healthy habits to ward off alzheimers: walk, play music, mediterranean style diet, sleep

You may think of Alzheimer's disease as something that impacts only your friend's grandpa, but we're learning that cognitive decline is actually shockingly common. In fact, Alzheimer's Association experts estimate that 12 to 18 percent of Americans 60 and older experience some form of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which often progresses to officially diagnosable forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease.

This week, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) fast-tracked aducanamab, the first drug that might potentially slow the progression of early-diagnosed Alzheimer's. But there's still no cure for any form of dementia, so our best bet is to do everything possible to prevent it in the first place. We've recently learned that walking three times per week, playing music and eating a Mediterranean-style diet can help keep your brain healthy as you age.

------------

Pennsylvania State University scientists discovered that sleep-dependent brain activity-the kind that occurs during deep, restful non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep-can help the body excrete toxic proteins related to Alzheimer's disease. (ICYMI, we just learned that a healthy gut can help you score more high-quality, deep sleep so be sure to load your diet with these probiotic, prebiotic and fermented foods!)

Extensive research suggests that one way Alzheimer's disease develops is when levels of the proteins amyloid-β (Aβ and tau build up in the brain. This often occurs over the course of 10 to 20 years prior to an official diagnosis. By the way, this is not the first research that hints to this brain protein burden and sleep link: In 2018, scientists found that a single night of sleep deprivation increases the Aβ load within the brain.

Levi's CEO:Number Who Need New Size 'Staggering' About 25% of buyers need either a bigger or smaller

Levi's CEO: Number Who Need New Size 'Staggering'
About 25% of buyers need either a bigger or smaller jeans size, says Chip Bergh

The pandemic didn't just change the style of jeans people are buying—skinny jeans are out and more comfortable fits are in—but something more fundamental: waist sizes. In an interview with the AP, Levi's CEO Chip Bergh estimates that 25% of customers are in need of a new size on the other side of the pandemic, either bigger or smaller.

"The number of people who are in a new size is pretty staggering," he says. "Some people gained weight during the pandemic, and many people lost weight." This applies to both men and women, he adds.

The interview caught the attention of Quartz, which notes that Bergh's comments sync with a small study from March in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers found that among 269 people, lifestyle changes amid the pandemic translated to a weight gain of 1.5 pounds per month.

And a survey for the American Psychological Association in February found that 42% of people reported an unwanted weight gain (29 pounds on average), while 18% reported an undesired weight loss (26 pounds on average).

82 year old arrested. Called Black flight attendant a racial slur, poked her, said she was "too fat"

A flight attendant was harassed and insulted for being a Black woman while working.

White Man Gets Arrested After Calling Black Flight Attendant a Racial Slur, Says She's 'Too Fat'

?resize=960%2C500&ssl=1

During a flight from Philadelphia to Fort Myers, Fla., last week, 82-year-old George Francis Alexander approached the American Airlines flight attendant, who remains unnamed, from behind as she was serving drinks. He poked her in the back and told her to move, the News-Press reports.

According to the arrest report, he then called her a racial slur. And when the flight attendant asked him to stop, he said she was “too big for this job; you’re too fat for this, overweight.”

After the plane landed at Southwest Florida International Airport, Lee County Port Authority police arrested Alexander. He was charged with suspicion of battery and interference of aircraft operations.

Alexander, of Fort Myers, was released on bail, which was set at $1,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.

Driver Gets Unpleasant Surprise During Evening Commute #NothingGoodHappensWithCicadas

https://www.newser.com/story/307117/police-blame-car-crash-on-cicada.html?utm_source=part&utm_medium=uol&utm_campaign=rss_top

what ABC News calls an "amorous" cicada flew into a vehicle's window, causing the car to crash. WLWT reports the accident took place around 6:30pm Monday, when the insect flew into the car as it was making its way along Riverside Drive and hit the driver in the face. The startled driver ended up veering off the road and smashing into a utility pole.

Per the Guardian, the driver wasn't badly hurt, though the car was badly damaged and "the cicada was declared dead [at] the scene." The Cincinnati Police Department tweeted a photo showing the crumpled black Chevy, along with the hashtag #nothinggoodhappenswithcicadas. Police are recommending that drivers in the Cincinnati area, which is experiencing the cicada reemergence full force right now, keep their windows closed for the near future.

French President Emmanuel Macron slapped by member of public

https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/08/europe/france-president-emmanuel-macron-slap-intl/index.html

French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face by a man in a crowd as he spoke to the public during a visit to southeast France on Tuesday, video of the incident posted on social media showed.

The footage, shared by CNN-affiliate BFM, showed Macron walking up to a metal fence and clasping the arm of a man in the crowd as he began to greet onlookers in the village of Tain-l'Hermitage, in the Drôme region of France.

The man, while gripping Macron's arm, then slapped the President across his left cheek while yelling for the end of "Macronie" -- a pejorative term used in the French press for Macron's presidency.

Macron's security detail quickly intervened, tackling the man while pulling the president away from the metal barrier.

Newsmax turned down embattled Republican Matt Gaetz for a job -spokesperson

WASHINGTON, June 7 (Reuters) - Conservative media outlet Newsmax, a favorite of former President Donald Trump's, rejected embattled Republican U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz's request for a job, a spokesperson for the website said on Monday.

