(18,486 posts)As president, he's guarded by the Presidential Protective Detail (PPD). As a former president, he gets a former president detail, a much lower degree of protection with many fewer and different agents. FPOTUS detail includes agents who are either senior agents who were formerly on PPD and close to retirement or younger agents hoping to work their way up from the field office to PPD. It's just a few of them, nothing even remotely like what he's used to - even presidential candidates get a much higher degree of protection than former presidents.
At noon on 1/20/21, his PPD detail signs off and turns him over to the scaled down former president detail. Buh-bye limo, motorcade, metal detectors, post standers, etc. He gets a few agents and a couple of SUVs.
