Snow-Stuck Little Ferry Driver Burns To Death After Refusing To Let Off Gas

Police tried in vain to rescue a Little Ferry driver who was killed when his SUV went up in flames as he tried to drive out of a snowbank Wednesday morning.

Responding to a call from a borough DPW worker, Little Ferry Police Officer Joseph Convery found a Mazda CX-5 that jumped a parking divider and got stuck in the snow near the soccer field off Mehrhof Road shortly after 9 a.m., Police Chief James Walters said.

The 62-year-old borough driver was flooring the accelerator when Convery – who’s also a borough firefighter -- started banging on the window trying to get him to stop, Walters said.

Officer Joseph Montemuro soon joined Convery. The officers called a tow truck and continued trying to get the driver's attention.

He “totally ignored them," however, "didn’t even acknowledge them, as they yelled at him, banged on the window and tried to get into the car,” Walters said. “He wouldn’t let off the gas.”

The officers then saw flames below the vehicle.

Convery tried desperately to break the window as Montemuro ran for a fire extinguisher, Walters said.

But the SUV “ignited and was engulfed within seconds,” the chief said.

Borough firefighters doused the flames. The driver was burned beyond recognition.

"Imagine having to see that," Walters said. "It was horrible."

She posted an ad for a roommate. What's the worst that could happen?

But Gladstone did not sign. Instead, the conversation seemed to embolden her in her campaign to occupy the 14-by-21-foot living room. She started planting Lily, out of school for the summer, in front of the TV for hours. When Russell asked to watch The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Gladstone said the movies were educational, mandated by Lily’s custody lawyer. (One was the Dustin Hoffman–Meryl Streep divorce drama Kramer vs. Kramer.) Their dynamic became excruciatingly petty. At one point, Russell retaliated by hiding the remote in her purse. And once, when Russell managed to stretch out on the couch, Gladstone came into the room and perched silently behind her on the windowsill. The bathroom became another zone of contention; Russell began brushing her teeth in the building’s laundry room because Gladstone would run into the bathroom as soon as she heard her get up. On August 1, after a month of nonpayment, Gladstone began urgently asking for a second set of keys, sending Russell a text so long it arrived as an attachment.

In Gladstone’s version of these events, it was Russell who was waging the campaign of terror. She wrote in the text: “You intentionally intimidated us and used what you know is our biggest vulnerability: our home and safety […] We didn’t owe anything we weren’t dirty we’re so clean and organized we’re respectful beyond reason.” Gladstone said Lily was “profoundly afraid” of Russell but that she was “trying to make it livable and peaceful so I remain (beyond) civil but am I showing her that people can treat you like that and you just smile and fake it?”

Though Gladstone and Lily had arrived with virtually no belongings (other than Happy), Russell realized by the end of the summer that they had taken over the living room. Where there had been just a couch, a few chairs, a desk, and the TV, now there were dozens of shopping bags, schoolbooks, paperwork, cleaning supplies, candles, and empty Amazon boxes filling the room. When Russell moved her TV into her bedroom, Gladstone fashioned its stand into an arts-and-crafts table.

On March 20, 2020, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered a stop to all eviction proceedings in the state. It gave many residents the breathing room they needed amid pandemic job losses. For Heidi Russell, it prolonged an absolute nightmare. In a lengthy piece for New York Magazine, Bridget Read recounts Russell's saga, which started, seemingly fortuitously, in 2016. That was the year in which Read and her roommate Valentina Bajada were able to purchase their 860-square-foot West Village apartment for the "insider rate" of $450,000. For Manhattan it was a steal, but it was still more than they could afford, so they decided to AirBnb one of the bedrooms when Bajada left the country for an extended period. In December 2018, Katherine Gladstone and her 10-year-old stayed in the room for a few nights, uneventfully—leading Russell to think it would be a good move to rent to her long-term.

It most definitely was not, says Russell, whose claims include: Gladstone's refusal in June 2019 to leave by the end of the first month after it didn't seem like a good fit; her refusal to leave entirely; close to zero payment of rent; and Gladstone commandeering the bathroom every morning and taking control of the living room. What Read unspools is Russell's discovery that she was far from the first landlord to be stiffed by the 42-year-old and forced to fight tirelessly to get her out; in one case, someone who sublet his studio to her as a way of covering the last 4 months of his lease ended up out $20,000 after she didn't pay rent and didn't leave when the lease ended. Relief seemingly came in early 2020, when Russell was granted a warrant of eviction that would be carried out by marshals—with the date being 11 days after the eviction freeze.

Biden is being a hardass to Trump aides...not letting them extend their parental leave

Trump aides made a late request to Team Biden to extend their parental leave. They said no.
The Trump political appointees said they were surprised they were turned down. The White House says they shouldn’t have been.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/02/parental-leave-trump-aides-465302

After four years in the Trump administration, Vanessa Ambrosini was looking forward to three months of parental leave when she and her husband welcomed a baby a week before Christmas. The Commerce Department’s human resources office had given her approval for it. But then she was surprised to find out the benefit was no longer available because of the change in administration.

“I got completely screwed,” she said in an interview. “There were no caveats in that language saying anything about if the administration turns, you get nothing and of course, that happened and so I got nothing.”

Ambrosini is among a number of ex-Trump political officials who lost their parental leave when Joe Biden was sworn into office. It’s a byproduct of the field they’re in: Their boss (the president) may have been the one let go, but his departure has meant that they, too, lose their jobs and benefits. Still, they argue that the Biden administration should have honored their leave by keeping them on payroll until the end of it — a request that, emails reviewed by POLITICO show, the Biden transition did not grant.

