gop ken paxton favored to win texas atty gen despite indictment & theft of pen

http://spectrumlocalnews.com/tx/austin/news/2018/10/28/ken-paxton-favored-to-win-despite-indictment

He is still under indictment, having pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of securities fraud. Despite this, the Republican is favored to win a second term in November. His wife is on the cusp of becoming a state senator and President Donald Trump singled him out as doing a “great job” at a recent midterm rally in Houston.

“You have an attorney general who doesn’t stop. He’s tough. He’s smart. He collects more money for this state, Ken Paxton. You’re doing a great job, Ken,” Trump said at a rally Monday.

Although he is not the only incumbent running under indictment this year, Paxton has approached Election Day having regained his footing within the GOP. His Democratic opponent, Justin Nelson, is doing all he can to tell voters that Texas’ top law enforcement officer still faces a felony trial.

Paxton has laid low in his campaign, sticking mostly to Republican-friendly events and staying clear of the media

'Voting while black': How activists are racing to create a midterm 'black wave'

https://fox2now.com/2018/10/28/voting-while-black-how-activists-are-racing-to-create-a-midterm-black-wave/

On a drizzly Saturday morning, nearly 200 people gathered in a downtown conference center here for what was billed as a “black joy” brunch — complete with mimosas, glasses of sweet tea and plates of fried chicken and waffles.

But the gathering wasn’t merely social.

As a DJ blared Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” over the sound system, the crowd of mostly African-American women pulled out their cell phones, logged into an online voter-outreach tool called Relay and began a texting marathon. In a little more than two hours, they had reached 65,000 infrequent African-American voters in a swath of rural Georgia, known as the Black Belt.

Their messages warned of purges of African-American residents from the voting rolls and urged support for Stacey Abrams, the Georgia Democrat who’s vying to make history as the nation’s first black female governor.

This brunch and a crop of other quasi-social events organized around the country by the two-year-old Color of Change PAC seek to drive black turnout in key states. That includes Georgia, where African-Americans make up nearly 31% of the population but, like many voters, sit out off-year elections in droves.

The event also illustrates how a little-known but growing network of African-American political groups is laboring behind the scenes to reshape who will vote in the midterms and engineer what Color of Change’s executive director, Arisha Hatch, hopes will become a “black wave” that sweeps Abrams and other Democrats into power.

Their ultimate goal: build lasting political clout for African Americans, especially in the South, where more than half of the nation’s black residents live. To do so, they will have to defy history and permanently change decades of voting behavior.

63-year-old Greentown woman charged in racist letter incident

Parts of the letter were quoted in the affidavit, which removed the racist vulgarities used by Cantwell.

“No N---- wanted in this neighborhood-THIS IS A WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD-some people find N-----Stressful,” Cantwell wrote, capitalizing the racist insult.

Another paragraph began: “YOUR N---- KID IS NOT WELCOME.”

The final paragraph noted: “YOU CAN SELL YOUR HOUSE AND MAKE MONEY ON IT RIGHT NOW,” and, “BY THE WAY HOPE YOU HAVE DEEP POCKETS.”

The letter, noted the affidavit, contained several racial claims about stress-related health issues and supposed bullying and battering incidents that led to family trauma and even a separate comment about the property having septic issues.

On Oct. 15, the father informed law enforcement that he suspected Cantwell was responsible for the incident. He was previously told by the home’s seller that Cantwell was opposed to the family moving into the neighborhood because of their black son, the man explained.

Investigators, who first believed the letter was written by juveniles, later obtained text messages that had been sent by Cantwell to another person, whose name was retracted from the affidavit.

“I am stressing now that we are going to get black neighbors,” Cantwell texted. “I am hoping that more people look at the house and an all-white family are the ultimate buyers. I am afraid the stress of black neighbors could put me in the hospital.

“My blood pressure is elevated just thinking about the possibility.”

According to police, Cantwell, in an Oct. 18 interview, admitted to writing the letter out of anger and toilet-papering the yard, again justifying her actions by referencing past incidents she said caused her family harm.

“I mean, the blacks get away with it every time,” Cantwell told an investigator, according to the affidavit.

“Just rage, I was trying to vent,” she added about the toilet-papering.

Cantwell later told the investigator: “I was just trying to let them know that they weren’t really … welcome as far as us. … I just needed to let off some steam and it was the – I’m not a violent person so I didn’t think it was any big deal.”
