turbinetree's JournalSenate passes bill for 9/11 victims, no thanks to Republicans trying to block it
By Dan Desai Martin -
July 23, 2019
Mitch McConnell dragged his feet on the bill, and two Republicans tried to block it, but help finally is on the way for 9/11 first responders.
Almost two weeks after the House passed the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund Bill, the Senate finally followed suit on Tuesday. After defeating amendments by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) Lee's would have limited the amount available for the fund, and Paul's introduced spending cuts to offset the cost of the fund the Senate passed the bill by a vote of of 97-2. Lee and Paul voted against the bill.
The bill, if Trump signs it into law, will replenish a fund that pays for the health care costs of first responders who rushed to save people on the day of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Before the bill even came to the Senate for a vote, it was marred in controversy as Republicans like Paul and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell seemed reluctant to see the bill pass.
In June, McConnell admitted the bill wasn't even on his agenda.

Paul's objection sparked outrage among 9/11 first responders. John Feal, a demolition expert who was injured responding to the attacks, called Paul and Lee "assholes" for their efforts to block the bill. (Lee used a procedural tactic to prevent the bill from passing earlier.)
"They're hypocrites at best," Feal told CNN's "New Day" the day after Paul blocked the bill. "They're bottom feeders. They're opportunists."
"They should be begging for forgiveness for being assholes" and opposing the bill, he added.
Despite Republican obstruction tactics, the bill finally passed both the House and Senate and now heads to Trump for his signature.

Mail Bomber's Trump Obsession Contributed To Radicalization, Lawyers Say
By Josh Kovensky

The man who mailed pipe bombs to prominent Democrats and supporters of liberal causes before the 2018 midterms is a steroid-addicted sexual abuse survivor who found light in Donald J. Trump, federal defenders representing him say.
Attorneys for Cesar A. Sayoc are trying to convince a Manhattan federal judge to sentence the attempted bomber to 10 years 1 month behind bars, plus supervision with combined mental health and substance abuse treatment. They argue that Sayocs mental health issues and obsession with President Trump contributed to his radicalization and decision to send the bombs.
Sayoc caused panic across the country the month before the 2018 midterms by mailing crude pipe bombs to critics of President Trump, top Democrats, and CNN. Prosecutors are demanding that he spend life behind bars for his crimes.
In a 39-page sentencing memorandum, Sayocs attorneys laid out a detailed narrative of his radicalization. Sayoc went from being a steroid-addled pariah relying on self-help audiobooks and strip mall fortune-tellers to a political radical who saw it as his mission to protect Trump and the country by attacking prominent liberals across the country, according to the sentencing memo.

Does This 'Fox & Friends' Host Know McDonald's Workers Don't Earn Tips?
By Summer Concepcion
July 23, 2019 1:14 pm
Raising the minimum wage is a super-sized nothingburger to the Fox & Friends hosts.
While tearing into the Houses recently passed bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour and criticizing Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for supporting a $20 minimum wage, co-host Brian Kilmeade ranted about how raising the minimum wage would destroy small businesses by encouraging people to make low-paying jobs into a career.
If your one job doesnt pay enough, guess what you do, you get another job. Thats what you do in your 20s, Kilmeade said. Having two jobs, part-time jobs, while going to school is something people have done since the turn of the last century.
Co-host Ainsley Earhardt then piggybacked off of Kilmeades argument of how a minimum wage job such as waiting tables is not meant to be a career before going off on a tangent about tipping at places like McDonalds where employees do not earn tips.

And this person sits on a white couch everyday in front of cameras, making millions and talking about her experiences of going into a McDonald's, and I just wonder if and when she goes into a McDonald's with all of here richness and her kids, does she give that person a tip, and then look at her kids and say one day you also can work at McDonald's..............................give me fucking break............................
GOP congressman: 'Majority' of Republicans don't want to be defined by Trump supporters
By
Oliver Willis -
July 23, 2019
Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) voted against a House resolution condemning Trump's racist smear of four congresswomen of color.
Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) insisted on Tuesday that Republicans "do not want to be defined" by the racist chants at Trump's recent rally.
Trump supporters yelled "Send her back!" about Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), an American citizen. Trump later praised the chanters as "incredible patriots."
Trump kicked off the entire racist episode by calling for Omar and three other Democratic congresswomen of color to "get out" of the country.
Walker was asked about his criticism of the chants, which he previously characterized as a "dagger that went through my heart," during an interview with CNN.

Trump: Constitution gives me 'the right to do whatever I want as president'
By
Kaili Joy Gray -
July 23, 2019
That is not what the Constitution says.
Trump gave an hour-long speech Tuesday to Turning Point USA, an organization of conservative teens who support Trump, in which he revived some of his favorite talking points and even offered a few new ones.
He relived his 2016 electoral victory, he repeated his smears on the four Democratic members of Congress he's been attacking for more than a week, and he claimed the Constitution allows him the power to do whatever he wants.
"Then I have an Article II, where I have the right to do whatever I want as president," he claimed to the crowd of MAGA-capped fans. "But I don't even talk about that."
It should go without saying that no part of the Constitution grants the president of the United States the right to do whatever he wants. Article II does, however, state that the president "shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors."

