2 People Were Critically Injured After A Balcony Collapse In Malibu Saturday; 4 Other People Were Also Transported To The Hospital

MALIBU (CBSLA) — Two people were critically injured Saturday after a balcony collapsed over the rocks and sand in Malibu. At least four people were transported to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to county fire officials. Another five people were treated at the scene.

CBSLA’s Laurie Perez spoke with the owner of the home who rented out the residence to some young people for the weekend. The owner said that she learned from neighbors that there were about 30 people at the home, far more than the six that were allowed to be there.

For three hours, according to the homeowner, she tried to get the people to leave, was on the phone with them up to 5 p.m. Not more than 15 minutes later, the crowded deck collapsed while, sending people some 15-feet below to the rocks and sand.

“We heard a crack, and I literally saw all my best friends and my girlfriend fall 15-feet to the rocks. The deck just literally gave out. It could’ve been a lot worse, but it’s pretty awful,” a witness told CBSLA.

Some of those injured are looking into filing a lawsuit in the coming days.

Wasps have a bad rap. This summer, let's learn to love them

These insects, however, have a PR problem. They're unpopular with the general public and researchers alike. That attitude has resulted in gaping holes in scientific knowledge about wasps' role in ecosystems, the researchers said, and limited our understanding of threats posed to wasps by urbanization, climate crises and more.

--------------------------

What wasps do for our world
"Everyone just kind of associates (wasps) with annoying them at barbecues or beers gardens," said lead study author Ryan Brock, a doctoral student in evolutionary ecology at the University of East Anglia. "It's always like: What is the point of wasps?"
Brock explained that the 33,000-odd varieties of stinging wasps included in the new study do more than hover, menacingly, near the potato salad.

"The two main things that wasps are doing for our ecosystems are as pest controllers and as pollinators," he said. Nearly 1,000 plant species may be pollinated by stinging wasps, found the review, including 164 species, such as the hammer orchid, that rely on wasps alone for pollination.

Should stinging wasps disappear overnight, those 164 plant species would be lost.

The insects are also agile predators. "Wasp species that live in large colonies are fantastic at hunting other insect species," Brock said. Without wasps, Brock said there could be an explosion in caterpillars and aphids. That, in turn, could decimate backyard gardens and crop yields.

Houston deputy "Get your tiger back inside"

Police in Houston are looking for a man who claimed to be "with the zoo" after a tiger apparently escaped from his residence and roamed the neighborhood. The tiger—which was wearing a collar—was confronted by an armed off-duty Waller County Sheriff's Office deputy who was nearby when neighbors reported the big cat, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The deputy yelled "Get your tiger back inside," along with a few swear words, at a man who emerged from the residence. The man brought the tiger back inside the residence without shots being fired. Minutes later, he put the animal in a white Jeep Cherokee and took off before police arrived. Police say they pursued the man but lost sight of him as he sped away.

Jose Ramos tells KHOU11 that he saw the tiger walking around and lying in grass across the street from his home around 8pm Sunday. He says he posted on a warning on a neighborhood forum, which apparently alerted the off-duty deputy, and called 911.

Other neighbors say they had previously seen what appeared to be a monkey in a window at the home, but had no idea a tiger was being kept there. The homeowner says people who live in the rental property moved in last year—and didn't mention owning any animals, or pay a pet deposit. Houston residents are not allowed to keep tigers as pets.

14 year old murder suspect posts selfie from back of police car

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9563145/Boy-14-charged-murder-13-year-old-Florida-cheerleader.html

A fourteen-year-old boy has been charged with murdering a 13-year-old Florida cheerleader whose body was found in woods on Sunday night, less than 12 hours after she was reported missing.

Aiden Fucci, 14, has been named by police as the suspect in the killing of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey.

On Sunday night, he took a selfie in the back of a cop car which he then posted on Snapchat with the caption 'hey guys has anybody seen Tristyn lately'.

Police confirmed to News Jax, a local site in Jacksonville, that the selfie was part of their investigation.

He has been taken into custody on second-degree murder charges but prosecutors have not yet decided if he will be charged as a juvenile or adult.

Tristyn's body was found in woods near Fucci's home on Sunday night, less than 12 hours after her family reported her missing. It's unclear how she died but police say her body was found fully clothed - she was wearing a dark top and white cheer skirt.

California man charged with using $5 million PPP loans to buy a Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bentley

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/California-man-charged-5-million-PPP-Ferrari-16165820.php

Mustafa Qadiri, 38, of Irvine was indicted by a federal grand jury on four counts of bank fraud, four counts of wire fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft and six counts of money laundering, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office of California.

