Anxiety Grows Over Anti-Immigrant Actions: 'We Feel They Are After Us'

"We have people walking in, in crisis, emotionally and mentally. We have people calling," says Mia Fioritto Rubin, director of immigration legal services at World Relief Chicago. "We have people just desperate for an answer, and they tell us, 'I just can't be at peace until I know that my family member is coming. I can't be at peace until I know that I'm allowed to stay.' "

And Rubin says the organization's clients who are worried are not just those here illegally or waiting to gain legal status.

"We have had a wave of elderly people coming to us, who have had green cards for decades, who are all of a sudden very concerned that that green card will be taken away from them, and [they] are hoping to apply for citizenship," she says.

"We have people who have already naturalized and have been citizens for years who have come back to us and asked, 'Could this be taken away from me?' " she adds. "The fear is there for every single person who was not born on American soil, and even some people who were born here, but to immigrant families, there is the concern that somehow, some way, they're going to be forced to leave."

The biggest fear, says Rubin, is the uncertainty of not knowing what's coming next. That, she says, is making it difficult for immigrants and their families to build their lives and is impacting their ability to feel settled.

With new policies and procedures being implemented in what she calls a "capricious way," she says that fear can lead to panic, which can have significant health impacts.

Pro-Trump "Deplorable" store shuts down after two days

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pro-trump-deplorable-store-shuts-down-after-two-days/

A pro-Trump store in upstate New York called the "Team Deplorable Community Activity Center" – whose owner planned to turn the shop into a national support center for the president's agenda – has closed after just two days.

The store vanished as suddenly as it had appeared this week in Webster, a village outside of Rochester, CBS affiliate WROC reports. In its two-day lifespan, the store drew an Independence Day protest and fierce social media backlash while its owner tried to raise $150,000. All the while, it sold little more than T-shirts and hats that had no connection to Trump.

The owner, Bruce Ben-Dov, had called himself the "CEO of Team Deplorable.

----

Ben-Dov said he wanted the store to be a "peaceful" place where fellow Trump supporters could "voice our opinion." He spoke of ambitions to add a coffee shop, a speakers corner and a political action center for President Donald Trump and pro-Trump candidates. He told the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester that he had a lease for two years.

But the business only lasted two days. A GoFundMe page that Ben-Dov created to raise $150,000 received only $240 in donations before closing. By Thursday, the whole shop was shuttered, with all of its merchandise gone.

Ben-Dov, 51, told WROC that he "ran out of money" and didn't want to open himself to legal liability. He apparently already had money troubles, as Amex had sued him in June for allegedly not paying a credit card balance of nearly $11,000.

Ben-Dov, who says he is a U.S. Army veteran, did not return a request for comment from CBS News.

"Jim Jordan should get what he denies others: The benefit of the doubt"

Jim Jordan should get what he denies others: The benefit of the doubt

The chief justice of the US court of public opinion is himself in the hot seat and facing uncomfortable allegations of serious wrongdoing.

On Tuesday, NBC News published a report indicating the fiery Rep. Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, stands accused of turning a blind eye to alleged acts of molestation by a doctor working for the wrestling team Jordan assistant-coached at The Ohio State University.

---

A chief problem for Jordan is that he now finds himself in the unenviable position of proving a negative, assuring the public and his constituents that he did not know about the alleged abuse.

His problem is exacerbated by the fact that he is so often known as a political firebrand who frequently leaps to conclusions while investigations are still underway. Take, for example, his central role in drawing conclusions from disparate pieces of information about surveillance abuse and suggesting the FBI was out to get President c Trump, even while a DOJ inspector general investigation looking into these allegations had not yet been completed.

If we were to apply Jordan's standard of drawing conclusions without full facts, it would be hard to simply accept his full-throated denial in the Ohio State molestation matter.

With that said, and even though Jordan appears to operate on a different set of standards than he wishes himself to be judged, we should not engage in the type of character assassination that has made him famous.

Trump's approval has actually been the most stable of any president in polling history,

Sure, 45 percent, or his current 42 percent, is higher than Trump’s April low of 38 percent, or his all-time Gallup low, last seen in December, of 35 percent. But his numbers have held within a very narrow range since his inauguration. Indeed, Trump’s approval has actually been the most stable of any president in polling history, as this chart from Charles Franklin shows:

GOP Rep. Jim Jordan to Call Cops Over Sex Abuse Victim's 'Bullying' Emails

https://www.thedailybeast.com/gop-rep-jim-jordan-to-call-cops-over-sex-abuse-victims-bullying-emails

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has reportedly decided to enlist the help of Capitol Hill police after receiving emails from a man who says he suffered sexual abuse during Jordan’s time as an assistant coach at Ohio State University. Several former wrestlers accused Jordan of turning a blind eye to the abuse during his time at the school, saying he had been informed directly of inappropriate touching by the team doctor. Jordan has denied ever being aware of the allegations, and now says he believes one of the alleged victims, Mike DiSabato, is “bullying him” with emails, according to CNN. DiSabato publicly accused Jordan of lying about being unaware of the abuse on Tuesday. A day later, a source within Jordan’s office told CNN that the Ohio Republican intends to get police involved after receiving numerous emails from DiSabato over the course of a few months. The emails were described as vaguely threatening, though no details were provided on their content.

3 former wrestlers say Jim Jordan was told about team doctor's sexual misconduct

Powerful Republican Pulled Into Ohio State Molestation Scandal
3 former wrestlers say Jim Jordan was told about team doctor's sexual misconduct

Former wrestler Dunyasha Yetts says he went straight to Jordan after Strauss began to remove his wrestling shorts when he sought help for a thumb injury. He said Jordan and then-head coach Russ Hellickson spoke with Strauss, who the New York Times reports committed suicide in 2005. Yetts says it was far from the only discussion players had with Jordan, and that it was commonly known Strauss showered with players though he didn't work out.

Mike DiSabato, another player who spoke with NBC News, got detailed in an interview with CNN: "I never saw Doc Strauss ... where he didn't ask me to—where I went to see him for medicine or whatever, finger injury, shoulder, knee—where he did not want to examine my testicles. He groped. Every time. If you wanted your meds, if you wanted to stay healthy ... so that you could stay on scholarship, you grinned and beared it, so to speak."

CNN says male members from 14 of the university's sports teams—among them baseball, fencing, football, swimming, and track—have levied allegations against Strauss per Ohio State. Some 150 people have been interviewed as part of the probe.
