And there are physicists who follow and understand his work. If his theories did not work it would be exposed. There have been notable examples when he was wrong. Such is the world of science.
There are many examples where his theories hold up. For instance, one of his big ones, Hawking Radiation which predicts that black holes must eventually evaporate via quantum virtual particle pair generation near a black hole's Schwarzchild radius.
The guy is pretty amazing given that he's been nearly totally paralyzed with motor neuron disease for decades and cannot even talk.
