This isn't a Parliament. Only one of two people could be President, or Senator, or your Representative on the Federal Level, a vote will always be for one or the other.
A "protest vote" always goes to the opposition candidate. So those who wrote in Bernie, Harambe, or voted Green in November 2016 voted for Trump.
And those who couldn't convince themselves to vote for Clinton also voted for Trump, just by leaving the Presidential section of their ballot blank.
Because they assumed their vote wouldn't matter.
In several critical states, Clinton lost by around 10k, less than the number of protest or non-Presidential voters in those states. Too many "Good Democrats" and "Progressives" just took it for granted she would win and indulged in the privilege of expressing their feelings over considering their civic duty.

And that's a really common - and bad - American habit.
