Someone is dumping dozens of well cared for dogs in West Texas. Rescue groups struggle to keep up

Dozens of dogs are being dumped in West Texas and rescue groups are struggling to keep up

Along a lonely stretch of West Texas roads, dozens of dogs have been dumped during the past three months. These dogs range in size, age and breed, but they share a few traits.

All 49 of these dogs were found on roads just off Interstate 10 between Sonora and Junction. Most seemed well cared for and happy when rescuers picked them off the side of the road. Some were dead from being hit by cars.

None were microchipped, but rescuers believe these dogs belonged to someone.

"You can tell they've been cared for. ... Wherever they're coming from, they were being tended to," said Wheless Baker, one of several rescuers, in a previous interview. "You can see where collars were removed."

Cow Dog Rescue, a rescue organization from San Angelo, has stepped up to organize fosters, veterinary visits and care for these dogs. But after three rounds of over 10 dogs, they aren't sure how long they can keep up.

"We are drowning in unwanted dogs and aren’t sure how long we can keep this up," according to a post from the rescue. "We will do everything in our power not only to save these dogs, but bring whoever is dumping them to justice."

Law enforcement will put out no dumping signs in the areas, according to Cow Dog Rescue.

The first dumping had 17 dogs found on July 7 near I-10 on Baker Road and Harrell Road, part of a 55-mile stretch of land that separates Sonora and Junction. Three days later, four more dogs were found, bringing the total to 21. A month later, another 14 were left in the same area.

Eno the emu dies during capture. 'Everyone is devastated' by bird's death, official says

Eno the emu, the large flightless bird that evaded authorities for months, collapsed while being captured Thursday and died, officials said.

According to Orange County Animal Services, authorities worked with an avian veterinarian and two specialists from the N.C. Zoo to sedate the bird to transport it to a sanctuary.

But the sedatives didn’t work, and it died while being restrained.

“We did all we knew to do,” Animal Services Director Bob Marotto said in a news release. “We consulted with zoo experts to determine the best course. Unfortunately, she did not respond to our efforts.”

A group of officers and specialists arrived in the area of Rogers and Eubanks roads in northern Chapel Hill around 10 a.m. Thursday. They administered sedatives to the emu via grapes and bananas at 11 a.m., waited for the sedatives to kick in and eventually tried restraining the estimated 100-pound bird.

The emu collapsed and, despite group members administering CPR, it died, possibly of a stress-induced heart attack, officials said.

“Everyone is devastated,” Marotto said in the release.

Authorities had tried to capture the bird since the first sightings in June, worried it might endanger itself and others in a traffic accident or in the upcoming deer hunting season.

“We didn’t feel leaving it alone was a viable option,” Marotto said in the release.

The 5-foot tall emu had already caused some trouble on the road a month ago, jumping on the hood of a car near Hillsborough before running into the woods.

Animal Services officers closed in on the bird in mid-August, after leaving out buckets of food and water. They had even gotten as close as one person feeding it out of their hand.

No one reported missing an emu. Tenille Fox, Animal Services spokesperson, said they were hoping to take it to The Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary in Rougemont in northern Durham County

Calif.winery aplologizes for refusing to host gay wedding

The owner of Viaggio Winery in Lodi is apologizing after receiving backlash for refusing to host a Sacramento couple's gay wedding.

"I am sincerely sorry to have caused anyone pain at a time that should be joyous," owner Teri Lawrence said in a statement.

According to Dezanea Reyes, she and her fiancée Alex Biddle, reached out to the wedding venue for their upcoming wedding.

She said she received an email response from Viaggio that read in part, "While Viaggio Winery welcomes your business, we have never hosted a same-sex marriage." The email said the owner has "a very strong personal religious belief regarding marriage, which is for marriage to be between heterosexual couples only."

Instead of hosting Reyes and Bittle's ceremony, the winery offered to host the cocktail hour, dinner and reception. The winery would not host the wedding ceremony itself because it would violate the owners' personal religious beliefs.

Personal trainer tells woman she's 'way too heavy' for his class

A 350-pound woman was rejected by a personal trainer who said she was “way too heavy” for his fitness class.

