Dozens camp overnight for chance to buy $1.2 million Bay Area townhouses

The hopeful homeowners showed up in droves, queuing on the sidewalk in front of Santa Clara real estate development Nuevo Homes and settling into their makeshift campsites for the night. Then, they waited.

The scene resembled some sort of bizarre Black Friday sale with a line of people stretching down the block, many of them lingering there for hours.

The doorbuster deal in question? The chance to buy a newly built townhouse, 18 of which were listed for sale on Saturday morning at a fixed price of $1.2 million, reports NBC Bay Area. The properties were constructed by SummerHill Homes, which has completed more than 70 developments in the last 40 years, according to its website. Nuevo is among its most recent projects, debuting 331 homes as well as 20,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space in Sept. 2019.

-----------

Another realtor, Jeremy Naval, said he had been at the development since Wednesday. The general consensus among those vying for one of the townhouses was that it was easier to wait in line for hours than to engage in a bidding war.

63% of people who bought a home nationwide placed an offer without seeing the property

Found your California dream home? Good luck with that — it may be gone by tomorrow

------------

Homes are selling at warp speed nationwide, forcing would-be buyers to make snap decisions on what is typically the biggest purchase of their lives. In California, houses haven’t sold faster in at least three decades, according to data from the state’s main Realtors association.

In March, a home’s median time on the market in the Golden State was eight days, the shortest time period recorded by the California Assn. of Realtors, whose database goes back to 1990. In the bubble years of 2003 to 2005, homes typically took more than 20 days to sell. In the hot-market years preceding the pandemic, the median time on the market at times dipped further, hitting a low of 14 days in 2017.

-------------------

Frenzied home buyers are breaking all sorts of records. Last year, 63% of people who bought a home nationwide placed an offer without seeing the property, according to a survey by brokerage company Redfin, an all-time high since the survey’s debut in 2015.

Another Redfin survey found 43% of homes that were sold in the four weeks that ended April 11 fetched more than the list price, the highest since at least 2012.

South Bay real estate agent Garrison Comstock said he received 39 offers — about four times what he considered the high-water mark before the pandemic — on a three-bedroom house in Hawthorne that went into escrow for $116,000 over the asking price within six days of being listed.

Another agent, Lindsay Katz of Redfin, said her average sales pace is just two days.

Child Protective Services Investigates Half of all Black Children in California

Child Protective Services Investigates Half of all Black Children in California
A new study finds pervasive racial bias in the child welfare system.

----------------

“Spend a day at dependency court in any major city and you will see the unmistakable color of the child welfare system,” wrote Dorothy Roberts, a University of Pennsylvania law professor, in her 2001 book, Shattered Bonds. “The disproportionate number of Black children in America’s child welfare system is staggering.”

“I just don’t believe for a second that this many children and families require what is ultimately the heavy hand of the child protection system in their lives.”

A new study in the American Journal of Public Health quantifies the scope of this disproportionality today, tracking the rates of child protective service involvement in the lives of the half a million children born in 1999 in California. The number of Black children in the system continues to be staggering: Half of Black children, as well as half of Native American children, experienced a CPS investigation at some point during the first 18 years of their lives, compared to nearly a quarter of white children. One in eight Black children spent time in foster care—a rate three times as high as white children. Three percent of Black children experienced termination of parental rights, compared with 1 percent of white children.

-------------

CPS investigators often need to make quick, high-stakes decisions about whether a home is safe and suitable for children, and the broad nature of neglect leaves such decisions rife with implicit bias. “Every single kind of social hierarchy and form of discrimination that you can think of plays into the child welfare system and identifies who are the families that are going to be split up,” said Roberts recently. “It’s racist. It’s sexist. It’s ableist. It’s classist.”

------------------

Even when they’re ultimately dismissed, CPS investigations can themselves fuel trauma. Families with open cases are closely watched, with child welfare agencies tracking things from parental employment to the cleanliness of the home to the visitors coming and going. All the while, parents and children alike are forced to contend with the possibility of being separated, sometimes permanently. “I can’t think of anything more terrifying than having someone knock at your door because there are concerns that you’re not caring for your child,” says Putnam-Hornstein. “You know that the threat of losing your child looms large.”

Rental car prices are so high in Hawaii ($722 per day), tourists are renting U-Haul trucks

Rental car prices are so high in Hawaii, tourists are renting U-Haul trucks

https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/25/us/hawaii-u-haul-tourist-rental-trnd/index.html

U-Haul trucks are unexpectedly getting a new look in Hawaii.

