Populist Victories Won In This Conservative Colorado Town

Reprinted with permission from Creators.

What’s been happening politically and culturally this year in Colorado’s second largest city is inspiring. Progressive/populist organizing to build grassroots movements to counter plutocratic rule and govern in the people’s interest now have a model of success in one of the least likely places.

Since the 1990s, Colorado Springs has been shaped by an inordinate number of right-wing institutions. Yet, the Springs also is home to a hardy band of progressives, including environmentalists, unionists, women’s champions, scrappy entrepreneurs, LGBTQ activists, students and teachers, a sizeable immigrant population, social justice church groups and some sensible libertarians.

With Bernie Sanders bringing new, highly energized voters into play, young people who had previously evinced zero interest in the old Democratic-Republican duopoly were rallying behind Bernie’s grassroots populism. His revolutionary call to rein in America’s corporate oligarchs also sparked a fire in older, working-class people, including Repubs and none-of-the-above folks who’d given up on the idea that either party gave a damn about people like them. A shift was occurring in Colorado Springs’ political zeitgeist — one that might open a path for new alignments and a progressive-populist movement.

Key senator will evaluate Trumpcare with administrations cooked analysis

Source: Think Progress

A key Republican senator, who is likely to decide the fate of her party’s latest effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act and phase-out Medicaid, says she will rely on a Trump administration office with a history of producing cooked figures in order to determine whether to back the bill.

Earlier this week, the Congressional Budget Office announced that, due to the rushed process Senate Republicans are using to try to pass the latest version of Trumpcare, it will not be able to fully evaluate the bill until after a vote is expected next week. That leaves senators flying blind, without the office’s guidance on crucial questions like how many people will lose coverage under the bill, or how the legislation will impact insurance premiums.

Outside estimates show that at least 32 million people will lose health insurance by 2027 if the latest Trumpcare bill becomes law.

Lets be clear here, she more than likely will be out of office collecting a taxpayer funded retirement program, this bill has not had a full CBO scored before they vote..................this is outrageous and is BS,to wait for that score, she can ask for "regular order", that is her job .

Jake LaMotta, former boxer whose life was subject of Raging Bull, dies aged 95

Source: The Guardian

Jake LaMotta, the Bronx boxer who captured the world middleweight championship in 1949 and whose turbulent life was later the subject of the 1980 film Raging Bull, died on Tuesday because of complications from pneumonia. He was 95.

LaMotta’s longtime fiancée, Denise Baker, said the longtime professional boxer died on Tuesday at Palm Garden of Aventura nursing home in Florida.

“He had eyes that danced, all the way to the very end,” Baker told the Guardian. “I used to tell him if he was a Native American, they would have called him Eyes That Danced. He had the sharpest, most moving eyes.”

Born Giacobbe LaMotta in 1921 on the lower east side of Manhattan, he learned to box at the Coxsackie Reformatory for delinquent youths after being convicted of attempted burglary as a teenager. He went undefeated as an amateur upon release and entered the professional ranks aged 19 in 1941.

Michigan will allow candidates to raise money for super PACs

Source: The Hill

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) has signed new legislation that will allow candidates running for state office to raise unlimited money for outside political groups, an expansion of campaign finance law likely to be seen in other states in the future.

The measure, which cleared the Republican-dominated legislature on Tuesday, goes further than federal election rules. Under those federal rules, a candidate can raise contributions of up to $5,000 for super PACs.

The Michigan law allows candidates to raise unlimited contributions, both from individuals and from corporations, on behalf of so-called “independent expenditure committees,” the state equivalent of super PACs. Those committees could then spend freely on advertisements directly targeting any race.

Snyder, in a statement, said the new law clarifies the Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling in the case of Citizens United v. FEC, a decision that paved the way for the creation of super PACs. The bill he signed codifies that ruling on a state level, his office said.

Lewandowski Wants A Life Sentence For Anyone Who Improperly Swayed Election

By MATT SHUHAM Published SEPTEMBER 20, 2017 4:35 PM

President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager said Tuesday that he hoped any of Trump’s campaign staff who may be found to have improperly influenced the 2016 election “go to jail for the rest of their lives.”

Lewandowski made the comment at an event at George Washington University, the Washington Examiner reported.

“I think if anybody, and I’ve said this, if Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, or Rick Gates or Carter Page, or anybody else attempted to influence the outcome of the U.S. election through any means that’s inappropriate — through collusion, coordination, or cooperation — I hope they go to jail for the rest of their lives,” Lewandowsi said, as quoted by the Examiner.

Lewandowski is a well-known rival of Manafort’s, who replaced him at the top of Trump’s campaign with the title of chairman. Eventually, Manafort was himself replaced by Breitbart News executive Steve Bannon and pollster Kellyanne Conway, who would both go on to accompany Trump to the White House.

Senate GOP Embraces FUBAR Process For Last-Ditch Obamacare Repeal Effort

Cameron Joseph contributed reporting.

The Senate has less than two weeks, and just a handful of working days, to repeal Obamacare and block-grant Medicaid with a mere 50 votes.

“This vehicle that we’re using turns into a pumpkin on September 30th if we don’t get something else done,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) warned Tuesday.

With the clock ticking, Senate Republicans have thrown together a crude imitation of regular order in an attempt to quickly check all the necessary boxes and win over their colleagues who are sticklers for process. Next week, they plan to plow through a single hearing, receive an incomplete analysis from the Congressional Budget Office, and if they shore up the votes, take it to the Senate floor for a whopping 90 seconds of debate before launching into a vote-a-rama.

Some Republican lawmakers are less than pleased.

“That’s problematic because that is part of the problem of short-circuiting the process,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) complained, lamenting that the last-minute repeal effort is having the side effect of killing the bipartisan health care stabilization bill she and others have spent months negotiating.

Ryan Zinke ignores what outdoors community actually wants, pays tribute with Big Buck Hunter instead

To a cynic, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s murky proposal to open millions of acres of protected wilderness to mining companies who stash their profits abroad may seem likely to endanger Americans’ ability to marvel at the raw, untrammeled country of the west.

But fear not. Zinke has a rock-solid plan to maintain Interior’s connection to nature and preserve access to the unique mix of trepidation and bliss that inspired people like Margaret Murie and John Muir.

He’s put a Big Buck Hunter game console in the employee cafeteria at Interior Department headquarters.

AT&T CEO: Failure to pass tax reform would be 'bad indictment' for GOP

Source: The Hill

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said Wednesday that if Republicans cant enact tax reform while controlling both chambers of Congress and the White House it would be a "bad indictment" of their effectiveness.

I absolutely believe, and I think youre beginning to understand, that the people in the Senate and Congress believe that if they dont get tax reform done, it may be political survival for them, Stephenson said at an event hosted by the Business Roundtable.

Stephenson added that if youre a Republican, you better have it done before the primary season begins.

Stephenson was one of several business leaders who pressed for tax reform at the event Wednesday. Several of the CEOs said that taxes should be a bipartisan issue and that both sides of the aisle see a need to overhaul the code.
