5 people were found slain in two rural Tennessee homes and a suspect is in custody

Five people were found dead in two homes Saturday evening in Sumner County, Tennessee, in what investigators are calling "related homicides."

A suspect, Michael Cummins, is in custody after being shot by police, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a release.
The bodies of four people and one injured person were found by authorities after a 911 call to a house about an hour northeast of Nashville, near the Kentucky state line. A fifth person was found slain in another home not far away, the TBI said.
Authorities did not say how they were killed or how the victims were related to each other

Sam Donaldson Explains How Sarah Huckabee Sanders' Lying Is Unprecedented

Sam Donaldson Explains How Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ Lying Is Unprecedented
“I think she’s had an Oscar, a lifetime achievement Oscar for lying,” the veteran ABC news anchor said of the White House press secretary.

Veteran ABC news anchor Sam Donaldson on Friday called out White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ well-documented history of lying as he appeared to suggest she deserved a “lifetime achievement Oscar” for spreading false and misleading information.

“Look, I’ve had the pleasure of working with almost every press secretary beginning with Pierre Salinger of John F. Kennedy’s administration and, except for Ron Ziegler who lied for Richard Nixon, I’ve never seen anything like this with Sarah Sanders,” Donaldson told CNN host Anderson Cooper.

Donaldson explained, however, how Ziegler lied only about matters related to the Watergate scandal but “would often be truthful” on other issues.

Sanders “simply lies about everything” on behalf of President Donald Trump’s administration, Donaldson claimed. “Not just one thing.”

“I think she’s had an Oscar, a lifetime achievement Oscar for lying,” he added. “And let’s face it, I don’t know her. I feel a little sorry for her because it’s the boss who does it. She takes the cue from him. Leadership begins at the top. And so it is all the bad things that happen in the administration.”

you can own that giant bird that killed its owner, he/she is up for sale

That bird — a hulking, flightless cassowary with a daggerlike claw on each foot — will go up for auction Saturday alongside about 100 other exotic animals that Hajos, 75, kept on his property near Gainesville, Florida. (Several other cassowaries are also slated to go on the auction block.)

Hajos fell between two cassowary pens on April 12 and was attacked through the fence by at least one of the birds, said Jeff Taylor, the deputy chief of Alachua County Fire Rescue. When rescue workers arrived they found him grievously injured on the ground between the two pens. An angry bird stood in one of the pens.

“A couple of people from our crew had to dodge the bird themselves,” Taylor said. “The bird was obviously agitated and was trying to come at them through the fence, but they were quick enough to get themselves out of the way of the bird.”

Cassowaries are emu-like birds that can stand up to 6 1/2 feet tall. They have an almost prehistoric appearance. Their bright blue faces are topped with a hornlike ridge and their bodies, which can weigh up to 130 pounds, are covered with dark feathers. Their two muscular legs each sport one dangerous claw up to 5 inches long.

---

Grotjahn said he heard that Hajos might have gone to the cassowary pens on the day he died to check on their eggs.

“The female cassowary, which is the larger of the two birds, saw he was messing with the eggs and you know how that goes,” he said. “It is like a bear protecting their young.”

It was not clear why the bird that killed Hajos was not put down after the attack.

An adult cassowary stands 150 to 180 c.m tall! Females are larger in size and more brightly colored. A female cassowary may grow to height of 2 meters and weigh 58.5 kilograms. The bird has small wings and three toes in each leg. It has sharp claws. The second toe has a dagger like claw 5 inches long. This becomes a mighty weapon when the bird kicks and attacks with it legs.

The bird can jump a height of 5 feet and run at a speed of 50 km/hour through dense forests. It can swim in rivers as well as in the sea. It has a horn-like soft, spongy crest, 18 c.m tall, on its head. This protects the bird’s head from collisions. It is probably used as a weapon to settle the dominance disputes also. It is useful while foraging for food, and acts as an amplifier for the low frequency sounds, the bird produces.

The average life span on this bird is 40 to 50 years. Usually very shy,the birds keep away from human interference. Their main food are plant shoots, grass seeds, fungi, invertebrates and small vertebrates.

A Tennessee movie theater changed 'Hellboy' to 'Heckboy' on its sign

A Tennessee movie theater attracted viral attention after it changed "Hellboy" to "Heckboy" on its sign because it's across the street from an elementary school.

The owner of The Roxy 8 Movie Theater in Dickson told CNN affiliate WZTV that she never puts words on the sign that could be considered profanity, since young children would see it.
Photos of the theater, an hour outside Nashville, have circulated widely on social media.

"As it turned out, our play on words became a little more exciting than we expected," Belinda Daniel told WZTV. "We are glad that we could share a small bit of our great community while also sharing a laugh with the rest of the world"

Republicans everywhere are waging a desperate battle against democracy

We are two years removed from an election in which the Republican nominee became president despite getting 3 million fewer votes than the Democrat, six months removed from a midterm election in which Democrats won sweeping victories at all levels, and 18 months away from the next presidential election. The Republican Party is in a panic — as well it should be, not just because its leader is extremely unpopular, but because its electoral coalition is shrinking as a proportion of the population.

In response, Republicans are waging a scorched-earth campaign against democracy itself.

-------------------------

This kind of thing has been going on for a while. When Republicans win an election, one of the first things they usually do is change the rules to increase the chances that even if they lose the next election, they will still retain power.

That’s above and beyond all the structural elements of our system that enable minority rule, such as the disproportionate power given to small states in the Senate and the electoral college that has allowed Republicans to become president with fewer votes than their opponents in two of the past five elections.

But all of this is taking on a greater urgency right now. As they look toward 2020, Republicans see an election with the potential to profoundly degrade their power, both in Washington and at the state level. President Trump is extremely unpopular, with approval ratings that have long hovered around 40 percent. Even more threatening, the 2016 election increasingly looks like the last gasp of the monochromatic Republican coalition, its final opportunity to win a national election with almost no nonwhite votes.

The 2018 elections offer Republicans a frightening preview of the future. Newly released census data shows that turnout spiked among young people, rising from 20 percent in the last midterm election in 2014 to 36 percent in 2018 among those under 30. It also rose proportionately more among those with higher educations and those living in metropolitan areas, both of which favor Democrats.

Obviously, the circumstances of every election are different. But all the demographic trends favor Democrats, as the country grows more ethnically diverse, more urban, more educated and less religious with each passing year. That means that every election, Republicans have to do something more than they did the last time in order to win.
