In reply to the discussion: Science teacher being investigated for using the word 'vagina' during lesson on reproductive system [View all]adieu
(1,009 posts)I remember in 7th grade, our science teacher talked about penis and vagina and how baby was made, oral and anal sex and no one (AFAIK) batted an eyelash.
She talked about condom use and other contraceptives and how the fertilized egg embedded in the uterus.
She pronounced vagina as "pagina" and after that class, I was in the library searching for that word in the "P" section of the dictionary. Let me tell you, my vocabulary grew by a significant amount that day, especially in the "P" words.
The thing is, at that time, in 7th grade, I didn't know the official term for the vagina. I think I knew penis for the male sexual organ, but we of course used "pee-pee" or "ding-dong". I don't think we used "cock" or even "dick".
Also, in 5th grade, a friend was over at my home and I said, "Fuck!" and he asked whether I knew what it meant. I gave the evasive, "Of course, it's, you know..." I don't think I had understood the mechanics of sexual intercourse at that time. Our 7th grade teacher clearly explained it to us, though.
And now I read that this teacher taught this in 10th grade. Unless those students have been hiding from the internet, I'm sure all of them have seen some of the most outrageous and amazing free porn already since 5th grade. I grew up pre-internet, so we were stuck looking at magazines if we ever had the chance.
