The US is obsessed with sports. Walk into any bar in the country and 9 out of 10 people sitting there will be able to go into great detail on who the backup quarterback is for the local football team, but only 1 in 5 can name their Congressperson. 24 hour sports networks, bigger and bigger TV events. Somewhere in the 80s people stopped caring about civics as much as they did sports. It's a big part of why we are in the mess we're in.

The only good thing about it now is it's the only venue that left and right can interact peacefully nowadays. Tailgating for the big game brings all walks of Americans together.
