Modern day slavery. Authorities rescue man from 40 years of life in a farm shed (UK)

Man admits to enslaving worker and making him live in a garden shed for 40 years with no light or heating

Peter Swailes and the shed where his victim was kept, according to police

The Evening Standard reported that authorities rescued the enslaved man from the shed after an anonymous tip-off.

The authorities found the man, then 58, in a dark shed without lights or a heating source. GLAA officers said the shed was "in complete darkness" when they went to rescue the man.

The enslaved worker, who is now in his 60s, told UK law enforcement he spent his days doing painting and slating work on farms for the two Swailes men for around $13.60 a day.

Officers from the GLAA noted as well that another shed, where the Swailes family dog slept in, was "in a far better state" than the quarters provided for the worker.

The rescued worker is now living in government-supported accommodation, per the GLAA.

A man has admitted exploiting a victim who was "kept as a slave" in a 6ft shed in Cumbria for 40 years, according to police.

Peter Swailes, 56, pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court on Tuesday before his modern slavery trial was due to begin.

dog owner sleeps through his attack on a library guard

A San Francisco Public Library security guard suffered serious injuries and is being treated in the hospital after a violent pit bull attack inside the Main Library on Sunday night, public library officials said.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m., when library patrons observed a dog barking next to its owner "who was seemingly unresponsive at a computer kiosk," the public library said in a statement.

Two guards tried to approach the owner to determine whether to administer Narcan, a medicine used to prevent opioid overdose deaths. The unleashed dog was "exhibiting aggressive behavior" and wouldn't allow them near the man, the library said.

The dog took hold of one of the guards and pushed him to the floor as the other two guards tried to rescue their colleague.

The library said the owner was "largely unresponsive during the attack" until another patron eventually woke him.

"Once alert, he was able to get control of the dog, who he claimed was a service animal," the library said. "The patron was uncooperative and argumentative with staff following the incident."

U.S. faces wave of Omicron deaths in coming weeks, models say

The fast-moving Omicron variant may cause less severe disease than its predecessors, but COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. are climbing and modelers forecast 50,000 to 300,000 more Americans could die by the time the wave subsides in mid-March.

The seven-day rolling average for daily new COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. has been trending upward since mid-November, reaching nearly 1,700 on Jan. 17 — still below the peak of 3,300 in January 2021. COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents started rising slightly two weeks ago, although still at a rate 10 times less than last year before most residents were vaccinated.

Despite signs Omicron causes milder disease on average, the unprecedented level of infection spreading through the country means many vulnerable people will become severely sick.
If the higher end of projections comes to pass, that would push total U.S. deaths from COVID-19 to more than 1 million by early spring.

Oklahoma pastor faces criticism for rubbing spit on parishoner's face

** most shocking article title of the year? **

Oklahoma pastor faces criticism for rubbing spit on parishoner’s face
pastor from a megachurch in Tulsa, Oklahoma, faced a wave of criticism online over video of him rubbing spit on a worshipper’s face.

During a sermon on Sunday, Michael Todd, a 34-year-old lead pastor at Transformation church, spat into his hand twice.

“Receiving vision from God might get nasty,” he said, before turning to the man on the stage.

The incident came about 40 minutes into a two-hour service, when Todd discussed Mark 8:22-25, a Bible passage in which Jesus restores a blind man’s sight in the village of Bethsaida by rubbing spit on to his eyes.

The parishioner in Tulsa was identified as Todd’s brother, Brentom Todd. When Todd rubbed his hands on to his brother’s face, the audience let out an audible gasp.

Billionaire Warriors owner Palihapitiya: "Nobody cares about what's happening to the Uyghurs, OK? "

Chamath Palihapitiya, a billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist and part-owner of the Golden State Warriors, attempted to backtrack from recent comments he made that “nobody cares,” including himself, about the ongoing Uyghur genocide in China.

The subject came up on Palihapitiya's “All-In Podcast,” when co-host Jason Calacanis praised President Joe Biden’s condemnation of the human rights abuses inflicted by the Chinese government, including genocide and forced labor in the northwest region of Xinjiang. In December, Biden signed legislation banning imports from the region.

Just before the 15-minute mark of the podcast, Palihapitiya interrupted Calacanis and said, “Nobody cares about what’s happening to the Uyghurs, OK? You bring it up because you really care. And I think that’s nice that you care. The rest of us don’t care.”

When Calacanis responded by asking Palihapitiya if he personally doesn’t care, Palihapitiya continued: “I’m telling you a very hard ugly truth, OK? Of all the things I care about, yes, it is below my line.”

Palihapitiya repeated that the genocide was below his line, and went on to say that he instead cares about such issues as America’s supply-chain problems, climate change and the potential harm to the United States economy if China were to invade Taiwan.

