(3,489 posts)It's not just the chat transcript that points towards Robinson being motivated to kill Kirk because of his left-of-center political alignment and his objection to Kirk's views. The preponderance of the available evidence, right down to the anti-fascist etchings on the bullets in his rifle, points in that direction. This evidence includes statements Robinson made during a family dinner that align very closely with the transcript above.
I had someone assert that "Hey, fascist! Catch!", one of said etchings on said bullets, was solely a reference to a video game culture and had nothing whatsoever to do with Robinson's political beliefs or his view of Kirk. The words appear in a single video game, a game I myself have played while never encountering them. The claim was, to put it lightly, a hell of a stretch.
Again, I get it. I get the visceral "no" reaction to the idea that Robinson might have been motivated by left-of-center ideology. I get that it's distressing to consider. We're the good guys and we want to believe that our side is virtuous, on the side of the angels. And for the most part, I would say that's true. But it is a fact that people can sometimes do awful things when motivated by an ideology that is otherwise virtuous. People are complicated that way.
But it serves no useful purpose to close our eyes to the truth and spin ever more frantic theories in an attempt to deny the reality.
