To answer your questions, this report says Chinese strain now has a R factor of 20. That’s huge, similar to measles in number of infections for each person. Much more contagious than earlier.

But it’s also much less deadly that earlier strains. Estimates are that so far, about 18% of the Chinese population has caught it in the last two weeks.