My Husband former QAnon turned patriot….now American state citizen.
He has bought into every conspiracy theory since the beginning of Covid. After the Jan 6, insurrection he identified as a Patriot. He finally started to see the the scam. Buying the “patriot” products/supplies/supplements. They just wanted his money. The new obsession is Anna Von Reitz. He has become an American State Citizen. He continues to stay on the computer. Lots of zoom meetings. No longer has a current driver’s license. No longer paying taxes. Sending certified letters to credit card companies and no telling who else -saying that’s it’s all fraud and he doesn’t owe them anything. He doesn’t see the scam. I know he has payed out hundreds to this state assembly.
Life has been hell for me and my family. He becomes very irate if I try to discuss my concerns. To the point of violence. Anyone know about this Anna Von Reitz and these state assemblies? I have a hard time finding real information.
And yes I know I’m fighting a loosing battle. The man I married no longer exists and I need to get out. Thanks for any info!

taking my Canadian Qanon brother to the border tomorrow. mixed feelings, and relief.
Content: Vaccine/Qadjacent
yes, I am dropping him off at the US border tomorrow. longest drive of my life, but I am done. He is the last relative from my mother and father's line that I will ever have contact with. He is diabetic. and not in good health. he has everything paid for here in Canada. I tried for years, and I have 2 degrees in biology and nothing works.

I am sure you all have heard some of this before.

Trump was the best president in history, the virus does not exist, the deaths are fake information

if the virus does exist, it was planned and man made

the mask mandates are for controlling the population

the vaccines alter your DNA and you will die

there are hidden camps in Canada to scoop up the unvaccinated and make them work

covid parties should happen everywhere. ( even though the virus is fake and man made)

you get it. I cannot take another day. am done.

I am sorry to add another to you in the USA, but he thinks Canada is Totalitarian Fascist country.

thanks for listening to my rant. Peace to you losing family to this nightmare

EDIT, I tried getting him mental health support for the last 7 years.

For two Italian musicians, being unvaccinated means being locked out of public life

Married cellists Claudio Ronco, right, and Emanuela Vozza are both unvaccinated and unable to perform publicly under Italy's coronavirus rules.

OSIGO, Italy - After many rounds of rules targeting the unvaccinated, the chamber musician's new life is unrecognizable from the old. Claudio Ronco once performed all over Europe, but now he can't even board a plane. He can't check into a hotel, eat at restaurant or get a coffee at a bar. Most important, he can't use the water taxis needed to get around Venice, his home for 30 years - a loss of mobility that recently prompted him to gather up two of his prized cellos, lock up his Venetian apartment and retreat with his wife to a home owned by his in-laws one hour away in the hills.

"Isolation," Ronco called it, on the fourth day in a row that he hadn't left the house.

----------------------

For people like Ronco, the choice is to get inoculated or face exclusion.

Ronco, 66, knows some people who have relented, including a fellow musician with three kids and a mortgage. He knows others who are scrambling for hard-to-get medical exemptions. But Ronco - an Orthodox Jew and a specialist in 18th-century music who tends to distrust the trends of the masses - figures this is an instance when he can try to withstand the mounting pressure. His savings are thinning, but not gone. His children are grown. His wife, Emanuela Vozza, a fellow cellist, also unvaccinated, feels as he does. So day after day, his resistance has continued: A musician who once played at Milan's famed La Scala has been instead working alongside Vozza, editing recordings they've made in their countryside living room, unable for the foreseeable future to perform for a crowd.

----

Some of the unvaccinated people Ronco knows keep a low profile. Ronco understands why: Their decisions have been criticized vehemently by politicians, by virologists, even by Pope Francis. Days ago, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the unvaccinated are responsible for "most of the problems we have today," disproportionately occupying intensive care beds.

"We're flat-earthers," Ronco said, describing the view of people like himself that has taken hold. "With total disrespect for the system and humanity itself."

COVID Patient Flown to Texas After Minnesota Doctors Decided to Pull Plug on Ventilator

AMinnesota woman whose husband neared death from COVID appealed to the courts to force his hospital to halt their plans to pull the plug on the man’s ventilator.

Scott Quiner, 55, a reportedly unvaccinated man who had been battling COVID in Mercy Hospital’s ICU in Coon Rapids since November, was set to have his ventilator shut off on Jan. 13, according to a petition filed in court one day before the deadline by his wife, Anne Quiner.

Quiner said the decision by the hospital would “end my husband’s life” and appealed to the Anoka County Court for a restraining order against the hospital. “Absent an Order from the court,” she wrote in the petition, “my husband will die.”

On Jan. 13, a district court judge ordered Mercy Hospital not to turn off Quiner’s ventilator.

On Monday morning, Marjorie Holsten, an attorney representing Quiner’s wife, told the Star Tribune that Quiner has now been transferred to a hospital in Texas.

"The doctor said Scott was the most undernourished patient he has ever seen,” Holsten told the outlet. “The last update I got was yesterday afternoon after some tests had been run; all organs are working except his lungs.”
