Florida orders Orange County schools to reveal who bought 'Gender Queer' book for libraries

ORLANDO, Fla. — A state investigator who looks into teacher misconduct demanded to know who in Orange County Public Schools authorized the purchase of the book “Gender Queer,” a controversial memoir the district pulled from several high school libraries in late October, according to emails between the employee and the school district.

“This office is trying to find out who approved the book,” wrote Ian Dohme, a Florida Department of Education employee, in an email to an OCPS administrator on April 13.

Dohme’s request was alarming because he works for the department’s Office of Professional Practices, said Stephana Ferrell, an Orange County mother and co-founder of the Florida Freedom to Read Project, which uncovered the email.

ofessional practices investigates allegations of teacher misconduct and pursues disciplinary action against educators found guilty.

“That’s a huge threat,” Ferrell said.

Dohme, who wrote in another email that he was investigating how the book landed in OCPS high schools, was eventually sent purchase orders issued by four high schools that bought the book, and at least one document that included a high school media specialist’s name, according to the emails.

The boy who touched Obama's head is graduating, with the ex-president's congratulations

https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2022-05-27/barack-obama-photograph-boy-hair-pete-souza-oval-office-graduation

I say “reintroduce” because many of us “know” Jacob. We know him, however, as the 5-year-old Black boy at the center of one of the most famous photos of Barack Obama’s presidency. In the picture, the leader of the free world — the nation’s first Black president — is bowing in the Oval Office to a Black child who has just asked him whether his wiry hair is really like the boy’s own.

“Touch it, dude!” the president said, bringing his head even with the child’s, as I recounted in a story a decade ago about their encounter in 2009.

The photo that White House photographer Pete Souza hurriedly snapped, which to this day is an audience favorite in Souza’s popular speaking tours about his White House years, seemed to capture the promise inherent in Obama’s barrier-breaking election: That all Americans finally could imagine someone who looked like themselves in the nation’s highest office.

The photo represented hope and change, the bywords of Obama’s campaign. Yet now those sentiments are as faded as the iconic signs that once advertised them. And Jacob, now a young man, will soon return to the United States to attend the University of Memphis at a time when the once-heady talk of a post-racial society has given way to deep anxiety about racial regression.

Cal football legend Geoff McArthur has cancer. He's had to crowdfund medical bills

https://www.gofundme.com/f/vn23zr-lets-help-geoff-mcarthur-kick-cancer

McArthur already had his first round of chemotherapy and has more scheduled from now all the way until September. And that’s going to be expensive, especially because McArthur is in between jobs — he recently resigned as the head football coach at St. Monica Catholic High School in Santa Monica and accepted a position as the wide receivers coach at national high school football powerhouse St. John Bosco, something he describes as a “dream job.”

Thanks to a broken-for-many American health care system where health care is tied to your employment, McArthur has been forced to abruptly crowdfund his mounting medical bills. In less than 48 hours, he’s already raised more than $70,000 on a GoFundMe, with a list of donors that you could easily mistake for an early 2000s Cal roster sheet. From J.J. Arrington and Steve Levy (who left a note with his donation: “The Bear will not Quit, The Bear will not die. Love you #6”), to Langston Walker and Brian de la Puente, his former teammates jumped at the chance to be there for McArthur both financially and emotionally.

“I kept it to myself at first, I didn’t want people to know, because what can someone really do for you? They can wish you well, say they’re praying for you, but there’s not really a thing anyone can do. I didn’t want it to be a big deal. But at the same time, I got to a point where I realized I can’t do this alone,” McArthur told SFGATE via phone on Monday. “The first people I told were my girlfriend, my mom, my brother, then it was some of my Cal teammates.”

Current Cal receivers coach Burl Toler and NFL wideout DeSean Jackson were some of the first people to know. Then McArthur told Tosh Lupoi and Chase Lyman. A Cal football support group broke out, featuring Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers quarterback.

Authorities investigating if retired TX federal agent knew of Buffalo mass shooting plans in advance

Law enforcement officers are investigating whether a retired federal agent had about 30 minutes advance notice of a white supremacist's plans to murder Black people at a Buffalo supermarket, two law enforcement officials told The Buffalo News.

Authorities believe the former agent – believed to be from Texas – was one of at least six individuals who regularly communicated with accused gunman Payton Gendron in an online chat room where racist hatred was discussed, the two officials said.

The two law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation stated these individuals were invited by Gendron to read about his mass shooting plans and the target location about 30 minutes before Gendron killed 10 people at Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue on May 14.

The News could not determine if the retired agent accepted the invitation.

“These were like-minded people who used this chat group to talk about their shared interests in racial hatred, replacement theory and hatred of anyone who is Jewish, a person of color or not of European ancestry,” said one of the two law enforcement officials with close knowledge of the investigation. “What is especially upsetting is that these six people received advanced notice of the Buffalo shooting, about 30 minutes before it happened.

“The FBI has verified that none of these people called law enforcement to warn them about the shooting. The FBI database shows no advance tips from anyone that this shooting was about to happen.”

Agents from the FBI are in the process of tracking down and interviewing the six people, including the retired agent, and attempting to determine if any of them should be charged as accomplices, the two sources with close knowledge of the probe told The Buffalo News.

Switzerland has a stunningly high rate of gun ownership -- here's why it doesn't have mass shootings

Switzerland hasn't had a mass shooting since 2001, when a man stormed the local parliament in Zug, killing 14 people and then himself.

The country has about 2 million privately owned guns in a nation of 8.3 million people. In 2016, the country had 47 attempted homicides with firearms. The country's overall murder rate is near zero.

The National Rifle Association often points to Switzerland to argue that more rules on gun ownership aren't necessary. In 2016, the NRA said on its blog that the European country had one of the lowest murder rates in the world while still having millions of privately owned guns and a few hunting weapons that don't even require a permit.

But the Swiss have some specific rules and regulations for gun use.

-----------

Swiss authorities decide on a local level whether to give people gun permits. They also keep a log of everyone who owns a gun in their region, known as a canton, though hunting rifles and some semiautomatic long arms are exempt from the permit requirement.

But cantonal police don't take their duty dolling out gun licenses lightly. They might consult a psychiatrist or talk with authorities in other cantons where a prospective gun buyer has lived before to vet the person.

Swiss laws are designed to prevent anyone who's violent or incompetent from owning a gun.

People who've been convicted of a crime or have an alcohol or drug addiction aren't allowed to buy guns in Switzerland.

The law also states that anyone who "expresses a violent or dangerous attitude" won't be permitted to own a gun.

Gun owners who want to carry their weapon for "defensive purposes" also have to prove they can properly load, unload, and shoot their weapon and must pass a test to get a license.

Switzerland is also one of the richest, healthiest, and, by some measures, happiest countries in the world.
