“Watch out Guinea worm! Here comes Jimmy Carter!” President Carter said this sign made by children in Nigeria was his favorite of all time. For 32 years Jimmy led a Carter Center initiative to elimate Guinea worm infections in Africa. #FreshWords

Guinea worm is a water borne parasite that grows in the body for a year and painfully emerges over several weeks as up to a 36 inch worm. Children are especially vulnerable.

When he started 3.5 million Africans were infected each year. Checking in for Jimmy's 99th birthday the 2023 case count so far is 6. What a remarkable achievement by a remarkable human being!
