As Cheney files for reelection, poll from rival group shows her trailing badly

OP Rep. Liz Cheney is down 30 points in a new survey of her August primary conducted by the Club for Growth, which is opposing the embattled incumbent.

The poll, which provides perhaps the starkest illustration yet of the political peril Cheney faces this year, shows Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman garnering 56 percent of the vote to Cheney’s 26 percent in the GOP primary. A third Republican got 12 percent support, and just 6 percent are undecided.

Hageman was recruited and endorsed by former President Donald Trump in response to Cheney’s vote to impeach him last year alongside nine other House Republicans.

The race for Wyoming’s lone congressional district is one where the Club for Growth and Trump, who have quickly turned from allies to foils, are aligned, though the Club has not formally endorsed Hageman. The poll, shared first with POLITICO, was conducted this week by WPA Intelligence, a Republican firm, ahead of Friday’s candidate filing deadline.

Will Boyd (running for Alabama Senate) is really good

He clinched the Democratic nomination on Tuesday with 64% of the vote, avoiding a runoff. On the Republican side, Mo Books and Katie Britt are in a messy runoff.

Is there any conceivable way that Boyd could win in November, or should I not waste my time donating to him?

Canada supreme court rules life without chance of parole is 'cruel' and illegal

Source: The Guardian

Canada’s supreme court has ruled that life sentences without the chance of parole are both “cruel” and unconstitutional, in a landmark decision that could give more than dozen mass killers who committed “inherently despicable acts” the faint hope of release in the future.

The court unanimously determined on Friday that sentencing killers to lengthy prison terms with little hope of freedom risked bringing the “administration of justice into disrepute”.

The closely watched case centred on the fate of Alexandre Bissonnette, the gunman who killed six worshippers at a mosque in Québec City in 2017, but the court’s decision will possibly have consequences for at least 18 others who are serving multiple life sentences.

In Canada, those serving a life sentence for first-degree murder are eligible to apply for parole at 25 years. But in 2011, the Conservative government gave justices the ability to hand out consecutive sentences, rather than concurrent blocks of 25 years.

Supreme Court allows Biden administration to continue counting the costs of planet-warming emissions

Supreme Court allows Biden administration to continue counting the costs of planet-warming emissions, for now

(CNN)The Supreme Court will allow the Biden administration to continue to use a metric that estimates the real-world cost of the climate crisis while legal challenges play out. The court's order is a loss for Republican-led states that argued in part that the estimates were "speculative."

The justices issued a one-line order and there were no noted dissents.

The metric, known as "the social cost of carbon," uses economic models to assign a cost to planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions to help quantify the economic harm caused by the climate crisis, including sea level rise, more destructive hurricanes, extreme wildfire seasons and flooding.

It is used in federal rules that regulate carbon emissions, or in decisions from the Department of Interior around oil and gas drilling on federal lands.

Rep. Henry Cuellar declares victory against Jessica Cisneros, who doesn't concede

Longtime Laredo congressman Henry Cuellar declared victory late Tuesday night after drawing 177 more votes than progressive challenger Jessica Cisneros in a fiercely contested Democratic primary runoff.

“The votes are in, the margin will hold,” Cuellar tweeted with a statement congratulating Cisneros on a “hard-fought” campaign. “I look forward to working with her, and all Texans of the 28th District, to help move forward and win in November,” he said.

Katie Britt quote after making the Alabama Senate runoff with Mo Brooks:

“It is clear tonight that Alabamians want new blood. They want someone to go to Washington, D.C., and shake it up. It is clear that they want a true Christian conservative Republican who will lead on the America first agenda and doesn’t just talk about it but knows how to actually get something done,” Britt told supporters gathered in Montgomery.

Marjorie Taylor Greene wins GOP nod for 2nd term in Congress

Source: Yahoo! News

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has made a name in Washington pushing hard-right conspiracy theories, easily won her party’s nomination for Congress on Tuesday. The Associated Press called the race just over an hour after polls closed. With 99% of the vote reported, Greene had 69% of the vote.

Voters picked Greene, commonly known by her initials, MTG, over her Republican challengers, including health care executive Jennifer Strahan. Strahan received 17% of the vote on Tuesday.

Greene will face off against a Democratic challenger in the heavily Republican 14th Congressional District, which includes the exurbs of Atlanta and a rural northwest swath of Georgia.

An effort to remove Greene from the ballot for her role in former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, but a state judge determined that Greene’s opponents lacked enough evidence to prove she had “engaged in insurrection.”

Katie Britt, U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks in Alabama Senate runoff

Source: Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate is going to a June runoff between Katie Britt and U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, who overcame losing former President Donald Trump’s endorsement to remain a contender for the GOP nomination.

The candidates are seeking the Senate seat now held by U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, who is retiring. Britt is Shelby’s former chief of staff and the former leader of the Business Council of Alabama. Brooks is a six-term congressman from north Alabama.

The two edged out Mike Durant, a businessman best known as the helicopter pilot shot down and held captive in the events chronicled in “Black Hawk Down,” to advance to a June 21 runoff, which is required when no candidate captures more than 50% of the initial vote.
