A Republican Lawmaker Said "Not Her Body, Not Her Choice" Before Indiana Passed A Near-Total Abortio

A Republican Lawmaker Said “Not Her Body, Not Her Choice” Before Indiana Passed A Near-Total Abortion Ban
“The body inside of the mom’s body is not her body. Not her body, not her choice,” said Rep. John Jacob, an anti-abortion extremist who wanted to remove exceptions for rape and incest from the bill.

Republican House Rep. John Jacob, an anti-abortion extremist who wanted to remove all exceptions from the bill, including those for rape and incest, declared that an abortion was not a woman’s choice.

“The body inside of the mom’s body is not her body,” Jacob said on Friday. “Let me repeat that: The body inside of the mom’s body is not her body. Not her body, not her choice.”

Jacob, who was among a handful of Republicans who voted against the bill because it did not go far enough, said, “Trying to end all abortion is not forced birth, but rather it is trying to end murdering children,” the Washington Post reported.

Responding in anger to his remarks on the floor, Democratic House Rep. Renee Pack, said, “Sir, I am not a murderer. And my sisters are not murderers, either. We are pro-choice. That is what we are. We believe that we have command over our own bodies. That's who we are.”

Library Officer Is Killed During Safety Training

Library Officer Is Killed During Safety Training
Retired police officer in DC was showing her and others how to use extendable batons

A retired police lieutenant enlisted to teach library officers how to use extendable batons shot and killed one of his pupils in Washington, DC, on Thursday, according to police. Jesse Porter, 58, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Maurica Manyan, 25, of Indian Head, Md., a police rep tells the Washington Post.

Metropolitan Police said Porter, a professional trainer who retired from the police department in November 2020, was contracted by the Anacostia Neighborhood Library in southeast Washington to provide training to officers on the use of extendable batons and it wasn't clear why a live firearm was involved, let alone used.

Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said Manyan was shot toward the end of the training session as she, Porter, and about four other library police officers were gathered in a meeting room. "The instructor discharged a single round from a firearm which struck the decedent," according to a police statement.

"Not sure, in this situation, why the trainer had a live weapon in a training environment but it’s not good practice to do that," Contee added at a press conference. Manyan wasn't breathing when police responded to the scene shortly after 3:30pm and was later pronounced dead at a hospital, per WTTG. Police said Porter was arrested and charged later Thursday after "consultation with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia."

Women in red state where abortion is now banned..waking up. Is it too late?

Abortion wasn’t on the ballot in Tennessee, but it was on the minds of voters
BLAKE FARMER AUGUST 5, 2022

After waiting in line for more than an hour, Jacqueline Smith voted at a recreation center in Spring Hill with one thing on her mind — Tennessee’s fleeting abortion access.

Smith wants to unseat Gov. Bill Lee, who pushed through the state’s abortion ban kicking in later this month.

“In every single reason I vote, that is behind it. I will never vote for someone — Democrat, Independent or Republican — who tells me I don’t have a right to govern my own body. Even if everyone around me disagrees,” she says, noting how Republicans tend to dominate politics in Williamson County.

Smith says she was surprised how many people in line asked for a Democrat ballot, like she did. They included Cathy Matheny, who voted just ahead of Smith, while wearing a black tank top with the word “vote” overlaid on images from “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

“You just hide in the wings and come vote,” Matheny says.

Farther south in Maury County, 19-year-old Hannah Boaz cast her first vote, largely off recommendations from her family members. But that complicated voting for Republicans, since most running for office don’t express support for abortion at any stage of pregnancy.

“I, personally, don’t like [abortion]. But I do believe that there are certain situations that I think it should be available,” Boaz says.

Boaz says she feels like there’s not much she can do at this point. Abortion is going to be criminalized with almost no exceptions, and the state legislature does not appear eager to scale back the law.
