...it was statutory rape and prison and loss of job entirely appropriate.

In the hypothetical case of a college professor and 18 or over student, it depends on the situation. If student was in professor's class, then perhaps a reprimand from school is in order, as no legal action can be taken, but its still inappropriate. If student wasn't in prof's class, nothing can be done and its pretty much their business.
