LGBTQ book ban proponent faces felony child molestation charge in Missouri
The man tried to have the award-winning graphic memoir “Fun Home,” among other LGBTQ titles, removed from school libraries in Kansas City.

A Missouri man who sought to ban several LGBTQ books from schools for depicting sexual content is now facing a felony charge of second-degree child molestation.

Ryan Utterback, a 29-year-old parent from a suburb of Kansas City, also faces a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree domestic assault and, in a separate case, a misdemeanor of furnishing or attempting to furnish pornographic material to a minor.

Utterback had spoken at a school board meeting in November, as first reported by local news station KMBC-TV, an ABC affiliate, to advocate for the removal of books in North Kansas City Schools libraries that depicted sexual acts.

------------------

Accusations against Utterback, according to court documents, describe separate instances in 2020 in which he allegedly touched a 12-year-old girl under her clothes and rubbed a teenager’s leg underneath her jeans. Another case alleged in 2021 that he showed pornographic video footage to a child starting from when she was around 4 years old.

picture of books being carted off from school library

Books that have been banned in Texas
Some school districts have already started taking books off their shelves even without objections from parents. An investigation by NBC News found that 400 titles dealing with race, sexuality and gender were removed from school libraries in the North East Independent School District in San Antonio. No formal complaint has been filed for their removal but administrators did so using Rep. Krause’s list to review them under the new state law.

The Katy Independent School District outside of Houston has already decided that nine books are not appropriate for students at any grade level from at least 30 that it is reviewing. Under the district's policies it cannot open a review without a formal challenge to a book, but most of the books never received any such challenge.

The Granbury Independent School District near Fort Worth confirmed at the end of January that it had removed another 125 books from shelves. The district had previously decided to permanently remove five young adult fiction books, all written by Abbi Glines. The other books will be reviewed with a spokesperson telling WFAA that most of the books would likely return to shelves but was not forthcoming with a timeline.

Nor has the district complied with a records request for the titles that have been pulled, but Christopher Tackett a parent in the district tweeted out a photo of a list he was given in response to his request. Additionally, he posted a photo of boxes being removed from the library that had “Krause List” on the side.

Elderly Florida Democrats Say GOP Canvassers Duped Them Into Changing Party Affiliation

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/elderly-florida-democrats-say-gop-canvassers-duped-them-into-changing-party-affiliation/ar-AATrWKz

------

The report follows a December story about an unidentified 84-year-old woman in the same complex, Haley Sofge Towers, who was duped last fall. WPLG Local 10 News confirmed that the woman’s party affiliation was changed by a third-party voter registration organization, which regularly canvas neighborhoods to help people register to vote, and that the third-party organization was the Republican Party of Florida. The woman’s granddaughter says she and her grandmother discovered the change when her grandmother received a new voter registration card in the mail, and that neither gave permission for the party change.

Taddeo says that her office began receiving calls after the initial incident was reported in December. “We started getting phone calls in my office from people saying the same thing happened to me. We talked to those people, we talked to other people. People even shared pictures with us, of the forms, of their former voter registration registration card and their new voter registration card.”

Taddeo sent a letter to Florida Secretary of State Laurel Lee, a Republican, requesting an investigation, but says she did not receive a response. Secretary Lee’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Rolling Stone.

The letter sent Thursday is addressed instead to the supervisor of the Miami-Dade Elections Department. “It no longer appears that this was an isolated incident but a targeted effort to swindle one of our most vulnerable populations: our elders,” the letter read.

Would you pay $4,850 for a Super Bowl parking spot? Resellers are pushing up prices

Would you pay $4,850 for a Super Bowl parking spot? Resellers are pushing up prices

---------

Attendance will be at an all-time high when the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals clash at SoFi Stadium, which typically seats around 70,000 but can expand to as many as 100,000 for big events. But thanks to stages and event spaces occupying some of the lots surrounding the stadium, parking there will be extremely scarce.

That is forcing football fans to find alternative places to park. For a few hours Sunday, Inglewood businesses and residents with driveways and garages suddenly find themselves with some of the most valuable real estate in the city — and they’re looking to cash in.

More than 100 spots are up for grabs on the ticket exchange site StubHub, and they range wildly in price. A spot in the Civic Center parking garage costs $135, while the asking price for a spot in a small parking lot about a mile from the stadium is $4,850.

------------

Hugo Vincent lives a mile from the stadium, and he’s already sold a spot in his driveway for $200. As part of the arrangement, he agreed to drive the person to SoFi on game day.

“This place is a prison on Sundays. I can’t leave my own neighborhood because the traffic is so bad,” he said. “Why shouldn’t I be able to make some money for the inconvenience?”

5 persons of interest in HBCU bomb threat investigation:

The FBI has identified five persons of interest in connection with a series of bomb threats placed to historically Black colleges and universities in recent weeks, officials said, according to a source.

The persons of interest were connected to spoofed calls – emanating from a fake telephone number, the FBI official said, according to the source familiar with the contents of a call between FBI and DHS officials and state and local law enforcement on Tuesday.

During the call, the federal officials went into more detail about the nature of the bomb threats, which started in early January, and the most recent, which occurred Monday against HBCUs and other universities, according to the source.

--------

The FBI on Wednesday said it is investigating the bomb threats to predominantly HBCUs as hate crimes, according to a statement released by the Bureau.

“Although at this time no explosive devices have been found at any of the locations, the FBI takes all threats with the utmost seriousness and we are committed to thoroughly and aggressively investigating these threats,” the statement says.

Georgetown Law lecturer suspended over " we'll get lesser black woman" on SCOTUS tweet

in a tweet posted last week, that has since been deleted, Ilya Shapiro, the incoming executive director of the Center for the Constitution and senior lecturer at Georgetown University Law Center, said Biden will be nominating not "the objectively best pick" but a "lesser" Black woman to replace Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer who will be retiring at the end of the current term.

"Objectively best pick for Biden is Sri Srinivasan, who is solid prog & v smart. Even has identify politics benefit of being first Asian (Indian) American. But alas doesn't fit into the latest intersectionality hierarchy so we'll get lesser black woman. Thank heaven for small favors?" Shapiro said in the tweet, according to a story by Reason he shared on twitter.

Shapiro will remain on leave pending the outcome of an investigation conducted by the university and he will not be on campus, according to William Treanor, dean of Georgetown University Law Center.
