A UC Berkeley fraternity house was allegedly targeted in an antisemitic hate crime over the weekend, officials said.
The Berkeley Police Department said someone called to report a hate crime around 1 a.m. on Saturday. The police said a group of college-aged students had thrown dozens of crawfish at the Alpha Epsilon Pi house and through its windows.
Alpha Epsilon Pi, at 2430 Piedmont Ave., is a Jewish fraternity. Jewish people who keep a kosher diet do not eat shellfish, according to Jewish dietary law.
The group who allegedly vandalized the building comprised six people, the fraternity said in a statement posted to social media. The fraternity said it believes throwing non-kosher food at the house was intentional, noting the incident took place on the first Shabbat of the school year.

Former VP at San Francisco tech company stole nearly $3M, feds allege
'--'
Aubrey Shelton, who joined the on-demand car repair platform in June 2013, now faces charges of bank fraud, wire fraud and tax evasion for the alleged embezzlement. On Aug. 15, a federal grand jury in San Francisco handed down the indictment, which says Shelton, if convicted, would pay at least $2.7 million and see prison time.
--------
Shelton joined RepairPal as a senior accountant and was promoted within a year to financial controller and then, in 2016, to vice president of finance. The indictment says he was discharged in May 2022, but Sheltons publicly accessible LinkedIn says he worked at RepairPal until May 2023. He is not listed on RepairPal's website as a member of the executive team; he was featured on the website in November 2021, according to the Wayback Machine.
Prosecutors accuse Shelton of carrying out a litany of financial crimes and embezzlement techniques from November 2013 to December 2021, when the firm stopped using the payroll processor ADP. Just months after starting at RepairPal, Shelton allegedly increased his pay from $3,041 to $6,250 per paycheck using his login to the firms ADP account.
Then, prosecutors allege, he switched to giving himself tax-free $5,000 mileage reimbursement payments twice a month and then tacked on some tax-free executive loan payments as well. He allegedly made $1.5 million from the fake executive loans and then almost $1 million from fake misc reimbursement payments, all while submitting false income tax returns and falsifying company records for the firms auditor.

A federal judge has sentenced Mark Ridley-Thomas, once a towering figure in Los Angeles politics, to 42 months in prison, marking a shameful final chapter in his long career as a local power broker and advocate for civil rights and racial equity.
The decision was made Monday morning by U.S. District Judge Dale S. Fischer, an appointee of George W. Bush who presided over Ridley-Thomas criminal trial in March. In addition to serving the 3 1/2 years in prison, the former politician was fined $30,000 and will be subject to three years of supervised release.
Ridley-Thomas motive was to benefit his son and himself ... he was willing to betray the trust placed in him by the community to do so, Fischer said in court.
Jurors had convicted Ridley-Thomas of seven felonies bribery, conspiracy, four counts of honest services wire fraud, and one count of honest services mail fraud in a scheme in which he extracted benefits from USC for himself and his son while on L.A. Countys powerful Board of Supervisors. The jury acquitted Ridley-Thomas of 12 other charges related to a scholarship and a professorship that his son, Sebastian, received from USC.

Much-hyped biography of Tucker Carlson struggles to sell
Tucker by Chadwick Moore sells just 3,227 copies in first week after publication on 1 August, Publishers Weekly figures reveal
Carlson cooperated with his biographer, giving extensive interviews. Moore promised to tell Carlsons side of the story regarding his shock ejection by Fox last April, in the aftermath of a $787.5m settlement between the rightwing network and Dominion Voting Systems, regarding the broadcast of Donald Trumps election fraud lies.
In the book, Carlson says he knows he was removed from the air as a condition of the settlement. Fox News and Dominion both strongly deny that.
Moores biography contains much more on Carlsons controversial career as a face of the American hard right, much of it trailed or reported on by outlets including the Guardian.
Striking passages include Carlson denying being racist but saying to be so is not a crime, and the hosts defence of using the word cunt, a preference which came up in the Dominion case regarding a description of Sidney Powell, a lawyer advising Trump about supposed electoral fraud.

ORLANDO, Fla. About a dozen parents and supporters gathered outside Orange County Public Schools downtown headquarters to announce the start of Parenting with Pride, a new program launched by Equality Florida to combat conservative organizations like Moms for Liberty, which have pushed for new laws and policies that progressive activists fear have already begun to harm LGBTQ and minority students.
This is what Florida families really look like, said Brandon Wolf, spokesperson for Equality Florida as he gestured to the group of people with varying races, gender identities, sexualities and immigration statuses who had come to support the new initiative. For years, parents and families just like the ones behind me have been under assault. Politicians have waged war on these families turning their classrooms into political battlefields and descending school districts into utter chaos. But today marks a turning of the tide. Today marks a rise in the resistance against that agenda.
A handful of parents spoke for the more than 1,000 families Wolf said have already joined the group across the state. They called for protection for LGBTQ students and teachers, an end to book bans and for the implementation of school curriculums that teach history truthfully.

ANSONIA, Ohio (WDTN) An Ansonia Police Officer was arrested after allegedly attacking an 8-year-old boy.
Christian Idle has been with the Ansonia Police Department for six years. Mackenzie Bell and her two sons have been living with him for the last three months. She said they have been getting used to becoming a blended family and calling Darke County home.
----
I was out in our garage. I was on the phone, on hold, just kind of trying to get my stuff together. And slowly the kids kept coming out to the garage and saying, Hey, Christian wants to know this, Christian wants to know that,' Bell explained.
She said Idle came into the garage and claimed her 8-year-old son had lied about something. He said she needed to get her son out of the house.
He instantly walks back in the house and I follow behind him. And by the time I can get all the way in the house, Officer Idle is on top of my 8-year-old son, kicking him and punching him, Bell said.
-------
Hes bruised literally all the way around his bottom torso, so his hips, his legs, his butt. Everything is so bruised at this point, that you cant even see what the real color of his skin is, Bell explained.

At 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 2, when Assistant Principal Danny Guidry walked past the high school library in Granbury, Texas, he saw two figures moving in the darkened interior.
There were flashing lights from the phones looking at some books, he later reported in an email to the district office made public by a parents open records request.
Guidry entered and asked if he could be of assistance. He informed the two they were in a restricted part of the building.
It was dark and difficult to see, he wrote. One of the ladies identified herself as Karen Lowery, Board Trustee.
Lowery is indeed a member of the Granbury Independent School District board. Security video would show that she and another woman, Carolyn Reeves, had entered the library an hour and a half earlier, around 8 a.m., repeatedly switching the lights off when a motion detector turned them on

Queens Doctor Charged With Drugging and Assaulting Patients on Camera
Zhi Alan Cheng, a former doctor at a prominent New York hospital, recorded dozens of videos as he raped and sexually abused women, prosecutors said.
Aug. 7, 2023
The grim accusation rocked a major New York City hospital late last year: An emerging gastroenterologist had been charged with first-degree rape. Prosecutors said he had drugged a girlfriend and filmed the assault at his apartment.
The doctor, Zhi Alan Cheng, 33, was fired from the medical center, NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, in December after his arrest.
Then, when investigators searched his electronic devices, they uncovered a disturbing stash: dozens of short videos showing Mr. Cheng sexually abusing other women at his home in Astoria and at the hospital where he worked, prosecutors said.
On Monday, Mr. Cheng was charged with 50 new counts, including rape, sexual abuse, assault, misdemeanor drug possession and unlawful surveillance, in criminal court in Queens. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.
