In reply to the discussion: AOC gets vaccinated [View all]PTWB
(4,131 posts)Are you under the impression that the post you were replying to has anything to do with the number of constituents in AOC's district? It doesn't.
AOC's district consists of, as you said, around 700,000 people. She has 10.9 million twitter followers (a very large reach indeed). She did a great service by broadcasting her message of vaccine safety to those followers.
I can't help but notice you posted an OP sharing a tweet from Speaker Pelosi in which she publicized her own experience taking the vaccine. Thank you for doing that! I'm proud of Speaker Pelosi for doing so and leading by example. Her district also has 700,000 people--it's just slightly smaller than AOC's district, but she broadcast the message to her 6.1 million followers because she, like AOC, has a very loud megaphone to broadcast her message.
Incidentally, about 78% of the contributions to Speaker Pelosi's campaign came from outside the 12th District of California and 66% from outside of the state of California.
This isn't an attack on Pelosi, I think she's the most effective speaker we've had in many years. I'm merely using your own line of reasoning to show that wildly popular politicians, like Speaker Pelosi and AOC, tend to garner significant support from outside their districts.
Promoting vaccine safety in the face of all the misinformation is critically important. This isn't a progressive vs moderate issue or an up-and-comer vs seasoned leader issue. This is a public health issue. There is plenty of room to heap praise upon all of our Democratic superstars.