Congress prepares for 'reticent' witness Robert Mueller
By benjamin siegel and katherine faulders

Facing pointed questions about a hot-button government investigation in June 2013, then-FBI Director Robert Mueller didn't budge.
"I'm not going to speculate," he flatly told Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, when pressed on the details of a probe into an Internal Revenue Service targeting scandal.
On Wednesday, Mueller will return to Capitol Hill to face questions about his investigation into Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. Republicans and Democrats, who have spent hours preparing for Mueller's appearance with prep sessions and mock hearings with committee staffers playing the role of Mueller, don't expect him to be any more forthcoming.
"He is a reticent witness even under the best of circumstances," House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said at the Aspen Security Forum, held in Colorado last week.
"[Mueller] never gives a 10-word answer when a one word answer will do," one senior Democratic aide said. "He does not volunteer information."

Just an added note of a florist and the four Congressional Woman being attacked...............
D.C. Florist Sends A Message Of Support To Congresswomen Targeted In Trumps Tweets
A D.C. florist is sending encouragement in the form of fresh flowers to the four U.S. Congresswomen targeted in President Donald Trumps incendiary tweets this week.
Alisa Rabinovich, who owns and operates Nosegay Flowers in D.C. and Galleria Florist in Falls Church, Virginia, said she designed custom flower arrangements to send to Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts), Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), and Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) to show the women support.
Its really not about politics for me, Alisa Rabinovich said in a statement sent to WAMU. Im not a terribly political person. Its about these women being bullied by the President of the United States, the most powerful man in the world, and standing up for themselves.
She delivered the flowers on Thursday with a note thanking the Congresswomen.

Rabinovich immigrated to the U.S. with her family as a child from Russia. She said she identified with the four Congresswomen who received Trumps taunts.
I love America, and one of the things I love most about my home is that people here have been able to have civil disagreements, and also look for ways to come together for the common good, she said. That seems to be lost on the President sometimes.

Hong Kong arrests men with gang links over mob attack
today
HONG KONG (AP) Hong Kong police say theyve arrested six men, some with links to triad gangs, following a violent attack on pro-democracy protesters at a subway station over the weekend that saw dozens injured.
Senior police official Chan Tin-chu said the men, aged 24-54, were held for unlawful assembly and are being investigated for taking part in the attack late Sunday night. Some of them are villagers, and their occupations range from drivers and hawkers to renovation workers, he said.
Some of them have triad backgrounds, he said. I believe that more ... will be detained soon. Police will not condone any form of violence.
Police are still investigating the motive for the attack, Chan said, without providing further details on the alleged links to the triads, which refer to powerful organized crime syndicates in Hong Kong. The triads control certain neighborhoods in the city and are believed to have strong political influence.

San Juan (Reuters) - San Juan braced on Tuesday for an 11th day of protests calling for the resignation of Puerto Ricos governor over offensive chat messages that have drawn hundreds of thousands of people.
Police fired tear gas to disperse crowds late Monday and early Tuesday while protesters threw bottles and other objects at police, multiple media reports said.
Governor Ricardo Rosselló has insisted he will not step down as leader of the U.S. Territory over misogynistic and homophobic messages exchanged between him and top aides, but said on Sunday that he would not seek re-election next year.
Rosselló also said he would step down as head of the New Progressive Party and asked Puerto Ricans to give him another chance.

Want to Meet With the Trump Administration? Donald Trump Jr.'s Hunting Buddy Can Help
Tommy Hicks Jr. isnt in government, but hes a longtime pal of the presidents son. That has put him in the room when the administration talks China and 5G policy, and it lets him help others including one friend who had $143 million riding on the outcome.
by Jake Pearson July 22, 4 a.m. EDT
Over the past two years, the Trump administration has been grappling with how to handle the transition to the next generation of mobile broadband technology. With spending expected to run into hundreds of billions of dollars, the administration views it as an ultra-high-stakes competition between U.S. and Chinese companies, with enormous implications both for technology and for national security. Top officials from a raft of departments have been meeting to hash out the best approach.
But theres been one person at some of the discussions who has a different background: Hes Donald Trump Jr.s hunting buddy. Over the past two decades, the two have trained their sights on duck, pheasant and white-tailed deer on multiple continents. (An email from another Trump Jr. pal characterized one of their joint duck-hunting trips to Mexico years ago as muy aggresivo.)
Tommy Hicks Jr., 41, isnt a government official; hes a wealthy private investor. And he has been a part of discussions related to China and technology with top officials from the Treasury Department, National Security Council, Commerce Department and others, according to emails and documents obtained by ProPublica. In one email, Hicks refers to a meeting at Langley, an apparent reference to the CIAs headquarters.
Hicks financial interests, if any, in the matters he has discussed arent clear. The interests are much more apparent when it comes to at least one of his associates. Hicks used his connections to arrange for a hedge fund manager friend, Kyle Bass who has $143 million in investments that will pay off if Chinas economy tanks to present his views on the Chinese economy to high-level government officials at an interagency meeting at the Treasury Department, according to the documents.