Lisa Parratt, 33, was mortified when workout instructor Gary Randall, who goes by the moniker “Buffmaster,” told her that she was “just too big” for his boot camp program at UK-based gym Slimming World, which Parratt joined earlier this year.

The response over Facebook Messenger was devastating to Parratt, who has fought to lose 35 pounds since January. When she noted that to Randall, he replied that she still has “at least six months” more before qualifying for his course.

His comments are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, to make matters worse.

“I’m sorry to say I won’t be able to help you at bootcamp,” wrote Randall. “Your way to heavy now.”

Parratt then asked the obvious: If he’s a personal trainer, can’t he “help people lose weight?” He responded, “Yes I do but you gone to far.” He then added, “Focus on the gym for at least six months then let’s see where your at.”

Not buying it, Parratt asked again for his “reasoning.”

“Your just to big for my bootcamp that’s all,” he said. “If you lose about five stone of fat [70 pounds] [I’ll] be able to help you achieve your goals.”

Parratt, who has anxiety and an emotional support dog to help her, told The Sun, “I don’t hide from my weight but I do expect a professional [person] delivering a professional service to give a better response than that. Why didn’t he come over and have a quiet word with me when he saw me?”

After spending a “night in tears” over the embarrassment, she ultimately decided to post the exchange on Facebook to “raise awareness.”

“I was worried that if he said something like that to the wrong person, they might not be here now,” she said. “I wanted to raise awareness so I posted it on Sunday night a few hours after his message.”

Randall also took to Facebook to defend what he calls an “honest” approach to his work.

“Always best to be honest in my business sometimes brutally #teambuffmaster.”

Randall also talked to The Sun: “She is a very silly woman. She is the one making herself look a fool.”

In short, Twitter says Nunes has no right to see the names after the Fresno resident filed his lawsuit in Virginia.

Would Any Father Refer to Their Son the Way Trump Referred to Barron?

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/father-refer-son-way-trump-144559171.html

John Lennon referred to his son Sean Lennon as a “Beautiful Boy” in the excellent song of the same name. For many of us, children are what happens when we’re busy making other plans; but what about Donald Trump? President Donald Trump certainly makes a lot of plans — many of which anger parents — but why did he refer to his “beautiful” son Barron in such a bizarre way? In other words, why would any father refer to his son the way Trump referred to Barron?

On Wednesday, in a press conference about the dangers of vape companies and e-cigarette brands targeting teens, Trump said: “We can’t have our youth be so affected, and I’m hearing it, and that’s how the First Lady got involved. She’s got a son, together, that’s a beautiful young man, and she feels very, very strongly about it.”

Okay, so props for calling Barron a “beautiful young man.” Way to channel some John Lennon vibes. Let’s all sit with that for a second.

But wait. What the hell is going on with the rest of this? Trump is famous for bizarre statements, but this one seems to take the prize for most detached. It’s like a robot who doesn’t speak English was required to translate for an English-speaking toddler. If I were to start talking like Trump, relative to my daughter, here’s the kind of stuff I would be saying.

“My wife has a beautiful daughter.”

“We took a girl to daycare today. My wife’s beautiful daughter. She’s very happy about it.”

“The day my wife’s daughter was born was the happiest day of my life. I really liked it.”

You get the point. Dads generally don’t refer to their biological children as their wife’s children. That’s usually something you’d say to indicate the child is not yours. One could argue it’s not inaccurate per se, presumably Barron is Melania Trump’s son, but still. Pretty freaking weird.

Most of the rest of the world noticed the gaff too. Here are some of the best reactions.

couple legally changed adopted girl's age from 8 to 22, rented her an apartment and moved away

https://www.wlfi.com/content/news/Prosecutors-Couple-abandons-child-in-Lafayette-changes-her-age-flees-to-Canada-560145341.html

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A couple has been charged in a years-long investigation, accused of abandoning a girl in a Lafayette apartment and then leaving for Canada. Prosecutors say Michael and Kristine Barnett also legally changed the Ukranian girl's presumed age from 8-years-old to 22-years-old.

"This is going to end up on a TV show," a law enforcement officer told News 18 Thursday.

