Born in Chicago and raised in Danville, California, Bassler was intellectually curious from a young age, as she enjoyed solving various logic puzzles. Bassler began her career in science "as a veterinarian’s assistant at the Miami Zoo and later at a local dog and cat clinic." Bassler received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of California, Davis. Despite her entry as a major in veterinary sciences, she preferred to focus on genetics and biochemistry. She stated that these subjects allowed her the "gateway to solving biological puzzles." She began to work for UC Davis biochemistry and molecular medicine professor Frederic Troy. Troy's research focuses included bacterial carbohydrates and the relationship between the Epstein-Barr virus and cancer. At the time, the cancer project appealed to Bassler more than the research on bacteria, but Troy assigned her to the bacteria research project. Within this project, Bassler characterized an enzyme in E. coli which cleaved sugars from various membrane glycoproteins. Eventually, Bassler admired working with prokaryotes as she stated that "they're the perfect creatures to work on."
Following her undergraduate research, Bassler received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Johns Hopkins University. She achieved key insights into the mechanism by which bacteria communicate, known as quorum sensing. Her postdoctoral research was conducted at Agouron Institute in genetics for four years. Here, she studied glow-in-the-dark bacteria that cause the oceanic light show. She used her previous knowledge and research to demonstrate that when there were enough cohorts to make effort, bacteria gave off light. In 1994, Bassler joined the Princeton faculty. She is currently the chair of the department of molecular biology and the Squibb Professor in molecular biology. Following her postdoctoral research, the MacArthur Foundation awarded Bassler its fellowship in 2002, which recognized her for her immense contributions to the bacterial lexicon.

This triggered a get-rich-quick idea: Sell our liberal tears in little jars to Republicans....
for $1,000 per milliliter. They're stupid enough to believe they trigger and "own" us which if true would make us cry. Why not sell them tiny little glass jars of saline for a grand a pop so they can show Rethug friends a trophy of their "wins"?
We could spice it up a little and offer male or female tears in a choice of glass colors and styles.
A high-dollar members only section could offer Hillary and Barack tears for $100,000 per jar, sealed with gold foil tape....

Nance, in reality all that you cited leads back to those who fund the Republican Party...
and they mostly remain hidden behind a very thick curtain out of public view.
All these miscreant Rethug politicians (including tRump) and their minion voter base are just window dressing distractions from the core of our problem: big money's control and influence on our political systems.
Without those huge sums corporations and those of high wealth have invested in think tanks, public and social media and our elections, the Republican Party would have long ago been relegated to the margins of our news cycles (like Bob Dole's clockwork rituals in the '60s before news cameras to bitch about taxes).
We're living in a warped form of fascism call plutocracy that I fear is very fragile.
Let us endeavor to pull back and destroy that curtain of concealment.......

Gov. Beshear Provides Update on Severe Weather
Freezing temperatures, snow expected for many impacted areas tonight; four tornadoes confirmed so far.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 2, 2022) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear said the state is continuing to respond to a severe weather system that impacted much of Western, Eastern and South Central Kentucky Saturday and is preparing for winter weather to arrive tonight.
The weather event generated heavy rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail and strong straight-line winds and caused flash flooding, loss of power and damage to public infrastructure and private properties.
The Governor urged Kentuckians to monitor the weather as snow and freezing temperatures are forecast for many of the affected areas this evening.
“We are urging Kentuckians in impacted areas to please stay off the roads as much as possible tonight,” Gov. Beshear said. “Cold temperatures and the possibility of snowfall, combined with wet roads and standing water, are expected to create even more hazardous road conditions.”
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is preparing snowplow trucks and working with Kentucky Emergency Management to monitor conditions.
Updates:
The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed four tornadoes so far:
Bowling Green, Warren County, EF-0, 85 mph;
Union City, Madison County, EF-1, 110 mph;
Northwest of Glasgow, Barren County, EF-1, 95 mph; and
Campbellsville, Taylor County, EF-1, 105-110 mph.
At this time, no fatalities or injuries have been confirmed.
NWS is still conducting tornado surveys in Warren, Barren, Hart, Marion, Taylor, Madison and Christian counties.
A possible tornado touched down in Hopkinsville, Christian County. Numerous buildings were damaged on the east side of the city, on 13th and 14th streets.
A possible tornado touched down six miles southwest of Russellville in Logan County. Damage assessment indicates damage to several outbuildings.
A possible tornado touched down in Marion County at 135 Wendy Lane, damaging a barn.
Possible tornado touchdowns in Green and Metcalfe counties caused damage to several homes.
Local State of Emergency Declarations are in effect in Casey, Clay, Floyd, Madison, Owsley, Pike and Taylor counties.
Electric customer outages have been reported in Pike County, affecting 1,190 customers, and 342 customers have been affected in Floyd County.
Heavy rains caused more than 75 roadway closures throughout the day Saturday, primarily due to flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Thirty-two roads remain closed.
At least seven landslides have been reported as well as washouts. One bridge embankment was destroyed in Owsley County.
The State Emergency Operations Center remains activated with personnel from the Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Kentucky State Police and Kentucky Department for Public Health.
Based on preliminary data, 31 counties were impacted in some way by the weather event. Those counties are Adair, Barren, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Casey, Christian, Clay, Floyd, Graves, Green, Hart, Hopkins, Jackson, Knott, Lee, Logan, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Mason, Metcalfe, Monroe, Nicholas, Owsley, Pike, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Simpson, Taylor and Warren.
The Governor will travel to Hopkinsville tomorrow to assess damage, as well as to Graves and Hopkins counties to check on rebuilding efforts following the deadly Dec. 10 tornadoes. Details regarding media availability in Western Kentucky tomorrow are forthcoming.

I fear the Scientific Method and rational debate are endangered species.
Let's hope the internet and our drift away from solid, old-fashioned core education does not allow humanity to devolve and lose our instinctive, innocent curiosity of things and desire to learn about everything.
Our instinct to play and experiment to learn throughout our lives is instinctive in both humans and animals and it requires constant face-to-face exposure to other humans and Mother Nature, not face-to-screen with a cell phone, tablet or computer.
What we're losing is our innate craving to learn, our ability to think and create independently and rationally as well as our sense of the need for human community.
My father's biggest problem with me as a child was my borrowing his tools to disassemble everything in our house just to see how they were made and to understand how stuff works. I'm not seeing that level of curiosity in our youth much these days.
About all I get these days for my old-fashioned thinking, curiosity and thoroughness is resentment. Even as an engineer (retired), I fear the direction the internet and consumerism is taking us.