Gaetz contacted Newsmax early this year, a source at the outlet said. That was around the time that news broke Gaetz was the subject of a federal investigation into possible sex trafficking of a minor.

------------

Spokespeople for Gaetz, a vocal Trump supporter, had no immediate comment about any Newsmax job rejection.

"Newsmax has had no plans to hire Rep. Gaetz," said Brian Peterson, a spokesperson for the website.

A source familiar with Newsmax's policies said: "Earlier this year, (Gaetz) reached out and said he might leave Congress early and was interested in TV work."

LEBANON, Va. —How far would you go to save your dog? A young boy from Lebanon set the bar to a whole another level.

Eight-year-old Bryson Kliemann is a diehard Pokémon fanatic.

He was organizing his playing cards and noticed his dog, Bruce, had fallen sick. His mother, Kimberly Woodruff, rushed the dog to Southwest Virginia Veterinary Services.

"He wasn't coming out of his cage and being the normal puppy he usually is," Woodruff said. "He was very lethargic, just not doing good."

Bruce was diagnosed with parvo, a highly contagious dog virus. The treatment cost is nearly $700. A price the family couldn't afford to pay and a puppy Bryson says he couldn't afford to lose.

------

Aware of his parents financial situation, Bryson used his love for Bruce and his passion for Pokémon to take matters in to his own hands. His plan caught his mother by surprise.

"While I'm in school I get a text message with a picture of him and a sign on the side of the road selling Pokémon cards," Woodruff said.

"I know everybody likes Pokémon cards so I just decided to sell them," Bryson said.

Los Angeles building tiny home villages for homeless

LA's first prefab tiny home village for the homeless opened this year as a 'test case' for the city — see how it's doing now
Brittany Chang May 16, 2021, 4:16 AM

In February, an unassuming and "forgotten" corner of North Hollywood, Los Angeles, was transformed into a colorful village of tiny homes run by nonprofit Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission.

Now, 43 residents call the Chandler Street Tiny Home Village their (temporary) home, just a few months after the community's February grand opening.

Lehrer Architects, which designed the tiny home community with the city's Bureau of Engineering, had a $3.49 million budget for the project. But foundational work — including street leveling and sewer lines — became the most expensive component of the project.

The nonprofit has already opened its second tiny home village, pictured below, about two miles away from the initial community, riding off of the success of the Chandler site.

Third Tiny Home Village For Homeless Population To Open In San Fernando Valley

The nonprofit Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission and Los Angeles City Councilman Bob Blumenfield partnered to create the tiny home community, consisting of 52 units and 100 beds, expected to open on June 8.

“We know there needs to be more permanent housing, but we cannot have people just living on the streets until then,” said Rowan Vansleve, chief finance and administrative officer for Hope of the Valley.

The village is not meant to be a long-term solution for the residents. The average length of stay is about six months before the residents are placed in a more permanent place to live, according to Vansleve.

Most of the units have two beds and all are equipped with an air conditioning unit and a heater. Most importantly, each tiny home has a lock.

“For someone who has been a victim of violence, especially women who have been on the street, they walk into a congregate shelter with other people, that becomes another barrier,” Vansleve said. “These tiny homes have that magical locking door. That is the key to get these women off the street.”

Canada: Driver deliberately plows into Muslim family

Muslim grandmother, 74, father, 46, mother, 44, and daughter, 15, are killed and brother, 9, is injured by driver who plowed his Dodge Ram into them in Canada after targeting them over their faith

Four members of the same family were killed and a nine-year-old boy injured when they were hit by a truck

The Muslim family were out for an evening stroll on Sunday in London, Ontario when the Dodge Ram crashed

Nathaniel Veltman, 20, is accused of deliberately ramming his pickup truck into them on account of their faith
Veltman is charged with four counts of murder and could face additional charges of terrorism and hate crime
The family immigrated from Pakistan 14 years ago and were well-known in the local community
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was 'horrified' by the 'despicable' attack on the family

Detective Supt. Paul Waight said Veltman was wearing a vest that appeared to be like body armor.

Waight said police did not know at this point if the suspect was a member of any specific hate group.

He said London police are working with federal police and prosecutors to see about potential terrorism charges.

He declined to detail evidence pointing to a possible hate crime, but said the attack was planned.

Their Venice home feels unsafe. They blame public officials, not homeless Angelenos

When Arthur and Rini Kraus bought their condo 19 years ago in Venice, every day was a postcard from paradise.

They took long walks, enjoyed gazing across open sea from their patio, and strolled to nearby restaurants for dinner. The neighborhood was funky, and even a bit sketchy, but their four sons and grandchildren were happy to drop by, and the beach was their playground.

A little over a decade ago, things began to change. The neighborhood took on some harder edges, more people began camping along the boardwalk, and the Krauses no longer felt as safe as they once had.

“I’d say it really exploded about three years ago,” said Arthur.

Tents multiplied, and the beach became an open-air clinic for the poor, the addicted and those in physical or mental distress.

“I see people wake up, lower their pants and go to the bathroom,” Rini said. “The beach is supposed to be for everybody.”

“I can’t even have my grandchildren here now,” said Arthur.
