17. And the point of a long (or any) prison sentence is to do what?

What's the end goal here? Eye for an eye? That's 2000 BCE barbarism. Send a message to other mothers to be more mindful of their children? I think that's pretty much a given. Show society that we're tough on crime? Is there a spate of child endangerment happening here? Maybe a PSA on TV would be more productive than sending her to prison as a statement to be more mindful of your children. Lock her up because she's a threat to society? Really? I would probably never hire her as a babysitter, but other than that, is she a threat to anyone?
