This is it. Kiev under siege. This weekend will decide it.

According to news reports, the Russians have fought their way into Kiev, closing a pincer movement to the north of the city.

The Ukrainians are fighting back FEROCIOUSLY and HEROICALLY, ironically kinda' like the Russians at Stalingrad.

Hey Vlad, crack open a book and read about the Germans and Stalingrad!

PS the defenders won.

But anyways... I digress.

This thing is going to be "over" one way or another this weekend.

If the Russians are driven out, they're done.

If the Ukrainians are killed and captured, beaten into submission they're done, other than guerilla resistance across the country.

But this is it. 72 hrs.

The harder the grind... the better the chances are the Russians high tail and leave.

Random thoughts about Russia, Nazis and NATO.

Even today... the Russians play the "Nazi Card" constantly.

"You're a NAZI, he's a NAZI, they're ALL NAZIS!"

What's this all about?

Just so happens this is one of my interests.

May I direct you to one of my favorite books, "Between Giants: The Battle for the Baltics in World War II" by Prit Buttar

It lays down some history.

Let's start with today.

There is precisely ONE nation in the world with a State sanctioned memorial to SS soldiers and even a Holiday where they're remembered.

Estonia.

They celebrate "The Battle of the Tannenberg Line" also called the "Battle of the European SS". It was a battle in 1944 where the Soviet army rolled across the Estonia border through Narva and ran into a series of hills called Sinimaed that was bristling with SS Volunteers from Estonia, Netherlands, Norway and others...

Bottom line, several thousand SS soldiers bottled up 200,000 Russians for weeks, inflicting huge damages on the Russians.

Interesting FYI, the Allies trusted the Estonian SS soldiers o much that they made them the security detail for the Nuremberg Trials.

Fast forward to the post-USSR days and YUP Estonia recognizes the SS Volunteers and they even had a parade each year at least as of a few years ago.

This is emblematic of "Nazis" and Russians today.

Today, in Europe... NAZI affiliations are NOT a sign of any love for Hitler or the Holocaust or such thing, it's an anti-Russian thing. The AZOV Battalion in Ukraine? Anti-Russian, not pro-Hitler.

This infuriates Russia. Russia hates it when Estonia celebrates the "Heroes of Sinimaed".

So Putins "DeNazification" comment can be readily translated to mean "Anti-Russians".

This is a very complex topic and isn't as obvious as it first seems.

75 years later and Russia is STILL waking up at 3AM looking for the "NAZI" boogeyman hiding under their bed.

It's times like this that I miss President Obama

I like Joe and think he's doing a fine job thus far...

But I and many others have fond memories of Barack Obama. What's that expression, "cool as the back side of the pillow"??

Nothing flustered the guy. He was quite literally the smartest guy in the room in most cabinet meetings. He had a way of addressing the public that reassured folks... sometimes I just wish he'd go on TV and just say "Everything's going to be OK". People would believe him and take a few deep breaths.

No Drama Obama.

Unflappable and fearless. Brilliant and intimately familiar with EVERYTHING in his orbit.

Reuters: Trump Social Media Platform to launch Monday on the App Store

Former President Donald Trump's new social media platform is set to be released in the Apple App Store on Monday, Reuters reported.

In October, Trump announced he was launching the platform, called Truth Social, to "stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech." It's being launched under the recently created Trump Media & Technology Group, under which former GOP Rep. Devin Nunes serves as chief executive.

I think the administrations "Russia on the verge of invading" is a stroke of geniius

Reverse Psychology.

Biden says "Russia going to invade Ukraine"

Putin says "No, I'm not..."

DoD says "Invasion imminent"

Next day, the Kremlin spokesperson (their version of Psaki) said:

"Maybe the Americans can advise me of the "Invasion Days" so I can plan my vacations and time off?"

Then Snowden comes out and mocks the "invasion talk" on Twitter...

See? The harder that the West says "Russia will invade"... they less likely they are to actually doing it.

Literally... to "win"... Putin won't invade, just to spite Biden.

Silly geopolitical theater.

lol...

Hypothetical question about when people are arrested for making threats vs Gov't officials.

Latest one today, the PA guy threatening the Governor.

But since I'm not an attorney... what's required to make the indictment? To charge the individual with a crime?

Is ability to carry out the crime a consideration?

If a 92 year old man in a wheelchair threatens to beat up someone, maybe "The Rock", is it a chargeable offense?

What is someone scribbles on a piece of paper with tanks and rockets striking someone's house?

Or laser beams?

What if someone threatens to build a gigawatt laser and fly it in a drone (lol... physics) and zap someone...

Is that an offense?

How about voodoo dolls? A crime? If you livestream it on FB?

See where I'm going?

Does a prosecutor have to prove INTENT and ABILITY to commit the crime?

Or even the possibility for harm or lack thereof?

I DO know that the SS interviewed quite a few people during Shrub and Obama and usually asked 2-3 questions then left without a second thought... the stories were out there...

Palin v NYT was just the start... chilling Slate article.

We all know the story, Palin roundly defeated in Court.

There's MORE to the story.

Readers Digest version: The attorney behind the destruction of Gawker attended the trial each day taking copious notes. Slate then suggests that the Palin team of attorneys may be paid by Peter Thiel, possibly to get this in front of a Supreme Court where TWO Justices have already said "NYT v Sullivan needs to be re-examined"

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2022/02/sarah-palin-loses-new-york-times-lawsuit-verdict.html

Sitting in the observer section at the trial—along with Sarah Palin’s boyfriend, James Bennet’s wife, a bunch of journalists, and a few curious members of the public—there was one especially intriguing figure. Charles Harder was the lead attorney when Hulk Hogan sued Gawker out of existence. And Harder watched every minute of the testimony in this trial, taking copious notes on a legal pad. He wasn’t working with Palin’s legal team (though he’d worked with them before, in that Gawker case). He was just watching.

During breaks in the proceedings, I peppered Harder with questions. How much did he think this trial was costing Palin? Answer: More than $1 million. How much would it cost to take the case all the way to the Supreme Court? Answer: $5 million, give or take. Was it possible Palin’s attorneys were working on a contingency basis, or maybe doing this just for the publicity? Answer: Basically, no.

Hulk Hogan didn’t pay his own legal costs (meaning, in part, Harder’s invoices) when he took Gawker to court. Silicon Valley grotesquerie Peter Thiel famously footed Hogan’s bill—secretly at first, until he was outed as Hogan’s backer. When it comes to this trial, I just can’t bring myself to believe that Palin paid for it out of pocket. If indeed she didn’t, and someone else was funding this, I wondered where that money was coming from. I asked Harder if he knew. He said he didn’t.
