will put a little bit of pressure to say, ‘Hey, look – this isn’t going to go away,” he said.

Missouri GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Schewich dies after shooting himself: report

Missouri’s state auditor, Tom Schweich, a Republican candidate for governor, died on Thursday, Governor Jay Nixon said in a statement.

Schweich, 54, had been reelected in November.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported, citing an unnamed police source, that Schweich had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home. This report could not be confirmed immediately.


Schweich was “a brilliant, devoted and accomplished public servant who dedicated his career to making Missouri and the world a better place,” Nixon said in a statement.

Another shoe drops: Bill O’Reilly’s ex-colleagues call his L.A. riot stories ‘completely ficticious’

Fox News host, whose stories of past reporting exploits are under renewed scrutiny, claimed ‘we were attacked by protesters’ when covering the 1992 riots

Former colleagues of Bill O’Reilly, the Fox News host whose tales of past reporting exploits are facing renewed scrutiny, have disputed his account of surviving a bombardment of bricks and rocks while covering the 1992 riots in Los Angeles.

Six people who covered the riots with O’Reilly in California for Inside Edition told the Guardian they did not recall an incident in which, as O’Reilly has claimed, “concrete was raining down on us” and “we were attacked by protesters”.


Several members of the team suggested that O’Reilly may instead be overstating a fracas involving one disgruntled Los Angeles resident, who smashed one of their cameras with a piece of rubble.

9 Months On, Koch Fears Realized After Town Raised Minimum Wage To $15

In January, the town of Seatac, Washington, put in to effect a new $15 per hour Minimum Wage. No ramp ups, no tiered implementation. One day it was the state standard, the next, the highest minimum wage in the nation. The Koch Brothers sank a fortune to fight this measure, which fell on deaf ears as the town rejected their trickle-down theories and instead voted for the measure. The result is that for one town, they became a test bed, to put the theories behind trickle-down economics to the test.

Now, nine months on, we are witnessing one of the most dramatic recoveries in the Pacific Northwest.

Last July, business owner Scott Ostrander claimed that the increased wage would force him to lay off staff, if not shut down his businesses.

I am shaking here tonight because I am going to be forced to lay people off. I’m going to take away their livelihood. That hurts. It really, really hurts. . . . And what I am going to have to do on Jan. 1 is to eliminate jobs, reduce hours — and as soon as hours are reduced, benefits are reduced.

Instead, his business, the Cedarbrook Lodge hotel, is expanding, adding 63 more beds to meet demand. Instead of layoffs, he needs to hire more people. And his story is not the only one.

It’s not just sea level rise — the East Coast is sinking, too

The New York Times has a frightening overview of the latest science on sea level rise — specifically, the threat it poses to the United States. The consensus is that, yes, the U.S. is at risk; the East Coast in particular. But surprisingly, it’s not just rising tides that we have to watch out for — it’s sinking land. From the Times:

And that goes back to the last ice age, which peaked some 20,000 years ago.

As a massive ice sheet, more than a mile thick, grew over what are now Canada and the northern reaches of the United States, the weight of it depressed the crust of the earth. Areas away from the ice sheet bulged upward in response, as though somebody had stepped on one edge of a balloon, causing the other side to pop up. Now that the ice sheet has melted, the ground that was directly beneath it is rising, and the peripheral bulge is falling.]

Some degree of sinking is going on all the way from southern Maine to northern Florida, and it manifests itself as an apparent rising of the sea.

Miami, other cities in Florida, USA slowly sinking into rising sea

There have been no rainstorms and no burst water pipes, but Alton Road, one of the main avenues on touristy Miami Beach, is flooded again. Shop owners use sandbags and barriers to keep the water surging from the sewers from entering their venues.

Passersby take their shoes off to wade through puddles. The street, just a few blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, is “Ground Zero” when it comes to the disturbing rising sea levels in Miami and much of southern Florida.

Alton Road is barely 85 centimetres above sea level. Work to install water pumping stations at a cost of 32 million dollars is expected to be complete by year’s end. The intention is to cope with the problem that is also affecting millions of inhabitants and properties in the low, marshy lands in southern Florida, a tourist paradise threatened by climate change.

A federal assessment in May identified Miami as one of the cities most vulnerable to climate change.
