Supreme Court may allow religious right to undermine First Amendment

Written by Alex Henderson December 11, 2025 | 02:25PM ET

When the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment was adopted in 1791, the Founding Fathers were clear about two things: (1) freedom of religion would a Constitutional right, and (2) government would not favor one religion over another. The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

The First Amendment is at the heart of Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board v. Drummond, a case that finds the Religious Right at odds with a combination of liberals, progressives, and right-wing libertarians.

At issue in the case is whether or not religious charter schools can, under the Constitution, receive taxpayer dollars. The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled "no," but when the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2025, it was a 4-4 split decision. Right-wing Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a Donald Trump appointee, could have been a tie-breaking vote but recused herself.

Senators Demand Trump Admin Come Clean on Plan to 'Quietly Kill' Social Security Offices

The lawmakers accused the Social Security Administration of “a slash-first, think-later approach,” for which “beneficiaries will pay the price.”
By Brett Wilkins
Published Dec 11, 2025

Leading Senate Democrats and Independent US Sen. Bernie Sanders this week pressed the Trump administration for answers following reports that the Social Security Administration is planning to dramatically reduce visits to its field offices.

“We write with concerns regarding recent reports that the Social Security Administration is reorganizing its field office operations, and has established a goal of cutting the number of field office visits in half—amounting to 15 million fewer visits annually,” Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Sanders (I-Vt.) wrote in a letter to SSA Administrator Frank Bisignano.

“Given that beneficiaries are already waiting months for field office appointments, and the agency has not shared with Congress or the public on how it plans to achieve this goal, we are concerned that these efforts are in fact part of a plan to ‘quietly kill field offices,’ implementing a backdoor cut in benefits by making it harder for Americans to access the Social Security customer services they need,” the senators said.

'Please do not believe Trump': Students in 'chaos' as president spreads false shooter info

By David McAfee
Published December 13, 2025 6:36 PM ET

Donald Trump on Saturday was forced to issue a correction for his own public statement after the president falsely reported information about an active shooter, but the damage may have already been done, according to numerous observers.

An active shooter was reported this weekend at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and news outlets suggested there are multiple victims. CNN also reported the news, publishing an article called, "No suspect in custody after reports of a shooting at Brown University, officials say."

CNN and MS NOW both reported that no suspect was in custody, despite there being an initial report of an arrest, but Trump posted outdated information on his Truth Social account suggesting there was someone in custody.

Jared Kushner is at the center of Trump's corruption

From media mergers to foreign policy, Trump's son-in-law is consolidating power — and making millions

By Sophia Tesfaye, 9 hours ago

The speed and scale of Jared Kushner’s re-emergence can’t be overstated. In the first year of Donald Trump’s second presidency, his son-in-law is casually consolidating economic and political power with staggering speed. Kushner has positioned himself at the center of the biggest media merger in years and at the fulcrum of White House foreign policy, all while taking in multi-billion-dollar investments from autocratic governments.

On Monday, Paramount Skydance — run by David Ellison, a billionaire Trump has openly urged to reshape the news industry in his favor — launched an unprecedented bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery by initiating a hostile takeover after losing an earlier bidding contest to Netflix. Paramount’s offer draws heavily from Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners, and from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. These Middle Eastern autocracies are principal investors in an acquisition that would give them — and Kushner — influence over some of America’s most powerful news and cultural engines: CNN, HBO, Warner Bros. Pictures and the vast library of Warner content that shapes the national (and international) imagination. The partnership is unprecedented. Not even Rupert Murdoch’s right-wing media empire was capitalized by foreign monarchies seeking political leverage.

After leaving the first Trump administration, Kushner raised over $3 billion for Affinity Partners, including $2 billion from the Saudi government’s Public Investment Fund. The Saudis’ own advisers reportedly warned Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that Kushner’s record did not justify such an investment, but the crown prince overruled them. The UAE and Qatar soon followed, adding another $1.5 billion to the pot. As of late 2024, Kushner had still not produced meaningful returns for these foreign governments, yet he had paid himself at least $157 million in fees. Forbes now calls him a billionaire.

Opinion Trump has ripped up two centuries of history -- thanks to one man

Written by The Conversation | December 08, 2025 | 06:13 AM ET

When the framers of what became the U.S. Constitution set out to draft the rules of our government on a hot, humid day in the summer of 1787, debates over details raged on.

But one thing the men agreed on was the power of a new, representative legislative branch. Article I – the first one, after all – details the awesome responsibilities of the House of Representatives and the Senate: power to levy taxes, fund the government, declare war, impeach justices and presidents, and approve treaties, among many, many others.

In comparison, Article II, detailing the responsibilities of the president, and Article III, detailing the Supreme Court, are rather brief – further deferring to the preferred branch, Congress, for actual policymaking.

This 'craven' act could let GOP keep House majority even if Dems sweep midterms: analysis

By Ewan Gleadow
Published December 8, 2025 9:08 AM ET

A former Democrat representative has highlighted how one "craven" act would let the GOP hold onto their House majority — even if they lose the midterms.

Donald Trump could act on a "craven, but shockingly constitutional" clause should the House flip to a Democrat majority after next year's elections. Steve Israel, writing in The New Republic, confirmed there could be cause for the president to hold a majority through a "possible hijacking" that courts would struggle to reverse.

The ex-Dem rep wrote, "I’d always assumed that seat was bestowed to me by a majority of voters in my Long Island district. Turns out I was wrong. That simple language—tucked into Article 1, Section 5—might be a mechanism for Donald Trump and his congressional acolytes to maintain their House majority after the 2026 midterm elections, even if it’s clear the Democrats have flipped the House."

If you think they will not do this lets just ask the newly seating representative from Arizona ...............Adelita Grijalva

Supreme Court on verge of using flawed theory to grant Trump unprecedented power: expert

By Travis Gettys
Published December 8, 2025 9:17 AM ET

The Supreme Court is poised to hear Trump v. Slaughter, a case that could fundamentally reshape the balance of power between the presidency and Congress.

At issue is whether President Donald Trump can fire the heads of independent federal agencies at will — a power the Constitution does not explicitly grant and which the Supreme Court unanimously rejected nearly a century ago, wrote New York Times columnist Kate Shaw, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

"Today’s Republican-appointed justices appear to be firmly under the sway of an a textual and a historic theory — the unitary executive theory — that demands complete presidential control over essentially every government agency and insists that the power to fire agency heads at will is an indispensable part of such control," Shaw wrote.

Leaked memo shows Trump DOJ wants list of groups that express 'anti-American sentiment'

By Brad Reed
Published December 7, 2025 8:25 AM ET

A leaked memo written by US Attorney General Pam Bondi directs the Department of Justice to compile a list of potential “domestic terrorism” organizations that espouse “extreme viewpoints on immigration, radical gender ideology, and anti-American sentiment.”

The memo, which was obtained by journalist Ken Klippenstein, expands upon National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 (NSPM-7), a directive signed by President Donald Trump in late September that demanded a “national strategy to investigate and disrupt networks, entities, and organizations that foment political violence so that law enforcement can intervene in criminal conspiracies before they result in violent political acts.”

The new Bondi memo instructs law enforcement agencies to refer “suspected” domestic terrorism cases to the Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs), which will then undertake an “exhaustive investigation contemplated by NSPM-7” that will incorporate “a focused strategy to root out all culpable participants—including organizers and funders—in all domestic terrorism activities.”
