If someone (or a group) is singled out by authorities or an authority figure, there is assumed guilt, even if it doesn’t exist. “If the police arrest someone, they must be guilty. Why would they be arrested otherwise?”

Everyone thinks they would be the one to speak up and stand for their own morals, even if inviting punishment on themselves. Most would be wrong. It’s easier to just say nothing.