The Biden White House declined to speak about the issue on record. Instead, an official noted anonymously that political appointees “do not enjoy the promise of federal employment past the end of the administration in which they choose to serve.” The official blamed the fact that the Trump administration dragged its heels on a quick and orderly transition as a reason why some on his team were caught off guard by the benefits ending.

guy who killed 2 FBI tracked their movement through his doorbell camera and fired thru unopened door

Former US marshal turned private investigator Barry Golden said the installation of doorbell cameras and surveillance on people's homes had reduced the FBI's element of surprise in recent years.

'More people these days have cameras outside their home, so chances are that the element of surprise might be out the window, if someone is sitting there watching or getting a text alert,' Golden said.

Retired FBI agent Richard Kolko told CBS Miami that something obviously went 'awfully wrong'.

'Getting that many agents caught up in the line of fire – something really went wrong and they're going to break that all down,' Kolko said.

He said the planning phase of executing a search warrant is meticulous.

Tokyo Olympics Chief Suggests Limits for Women at Meetings

Tokyo Olympics Chief Suggests Limits for Women at Meetings
Yoshiro Mori, a former prime minister of Japan, said regulating women’s speaking time was needed “or else we’ll never be able to finish.”

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics, already facing rising costs and significant public opposition to this summer’s Games, faced a new furor on Wednesday after the president of the Tokyo organizing committee suggested women talk too much in meetings.

-----------------

“On boards with a lot of women, the board meetings take so much time,” Mr. Mori, 83, said to laughter, according to a report in the Asahi Shimbun, one of the country’s largest daily newspapers. “Women have a strong sense of competition. If one person raises their hand, others probably think, I need to say something too. That’s why everyone speaks.”

Mr. Mori, a former prime minister, was responding to a question asking him to comment on the Olympic committee’s plan to increase the number of women board members to more than 40 percent of the total.

-----------

On Twitter, users quickly began calling for Mori to resign. Others suggested Mori’s age, and his outdated attitude, were the real problem.

At a news conference on Thursday, Mr. Mori said he had no intention of resigning. “I recognize the remark was against the spirit of Olympics and Paralympics,” he said. “I deeply regret what I said.” Mr. Mori said he wanted to retract his remarks, and he apologized “to those who felt uncomfortable.”

The Downside to Life in a Supertall Tower: Leaks, Creaks, Breaks

The Downside to Life in a Supertall Tower: Leaks, Creaks, Breaks
432 Park, one of the wealthiest addresses in the world, faces some significant design problems, and other luxury high-rises may share its fate.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/03/realestate/luxury-high-rise-432-park.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage

Less than a decade after a spate of record-breaking condo towers reached new heights in New York, the first reports of defects and complaints are beginning to emerge, raising concerns that some of the construction methods and materials used have not lived up to the engineering breakthroughs that only recently enabled 1,000-foot-high trophy apartments. Engineers privy to some of the disputes say many of the same issues are occurring quietly in other new towers.

----------

“I was convinced it would be the best building in New York,” said Sarina Abramovich, one of the earliest residents of 432 Park. “They’re still billing it as God’s gift to the world, and it’s not.”

===========

Many of the mechanical issues cited at 432 Park are occurring at other supertall residential towers, according to several engineers who have worked on the buildings.

All buildings sway in the wind, but at exceptional heights, those forces are stronger. A management email explained that “a high-wind condition” stopped an elevator and caused a resident to be “entrapped” on the evening of Oct. 31, 2019 for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Wind sway can cause the cables in the elevator shaft to slap around and lead to slowdowns or shutdowns, according to an engineer who asked not to be named, because he has worked on other towers in New York with similar issues.

One of the most common complaints in supertall buildings is noise, said Luke Leung, a director at the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. He has heard metal partitions between walls groan as buildings sway, and the ghostly whistle of rushing air in doorways and elevator shafts.

Residents at 432 Park complained of creaking, banging and clicking noises in their apartments, and a trash chute “that sounds like a bomb” when garbage is tossed, according to notes from a 2019 owners’ meeting.

Former Columbus Police Officer Is Charged With Murder
Adam Coy fatally shot Andre Hill in December within seconds of approaching him in a garage.

------

The former officer, Adam Coy, a 19-year veteran, was also charged with felonious assault and two counts of dereliction of duty. He was fired several weeks after the shooting.

Mr. Coy shot Andre Hill, 47, after responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle. When he and another officer arrived at the scene, Mr. Coy found Mr. Hill in a garage and opened fire within seconds. Mr. Hill, who had been holding a cellphone, died at a hospital shortly after.

Mr. Yost said his office acted as a special prosecutor in the case, reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses and presenting charges to a grand jury. The grand jury indicted Mr. Coy, who was arrested on Wednesday.

One of the biggest names in country music uses "N word", major chains pull his music

One of the biggest names in country music will not have his songs played on major chains of radio stations and streaming platforms after he was heard saying a racial slur.

Morgan Wallen, whose “Dangerous” album has remained on top of the Billboard chart for the three straight weeks, said in a statement he is “embarrassed and sorry” for using the racial slur. A clip shared by TMZ Tuesday shows him calling one of his friends the N-word.

“I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back,” he said in a statement to The Tennessean. “There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.”

But his language has pushed Cumulus Media, which controls more than 400 radio stations in the United States, to remove Wallen’s music from their rotation, Variety reported.

Cumulus Media’s executive vice president of programming sent an email to their program directors regarding them of the directive.