The investigation began five years ago. In Sept. 2014, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office was contacted by a school principal about a student. Officers spoke to the girl who said she had a form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal.

The girl told police she was adopted by the Barnetts in 2010. Court documents, filed Wednesday, said the family lived in Hamilton County for two years. Then, the girl told police the Barnetts rented an apartment on North 11th Street in Lafayette, left her alone and then moved with the rest of the family to Canada.

Before they left, prosecutors say the Barnetts had the girl's age legally changed to 22. The process by which her age was changed remains unclear. According to court documents, Kristine Barnett, also known as Kristine Pearson, told the girl to tell others she just "looks young." A law enforcement source told News 18 that "neighbors took her under their wing" and are cooperating in the investigation.

The couple admitted when interviewed Thursday Sept. 5, 2019 that they did not financially support the girl, other than paying rent, after leaving her in the apartment. They also admitted to changing the girl's age in June of 2012.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI/CNN) - Police are searching for an Indiana couple wanted on neglect charges amid accusations they abandoned their 8-year-old adopted daughter.

After a five-year investigation, authorities on Wednesday filed charges against Michael and Kristine Barnett. They reportedly adopted a girl from Ukraine in 2010.

Officials say the couple set the girl up in an apartment in Lafayette and then moved to Canada.

They also say the couple changed the girl's legal age from 8 to 22 years old and told people she had a form of dwarfism.

Police are asking for the public's help.

A police source says the girl’s neighbors stepped in to help care for her. They are also cooperating with the investigation.

Philadelphia's top cop apologizes for wearing shirt that mocked Rodney King beating

Philadelphia’s interim police commissioner has apologized for wearing a T-shirt in the 1990s that mocked the notorious Los Angeles police beating of Rodney King, saying she’s “profoundly sorry.”

?quality=90&strip=all&w=618&h=410&crop=1

The photo, from 1994, shows Christine M. Coulter, who is white, wearing a shirt that read: “L.A.P.D We Treat You Like a King,” a pointed slogan stemming from the 1991 videotaped beating of King by LAPD cops, whose acquittals sparked riots a year later.

An anonymous source sent the photo to the Philadelphia Inquirer in late August. Coulter, the first female commissioner of the 6,500-member department, said during a city council hearing Tuesday that wearing it was a “careless decision,” the Inquirer reports.

“I should have known,” Coulter said, referencing how the shirt may have been interpreted. “I am profoundly sorry that anything I would’ve done could’ve caused such hurt.”

Coulter said she wore the shirt at a gathering of cops at a hotel in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, sometime in 1994 and insisted she “never even thought of it as anything other than an LAPD shirt,” according to the newspaper.

But one city councilwoman was unmoved by that explanation and called on Coulter to “step down immediately” in a letter she wrote to Mayor Jim Kenney, prompting cheers from the audience in the packed hearing, WCAU reports.

60 year old deputy city attorney kills self, wife and 19 year old son today.

A 60-year-old deputy city attorney and his wife and adult son were killed Wednesday in what authorities are describing as a probable murder-suicide.

About 9:15 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department received a call about a “family disturbance” in suburban Northridge in the 9600 block of Vanalden Avenue and found three people had been shot and killed, said LAPD Officer Christopher No.

Detectives have recovered two guns at the scene.

On Wednesday afternoon, Los Angeles City Atty. Mike Feuer’s office released a statement confirming that Deputy City Atty. Eric Lertzman, who joined the office in 2005, was involved in the incident.

“This is a horrible tragedy,” Feuer said in the statement. “As we search for answers to how this could happen, we mourn the victims and envelop those left behind with our love during this time of unbearable loss. Of course we will provide members of our city attorney family with needed counseling and support.”

The deceased included Lertzman’s wife Sandra, 60, and his son Michael, 19, whose deaths authorities reported as homicides, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. Police reported Eric Lertzman’s death as a suicide.

Neighbors told KABC-TV Channel 7 that a father shot his wife and son, but that his daughter managed to escape through a bathroom window and call police.

Neighbor Greg Demos told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that the woman ran to his home in her pajamas and said that her father had tried to shoot her.
