A Chinese court has deferred its verdict after the closed-door national security trial of the Australian journalist Cheng Lei lasted less than a day.
Foreign journalists and diplomats, including Australia’s ambassador, were denied entry to the courtroom on Thursday as Cheng, a former anchor for the Chinese state TV broadcaster CGTN, faced trial on charges of “illegally supplying state secrets overseas”.
The Australian foreign minister, Marise Payne, confirmed that the court had deferred its verdict, adding: “The Australian government respects the sovereignty of China’s legal system. However, Ms Cheng’s case has lacked transparency and the Australian government has never been provided with details of the charges.”

Paris climate agreement goals will fail unless the rights of Indigenous people who protect rainforests are honoured, according to a new report.
Forest lands stewarded by Indigenous people and communities in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Peru sequester about twice as much carbon as other lands, according to the analysis.
To meet national climate goals – known as NDCs – without protecting this land would require draconian and abrupt lifestyle changes in forested countries.

The Pennsylvania Senate committee that’s investigating the 2020 general and 2021 primary elections saw a walkout from Democratic members after its Republican chairperson refused to swear in a conservative panel during its first public meeting since last September.
“The Democrats will not participate in a kangaroo operation that is set up with no bipartisanship conversation beforehand, as is the case of all of the hearings that we do in this body,” Sen. Vincent Hughes, D-Philadelphia, shouted as the Senate Intergovernmental Operations Committee sat at ease Thursday.
Sen. Cris Dush, R-Jefferson, who chairs the Republican-controlled panel, briefly suspended the hearing — publicly advertised as a meeting on ballot drop boxes — after Hughes directed a line of questions to Lehigh County Republican Committee Chairperson Joseph Vichot about a video showing an individual placing a handful of papers into a drop box in Lehigh County.

In a 288-page document, District Court Judge Mark Walker blocked the Florida voter suppression bill and specifically called out judges and the Supreme Court for undercutting the Voting Rights Act. Mark Joseph Stern, Slate's court and law writer, cited several excerpts in the judge's decision that make the decision groundbreaking. Until the case goes to the Supreme Court, Florida's suppression laws will be stopped.
Republicans around the country have been pushing voter suppression laws after former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election after a record-setting voter turnout. In Texas, for example, Republicans confessed that the law they passed putting additional barriers on vote by mail wasn't due to an outbreak of voter fraud. Instead, it was to make people feel better.
"This is a preventative measure for us," Republican state Rep. Travis Clardy said. "I think it is our job to make sure that doesn't blossom into a problem that disturbs the underlying and one of the underpinnings of our democracy, and that is confidence in our elections."

As the Cyber Ninjas face millions in fines for hiding public documents about the controversial audit of Maricopa County, Republicans in another state are now also facing fines for the same alleged offense.
"A judge found Assembly Speaker Robin Vos in contempt of court Wednesday for failing to release documents related to a Republican-run review of the 2020 election," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday. "Dane County Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn determined the Rochester Republican and the Assembly as a whole adopted 'a collective and abject disregard for the court’s order' from four months ago to turn over documents sought by the liberal group American Oversight under the state's open records law. She ordered Vos and the Assembly to turn over records within 14 days and to each pay $1,000 per day if they fail to do that."
In Arizona, the Cyber Ninjas are being fined $50,000 a day.

On Tuesday's edition of CNN's "The Lead," anchor Jake Tapper discussed former President Donald Trump's call for Vladimir Putin to release dirt on Hunter Biden with former federal prosecutor Preet Bharara.
"Just to be clear what he is talking about, a Senate report showed that a Russian oligarch and then wife of Moscow's mayor gave $3.5 million a decade ago to a company that Hunter Biden says he had no affiliation with," said Tapper. "But more broadly, what do you make of this? Here is Trump asking an adversary of the United States, fully engaged in attack on an ally now, Ukraine, to give information to damage the president of the United States and his son. This is exactly what he was impeached but not convicted for."
"I think of it what any normal person of reason would think of it," said Bharara. "A person that acts crazy sometimes, trying to deflect attention from himself because there's a lot of attention. 7 hours 37 minutes of logs missing. They're beginning to prove and make the case he was involved at a more significant way than previously known. You have a judge in the last couple days who in parallel proceeding made a point there's evidence that Donald Trump and others conspired to violate criminal law, meaning certain documents have to be released on the crime-fraud exception. This is what he does. The fact he is doing it now with a country who is at war in Ukraine, an ally, indiscriminately bombing and killing innocent people and children is, I think, something of a new level.

The Texas Republican said it's a 'bad development' that the public is paying attention to Thomas, a GOP operative who attended the Jan. 6, 2021, 'Stop the Steal' rally.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is defending Ginni Thomas, the conservative political operative and wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, as she comes under fire for her role in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
On Monday, Cornyn told The Hill that the decision should be up to Thomas as to whether he should recuse himself from cases that could relate to his wife's efforts to cancel President Joe Biden's victory over Donald Trump.
"I just think this is a bad development where now public officials' families are now the target of all this press," the Texas Republican told the outlet, adding that government officials "don't volunteer to have our families dragged through the mud.