While the trucks are usually used for moving, tourists are now renting them because rental car prices have skyrocketed with the rebound of the tourism industry.

Covid-19 brought tourism to a halt, but with states now easing restrictions, the industry has come bouncing back with force.
The cheapest rental car in Maui in March ran for $722 a day, according to CNN affiliate KHNL-TV.

"This surge in demand is primarily for our smaller vehicles," said Kaleo Alau, U-Haul Company of Hawaii president, in an emailed statement to CNN. "We realize this demand is occurring when tourists are unable to secure a rental car, or they learn that our rental fleet options are more affordable."

Of course, this now also means a shortage of U-Haul trucks for people who actually need to move, Alau said.
"We are working everyday with our primary customer base — the islands' residential movers — to ensure we can still meet their transportation needs," Alau said.

Virginia trooper is fired after telling black motorist: 'You're going to get your a** whooped!' during traffic stop

https://twitter.com/TheTNHoller/status/1386061859866959883

Black motorist Derrick Thompson, 28, filmed his encounter in April 2019
Virginia State Troopers pulled him over on his way to work
Footage shows Trooper Charles Hewitt threaten Thompson before his arrest
Thompson's attorney has revealed that Hewitt was fired in February
Thompson received a $20,000 settlement for having his rights violated

'He just illegally entered my car,' Thompson tells the camera, referring to Hewitt, who is seen at the window of the vehicle.

Hewitt replies: 'Take a look at me. I'm a f**king specimen right here, buddy. You are getting on my last nerve. You are gonna get your a** whooped!'

Thompson says: 'Sir, my hands are up, I'm not threat... I feel unsafe. I have just been threatened by an officer as two other officers stand by and say absolutely nothing.'

Thompson refuses to step out of the car, repeatedly saying that his hands are up and that he is no threat to the officers.

At that point, Hewitt reaches over and unlocks Thompson's seat belt and yells: 'I'm giving you to the count of three!'

He then looks directly into the camera and states 'Watch the show folks!'

Hewitt grabs Thompson around the neck and removes him from the car. At that point, the phone falls and the vision is obscured, but audio is still able to be heard.

'Sir, get off my neck! I am not resisting! You are harming me!' Thompson repeatedly says.

Tucker Carlson: If I Was Younger, I'd Consider Leaving America, wished he hadn't gone to college

Carlson: If I Was Younger, I'd Consider Leaving America
He slams fellow journalists as 'cringing animals'

--------

During the Outkick interview, Carlson also slammed "liberal arts education" and said he wished he hadn't gone to college. He said he pushed all four of his children to skip college, though none of them have done so. Asked what he would do if he was 30 years younger, the 52-year-old said he would move to Idaho or Montana to start his own newspaper instead of becoming part of a "system based on lies"—or just leave the country altogether. "I love America, but if I were 22, I might look to see if there’s another place that’s going to treat me as an individual and not as a member of a tribe," he said.

What Do Women Want? For Men to Get Covid Vaccines. women are getting vaxxed at higher rate

What Do Women Want? For Men to Get Covid Vaccines.
As the Biden administration seeks to get most adults vaccinated by summer, men are holding back.

Holly Elgison and Len Schillaci are a mixed vaxxed couple, and they are far from alone.

“I was always going to get the vaccine, 100 percent,” said Ms. Elgison, a medical claims auditor in Valrico, Fla.

Her husband, a disaster insurance adjuster, said he will pass. “To be honest with you, I think that the worst of Covid is behind us,” Mr. Schillaci said. “I’m good.”

As the Biden administration seeks to get 80 percent of adult Americans immunized by summer, the continuing reluctance of men to get a shot could impede that goal.

Women are getting vaccinated at a far higher rate — about 10 percentage points — than men, even though the male-female divide is roughly even in the nation’s overall population. The trend is worrisome to many, especially as vaccination rates have dipped a bit recently.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/22/health/covid-vaccines-rates-men-and-women.html

The reasons for the U.S. gender gap are many, reflecting the role of women in specific occupations that received early vaccine priority, political and cultural differences and long standing patterns of women embracing preventive care more often generally than men.

The gap exists even as Covid-19 deaths worldwide have been about 2.4 times higher for men than among women. And the division elucidates the reality of women’s disproportionate role in caring for others in American society.