Prosecutors said Qadiri’s efforts to obtain federal loans started in late May 2020 and netted him nearly $5.1 million in June last year.

Qadiri applied for the loans through the government program for four different companies in Southern California, all of which were not in operation, say prosecutors. He also allegedly submitted fraudulent company information, altered bank account records and stole another person's identity and Social Security number, officials say.

Beyond the luxury vehicles, Qadiri is also accused of spending the money on "lavish vacations," court documents reveal.

Some of Qadiri's cars have already been seized, prosecutors said, including a 570 horsepower 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia and a 2020 Bentley Continental GT Coupe. Both vehicles can sell for far over $100,000 in today's market.

-----------------------

Additionally, $2 million from Qadiri's bank account was seized along with the cars by federal agents when he surrendered himself to authorities Friday morning, reports USA Today.

sacramento cop under arrest.. filed false report regarding reason for stopping a black motorist

The police department said in a brief announcement Thursday afternoon that it had arrested Alexa Palubicki, 26, after being alerted to potential problems by other officers, and Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert’s office filed two felony counts in the case late Thursday.

That felony complaint says Palubicki filed a false report when she wrote that she stopped to question a motorist at the gas station after seeing his vehicle “make the turn without utilizing a turn signal.”

-------------

The case began at 12:33 a.m. on July 11 at the Shell gas station at 225 Jibboom St., near Discovery Park, documents obtained by The Bee say.

Palubicki and her partner, another female officer, spotted a 27-year-old Black man driving a gray 2020 Nissan Altima that “abruptly” pulled into the Shell station and parked across two parking spaces, the documents say.

The driver got out and the officers approached him to “advise him that he parked illegally,” the documents say.

Palubicki returned to the patrol car to run a records check and discovered the driver had a suspended license, the documents say.

Her partner looked into the car and thought she saw marijuana in a plastic cup in the console, leading to a search of the vehicle despite repeated protests from the motorist that they did not have permission to search the car, the documents say.

--------

By the time the charges were dropped, police investigators had become aware of allegations that the probable cause cited for approaching the motorist had come under question inside the department.

Court orders upstate woman to remove Confederate flag or risk custody of multi racial child

ALBANY – Appellate justices in Albany on Thursday ordered a woman in Tompkins County to remove a rock from her driveway that is painted with a Confederate flag or risk a "change of circumstances" in the custody case of her multiracial daughter.

In a unanimous 5-0 ruling, appellate justices allowed the couple to retain joint custody of the child, who was born in 2014 and attends school in the Dryden Central School District, which is east of Ithaca.

But if the Confederate-flag-decorated rock is not removed by June 1, Family Court would be obliged to factor its presence "into any future best interests analysis” regarding the child, stated Justice Stanley Pritzker, who authored the decision by the Appellate Division of state Supreme Court's Third Department, the state's second-highest court.

The mother, identified only as Christie BB, testified at a fact-finding hearing that “she had a rock with a Confederate flag painted on it at her home,” Pritzker said in the ruling.

“In response to questioning, the mother testified that she has never used any racial slurs in front of the child or at all,” the ruling said.

Former Cal State dean now under criminal investigation for lavish spending on travel

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-05-09/former-cal-state-san-marcos-dean-now-under-criminal-investigation-university-says

Michael Schroder, the former dean of extended studies at Cal State San Marcos who racked up tens of thousands of dollars in improper travel billings, is now under criminal investigation by the San Diego County district attorney’s office, university officials said. Schroder, who left the campus after the San Diego Union-Tribune disclosed his lavish spending practices in 2019, also is being asked to make restitution for expenses that did not meet university standards, a Cal State San Marcos spokeswoman confirmed.

-----------------------

The findings, released in February 2020, showed the dean racked up more than $41,000 in unallowable expenses. He also filed dozens of fraudulent claims, submitted duplicate expense reports and collected improper reimbursements, the review showed.

On one day, for example, Schroder attended an NFL game and a Guns N’ Roses concert, billing both events to the university as college business, the audit said.

-------------------

The former dean was one of several Cal State San Marcos administrators who, combined, spent more than $300,000 traveling on university business between 2017 and 2019, the Union-Tribune reported in October 2019.

Documents obtained by the newspaper showed that Schroder, former president Karen Haynes and other university officials stayed at resorts that cost $600 and $700 per night, routinely hired private drivers and billed the school for fine dining and alcohol.

Schroder charged the university for first-class airfare and stays at the Ritz-Carlton, among other luxury hotels.

He also booked stays at resorts that were miles away from destinations he cited as the purpose for his university travel, the Union-Tribune reported. He was particularly fond of the $130 chilled seafood platter at Vigilucci’s in Encinitas, where he dined multiple times, records show.
