There was a core group of assassins hidden among the mob of rioters on Wednesday - and their intention was to kill Pence and Pelosi. They used the mob, the violence, & the craziness as a cover to distract police so they could carry out the dirty deed.
Most of the mob didn't know they were being used this way, they were just a brainless mob. Insurrection and disruption was their intention, not murder. At least some of them were there for the selfies and cosplay.
Another group had a separate plan to grab the electoral college votes and carry them off and burn them. However that plan was thwarted by a few Congressional aides who grabbed the containers of documents and brought them to a safe place. Many of the insurrectionists had no plan at all because they're idiots.
A lot of people will be arrested and charged, but very few of them knew anything about the assassination plot. Here's hoping the FBI can sort out the hardcore assassins from the selfie cosplay idiots.
