fight over whether or not they should have gay boys or gay men openly involved. Seems quaint, at this point, but it was not so long ago, and it got vicious.
The essayist painted a skillful word-picture that looked very like that map: in essence, the greater the population density, the more tolerant people were of differences of all kinds. In a city of any size, its a rare person who can manage to associate only with their own kind in work, school, neighborhoods, and public transportation.
The lower the population density, the more likely it is that people had never (or seldom) encountered anyone not of the same ethnic stock think Lake Woebegone, where it was noteworthy whether your family was Lutheran or Catholic, and whether their forebears were Danish or Norwegian. Difference is anomalous and it feels wrong. People who are too different
. move away to big cities.
That was it. Once I grasped that, all political maps clicked into place.
